Widespread screening with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) has led to a significant increase in the detection of early stage, clinically localized prostate cancer (CaP). Various treatment options for localized CaP are discussed in this review article including active surveillance, radical prostatectomy, radiation therapy, and cryotherapy. The paucity of high-level evidence adds a considerable amount of controversy when choosing the "optimal" intervention, for both the treating physician and the patient. The long time course of CaP intervention outcomes, combined with continuing modifications in treatments, further complicate the matter. Lacking randomized trials that compare treatment options, this review article attempts to summarize the …

Abstract

A prostate cancer committee was established to modify the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology (NCCN Guidelines) on Prostate Cancer for adaptation and implementation in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The objective was to enhance the multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of prostate cancer. The committee, comprising regional experts in the fields of urologic, medical, and radiation oncology, reviewed the 2009 version of the NCCN Guidelines on Prostate Cancer and suggested modifications based on the unique needs of the regions determined through published evidence and local expertise. Many options exist for the treatment of localized prostate cancer. In the decision to choose a therapeutic option for localized disease, many variables need to be considered such as tumor characteristics, clinical stage, the patient's overall health and life expectancy, and preferences of both the physician and patient. To investigate the influence of the mucosa on the inhibitory effects of the ATP-sensitive potassium channel (KATP channel) opener, cromakalim, on the spontaneous contractions of pig bladder strips from the bladder dome and trigone. Little is known about the influence of the mucosa on spontaneous contractions and whether the nature of these contractions differs between the bladder dome and trigone.

MATERIALS AND METHODS
Paired longitudinal strips of female pig bladders were isolated from the dome and trigone. The mucosa was removed from one strip per pair and tissues were set up in organ baths. Spontaneous activity was allowed to develop …

Introduction: We report a 43 year old man who was diagnosed with a level-I thrombus and was managed on oral sunitinib for two months by a community Urologist. The thrombus progressed to a level-III and he subsequently developed a pulmonary embolus, which required oral anticoagulation. He was then referred to our facility for definitive surgical care. A computed tomography scan demonstrated a 12 by 15 centimeter right renal mass and on magnetic resonance venography of the abdomen a tumor-thrombus extending into the infradiaphragmatic inferior vena cava was noted. Pre-operatively consults with hepatobiliary, vascular, and chest surgeons were obtained.

For the early detection of prostate cancer, the analysis of the Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in serum is currently the most popular approach. However, previous studies show that 15% of men have prostate cancer even their PSA concentrations are low. MALDI Mass Spectrometry (MS) proves to be a better technology to discover molecular tools for early cancer detection. The molecular tools or peptides are termed as biomarkers. Aims: Relaxation of detrusor muscle via b-adrenoceptors may contribute to urine storage during bladder filling. Thus there is increasing interest in b-adrenoceptor agonists as a potential treatment for detrusor overactivity. The role of the urothelium in bladder responses to b-adrenoceptor agonists is not yet clear, although we have shown that these agonists have a greater inhibitory effect on detrusor contraction when the urothelium is intact. The aim was to determine which b-adrenoceptor subtype is involved in this effect.
