The Perceptions, Barriers, And Facilitators To Seeking Mental Health Help In College Student-Athletes (Pbas-Mh And Pfas-Mh): A Mixed-Methods Pilot Study, Margaret Hunt

West Chester University Master’s Theses

Through the COVID-19 pandemic, 1 in 10 NCAA student-athletes reported feeling so depressed it has been difficult to function (NCAA, 2020). Despite this, student-athletes are significantly less likely to seek mental-health help than their non-athlete peers. The present study sought to develop and validate the Perceptions of Barriers to Seeking Mental Health Help in Student-Athletes (PBaS-MH) and the Perceptions of Facilitators to Seeking Mental Health Help in Student-Athletes (PFaS-MH) surveys in college student-athletes, as well as determine predominant barriers and facilitators they experience with seeking mental health help. A convergence mixed-methods research design was conducted to triangulate results. The surveys …

Objectives: To determine if sweat rate and sweat electrolyte concentrations differ when football players exercise in warm versus cool environmental conditions. Participants: Eleven unacclimatized football players exercised for 60 min in warm (24°C and 75%RH) and cool (10°C and 25%RH) randomly assigned trials. Methods: Sweat patches made from sterile gauze were placed on forearm, low back and thigh sites after skin was thoroughly washed and dried. Sweat rate was calculated as change in pre-exercise to post-exercise nude body weight adjusted for fluid consumed and urine produced during exercise. Sweat patches were removed after exercise and centrifuged to separate sweat from …

Analysis Of Pelvic Alignment Patterns Utilizing The Postural Restoration Institution Approach, Marisa Mills Jan 2022

Analysis Of Pelvic Alignment Patterns Utilizing The Postural Restoration Institution Approach, Marisa Mills

West Chester University Master’s Theses

Background: Low back pain is a common problem that can include injury to the sacroiliac joint (SIJ) with 15-30% of cases arising from LBP. Treatment for SIJ includes muscle energy. A newer approach from Postural Restoration Institution (PRI) centered around pelvic patterns alignment has also been used. There’s limited research found describing the prevalence of pelvic patterns within populations with PRI method.

Purpose: To examine prevalence of pelvic patterns and investigate a relationship of low back pain. Furthermore, to explore the specific patterns closely and the ability to re-align pelvic patterns by utilizing PRI repositioning exercises.

Study Design: Cross …

The Effect Of Cryotherapy And Inflammation And Myofiber Regeneration Following Skeletal Muscle Injury, Noah Macniven Apr 2021

The Effect Of Cryotherapy And Inflammation And Myofiber Regeneration Following Skeletal Muscle Injury, Noah Macniven

Sports Medicine Student Work

Cryotherapy is a widely used modality to treat acute skeletal muscle injury. Traditionally, cryotherapy is used immediately following an injury to accelerate the healing process by decreasing pain, inflammation and secondary hypoxic injury. Recent studies conflict with this long-standing practice and have suggested that cryotherapy may actually impair the myofiber regeneration process after muscle injury due to suppression of the inflammatory process. Therefore, delaying the healing process. A critical appraisal was conducted on three studies that have examined the inflammatory markers and markers of muscle regeneration. These studies were conducted over the past five years and have examined the effects …

He Effects Of Vestibular Rehabilitation On Reaction Time: A Critically Appraised Topic, Christian Miles Apr 2021

He Effects Of Vestibular Rehabilitation On Reaction Time: A Critically Appraised Topic, Christian Miles

Sports Medicine Student Work

In the U.S, mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) account for 5-10% of all athletic injuries at the high school and collegiate levels. Following mTBI, reaction time is often delayed, which can increase risk for additional injury. Research shows that vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) for mTBI/concussion can reduce symptoms and reduce recovery time; however, research is limited on the effects of VRT on reaction time. Therefore, the purpose of this research project was to critically appraise current evidence on the effects of VRT on reaction time in patients with an mTBI or concussion. To achieve this objective, I conducted a literature …

Acute Effects Of Complex Training Using Three Different Intracomplex Rest Intervals On Power Output In Recreationally Trained College Students, Brianna M. Donnelly

West Chester University Master’s Theses

Power is often referred to as explosiveness and is viewed as essential for many athletes within a wide range of sports. Power in sports is important in relation to its foundation in other specific abilities like first step-quickness, acceleration, and reaching top speeds (Cronin, Hansen, 2005). This research study examines the acute effects of complex training using three different intracomplex rest intervals (ICRI) on power output in recreationally trained college students. The goal of this study was to find the optimal ICRI for complex training (CT) by completing a countermovement jump on a force plate after a 3-RM back squat …

Assessing The Lack Of Transgender Participation In Sports, Joseph Stavely, Lindsey Keenan

Ramifications

Transgender athletes face many challenges when attempting to participate in sport competitions. Facing these challenges causes many transgender athletes to abandon their sport. Whether it be a lack of adequate locker rooms, or fearing to show themselves in public, transgender athletes face many roadblocks on their path to sport achievement. Many of these roadblocks cause a transgender athlete to lose interest in the sport they love and create the potential to affect participation in sports and physical activity all together. It is clear sports and physical activity participation is lower in transgender athletes than participation by cisgender athletes due to …
