Effects Of Tensioning Errors In Split Transfers Of Tibialis Anterior And Posterior Tendons, Stephen J. Piazza, Matthew F. Moran, Neil A. Sharkey, Robert L. Adamson, James O. Sanders

All PTHMS Faculty Publications

Background: Split transfers of the tibialis anterior and posterior tendons are commonly performed to address hindfoot varus deformities in patients with cerebral palsy, stroke, or brain injury. Poor outcomes from these procedures are often attributed to a failure to tension the transferred tendon properly, but the mechanical effects of this aspect of the procedure have not been quantified, to our knowledge. The purpose of the present study was to use a cadaver model to examine changes in the actions of these muscles that occur when the tensions in the halves of the split tendon are intentionally balanced or unbalanced to …

Quality Assessment Of A Collaborative Approach For Decreasing Drug-Related Morbidity And Achieving Therapeutic Goals, Brian J. Issetts, Lawrence M. Brown, Stephen W. Schondelmeyer, Lois A. Lenarz

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Background Collaboration between physicians and pharmacists is one approach to address drug-related morbidity and achieve therapeutic goals. A collaborative practice of pharmaceutical care has been used in the Fairview Clinics System of Minneapolis-St Paul since 1999.

Methods The quality of therapeutic determinations made by pharmacists within this collaborative practice of pharmaceutical care was studied by a 12-member panel of physicians and pharmacists who used randomly selected patient records. This was a quality improvement and care process validation component of a study evaluating the effects of drug therapy management in patients receiving prepaid medical assistance. An implicit review process was used …

Examination Of Iv Antibiotic Use And Length Of Stay In Community-Acquired Pneumonia Patients, Shane Hammock Jan 2001

Examination Of Iv Antibiotic Use And Length Of Stay In Community-Acquired Pneumonia Patients, Shane Hammock

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between IV antibiotic administration and the length of stay for patients with community-acquired pneumonia. Research demonstrates that pneumonia is a large economic burden to acute care facilities across the United States. An ex post facto design was used to examine the difference in lengths of stay (LOS) for two groups of patients diagnosed with community-acquired pneumonia in the Appalachian region. The first group received IV antibiotic therapy at or within 8 hours of arrival to the hospital. The second group received IV antibiotic therapy after 8 hours of arrival to …

Untrained Volunteers Are Marginally Effective In Delivering Public Access Defibrillation, Richard N. Bradley, Lynda J. Schoenstein, Mohhamad Alshanti Oct 2000

Untrained Volunteers Are Marginally Effective In Delivering Public Access Defibrillation, Richard N. Bradley, Lynda J. Schoenstein, Mohhamad Alshanti

Richard N Bradley

Study objectives: This study analyzed the behavior of untrained volunteers when presented with a simulated cardiac arrest and an automated external defibrillator (AED). The primary hypothesis of this study was that volunteers could, with no advance training, operate an AED to deliver a defibrillation to a mannequin in 3 minutes or less at least 75% of the time. The secondary hypothesis was that this population would perform all of the tasks considered essential in AED use (establish unresponsiveness, check for breathing, give 2 rescue breaths, check for pulse, apply electrodes correctly, clear patient, activate emergency medical services (EMS) response, and …

Functional Significance Of The Upregulation Of Adhesion Molecules On Irradiated Endothelial Cells, Balabhaskar Prabhakarpandian Jun 2000

Functional Significance Of The Upregulation Of Adhesion Molecules On Irradiated Endothelial Cells, Balabhaskar Prabhakarpandian

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Ionizing radiation is a major therapy for cancer. Damage to the endothelium and upregulation of inflammatory responses are major side effects of radiotherapy, but the mechanisms behind these processes are not clear. A key component of the inflammatory response is leukocytes adhesion to the endothelium in a multi-step process involving leukocyte tethering to the endothelium, followed by rolling, firm adhesion/spreading and extravasation. Adhesion molecules mediate this process, particularly, E-selectin and ICAM-1, which are inducible adhesion molecules. E-selectin is involved in the initial tethering and rolling steps of the adhesion cascade while ICAM-1 appears to be involved in the latter steps. …

Late Effects Of Ionizing Radiation On Normal Microvascular Networks, Vinh Nguyen Jun 1999

Late Effects Of Ionizing Radiation On Normal Microvascular Networks, Vinh Nguyen

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Therapeutic doses of ionizing radiation result in changes in the structure and function of microvascular networks in normal tissue. Previously, we reported on the early effects of ionizing radiation on microvascular networks at 3, 7, and 30 days post-irradiation [1-3]. Data from the early time points suggested that ionizing radiation significantly alters the structure and function of microvascular networks and interferes with the normal processes of vessel maturation. Here, we
present our findings on the late effects of ionizing radiation on normal tissue microvasculature at 60, 120, and 180 days post-irradiation. The cremaster muscle of Golden Syrian hamster was locally …

Mutagenecity Of Formocresol, Glutaraldehyde, Ferric Sulfate And Aluminum Chloride : Materials Used In Therapeutic Pulpotomies, Adolfo Barrera Jun 1996

Mutagenecity Of Formocresol, Glutaraldehyde, Ferric Sulfate And Aluminum Chloride : Materials Used In Therapeutic Pulpotomies, Adolfo Barrera

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Ferric sulfate (Astringedent) and aluminum chloride (Hemodent) have been proposed as possible medicaments for use in primary teeth for therapeutic pulpotomies.

There is little information in the literature about the biologic properties of these medicaments.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mutagenic response of the ferric sulfate and aluminum chloride and compare them with glutaraldehyde (1.5%, 1% and 0.5% concentration) and formocresol (2%, 0.75%, 0.01% and 0.005% concentration). TA98 and TA1535 strain were used in the Ames test to assess mutagenecity. Neither ferric sulfate nor aluminum chloride exhibited mutagenic potential, in comparison with glutaraldehyde and formocresol, which …

Job Accommodation In The Automobile Industry : Addressing The Problem Of Lateral Epicondylitis, Thanigaivel Ashwin Raj Jan 1996

Job Accommodation In The Automobile Industry : Addressing The Problem Of Lateral Epicondylitis, Thanigaivel Ashwin Raj

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Cumulative trauma disorders are musculoskeletal problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff tendinitis, and epicondylitis which can affect assembly line workers. The injuries are thought to result from repetitive motions performed under excessive loads in anomalous postures. The project aimed to design, build, install, and evaluate worksite accommodation at the Saturn plant for a worker with right lateral epicondylitis. The goal was to make her fully functional in her original team which required addressing the injurious aspects of the task that caused or aggravated her injury.

A process of observation, interview, and analysis identified “the door mount” operation on …

Patterns Of Hydroxyproline Excretion In Ovariectomized And Estrogen Treated Rats, Gregg Horras Jan 1991

Patterns Of Hydroxyproline Excretion In Ovariectomized And Estrogen Treated Rats, Gregg Horras

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

If nuclear binding sites for estrogens exist in bone cells, then the origin of estrogen-deficiency-induced osteopenia may be at the level of bone matrix protein synthesis. Since collagen is the most abundant protein in the bone matrix, and since hydroxyproline is an imino acid nearly exclusive to collagen, a monitoring of the metabolism of hydroxyproline in ovariectomized and estrogen treated rats may provide insight into the patterns of estrogen-deficiency-induced osteopenia. The purpose of our study was to test the hypothesis that ovariectomy will increase urinary hydroxyproline excretion in the rat and that this increase will be reversed by estrogen treatment …

Root Surface Area Related To Anchorage In The Begg Technique, Donald Copeland Freeman Jun 1965

Root Surface Area Related To Anchorage In The Begg Technique, Donald Copeland Freeman

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Almost two hundred years ago Hunter recognized the necessity of extracting teeth to ’’procure room for the others which are to be brought into the arch.” He further noted that, ”To extract an irregular tooth would answer but little purpose if no alteration could be made in the situation of the rest.”1

Extraction of selected teeth to gain room for the proper placement of the rest, and the subsequent procedures to utilize this space to the utmost advantage, have been integral parts of orthodontic treatment for many years.

Strang and Thompson2 stated that the ability to manipulate any …
