Comparing The Effects Of Mat Pilates On Lower Limb Strength And Agility In Young Adults With Sedentary To Active Lifestyles, Morgan E. Mccammon

Honors Program Projects

Background: Meeting physical activity guidelines is essential for maintaining physical health, decreasing the risk of chronic disease, and improving fitness. Pilates is a form of low to moderate exercise that can be implemented to improve multiple components of fitness and be considered active. Today, Pilates is available to the general population through online instruction.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of a four-week, self-led online Pilates program or a walking routine on inactive and active young adults. This study analyzed changes in lower limb strength and agility.

Methods: This experiment involved eighteen …

Effects Of A 12-Week, Guided Exercise Program In Adults With Intellectual Disabilities, April Kamba Apr 2024

Effects Of A 12-Week, Guided Exercise Program In Adults With Intellectual Disabilities, April Kamba

Scholar Week 2016 - present

Evidence suggests lower than average levels of physical activity among individuals with ID (Barnes et al., 2013). Fitness programs developed for adults with ID need to not only focus on increased physical activity levels, but also on how to create exercise programs that meet the recommended standards set to improve fitness levels as they relate to longevity and health. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a 12-week, guided fitness program on adults with ID. Participants included 17 adults with ID (34.6 ± 10.4 years). Dependent variables, physical activity levels (IPAQ), body composition (BMI, BIA, WHR), …

Sport Specialization And Injury Risk In Naia Athletes, Connor H. Cavanaugh Mar 2024

Sport Specialization And Injury Risk In Naia Athletes, Connor H. Cavanaugh

ELAIA

Background Sport specialization is defined as intense year-round training in a single sport while excluding other sports. Though some studies have supported a relationship between increased levels of sport specialization and injury risk, others have contradicted this. Previous literature has also suggested that sport specialization levels increase dramatically throughout high school, though this hypothesized increase and possible relationship between sport specialization and injury risk has not been investigated in posthigh school athletes at the NAIA level. Methods This study aimed to investigate the possible relationship between sport specialization and injury risk, as well as how sport specialization levels change throughout …

Previous literature has also suggested that sport specialization levels increase dramatically throughout high school, though this has not been investigated in post-high school athletes. This study aimed to investigate the possible relationship between sport specialization and injury risk, as well as how sport specialization levels change throughout college by distributing a questionnaire online to 251 undergraduate NAIA athletes. Participants were assessed according …

Acl Injury Prevention Participation Among Collegiate Female Athletes, Natalie R. Bardwell May 2022

Acl Injury Prevention Participation Among Collegiate Female Athletes, Natalie R. Bardwell

ELAIA

Background

A common injury for athletes is a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament, with a disproportionally higher rate of injury among female athletes than male athletes due to many anatomical and physiological differences. One of the proposed causes of increased injury is the difference in hormone levels during the phases of the menstrual cycle. Even though ACL injury prevention programs have been used to help reduce the number of injuries among athletes, it is not yet well known if changing hormone levels throughout the menstrual cycle is predictive of ACL injury risk among athletes that engage in injury prevention …

Abstract

Background: A common injury for athletes is a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament. There is a higher rate of injuries among female athletes rather than male athletes due to many anatomical and physiological problems. One of the proposed causes of these injuries is the difference in hormone levels in during the phases of the menstrual cycle. ACL injury prevention programs have been used to help reduce the number of injuries among athletes, yet many athletic teams to not actively participate in these programs. Many studies have used the Lower Extremity Scoring System …

Noncontact Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries In Collegiate Female Soccer Players: The Effects Of A Four-Week Prevention Program On Landing Kinematics, Tess K. Marcordes Dec 2018

Noncontact Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries In Collegiate Female Soccer Players: The Effects Of A Four-Week Prevention Program On Landing Kinematics, Tess K. Marcordes

ELAIA

Background Noncontact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are highly prevalent in soccer as quick changes in direction, stop-start motions, as well as jumping and landing often paired with shooting or passing a ball, are occurring continuously throughout a practice or match. Exaggeration of these movements with extreme joint motions increases the likelihood of ACL injury. An ACL injury can be detrimental to an athlete’s career, as 25% of athletes with such injuries do not return to their pre-injury level of play (Padua, DiStefano, Beutler, de la Motte, DiStefano, and Marshall, 2015). Myer, Ford, McLean, and Hewitt (2006), Garcia (2011), and …

Concussion Education And The Self-Reporting Rate Of Concussion Symptoms Among College Athletes, Brian J. Hyma May 2015

Concussion Education And The Self-Reporting Rate Of Concussion Symptoms Among College Athletes, Brian J. Hyma

Ed.D. Dissertations

This study addressed the effectiveness of a structured concussion education tool in order to increase the knowledge of concussion symptoms among college athletes. Also, efforts were made to determine if the gained knowledge from the education tool would lead to an increase in the self-reporting of acquired concussion symptoms. For the study, pre and postseason surveys were administered to athletes among six universities. Athletes representing the experimental group received pre-season concussion education while the control group did not receive the education. Data concerning the athlete’s history of structured concussion education, retained knowledge of concussion symptoms, along with the rate of …

Deviance In The Sport Of Soccer: The Relationship Between Wearing Brightly Colored Cleats And Aggression, Katherine G. Kulchar May 2011

Deviance In The Sport Of Soccer: The Relationship Between Wearing Brightly Colored Cleats And Aggression, Katherine G. Kulchar

Honors Program Projects

Two studies examined the effects of deviance in the sport of soccer, specifically how players who wear brightly colored cleats are perceived by others, whether or not they act more aggressively, and whether or not other players act more aggressively toward them. In the first study, research was conducted using collegiate soccer players recruited from the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The participants filled out an online survey asking a wide range of questions about aggression and sports. Analysis of the data suggests that a relationship exists between players who wear brightly colored cleats and aggression levels. Not only do a …

College Athletes' Perceptions Of Effective Coaching Behaviors And How Perceptions Influence Individual Performance And Team Satisfaction, David Brent Holstein May 2010

College Athletes' Perceptions Of Effective Coaching Behaviors And How Perceptions Influence Individual Performance And Team Satisfaction, David Brent Holstein

Ed.D. Dissertations

This study collected data both quantitatively and qualitatively on athletes’ perceptions of their current coaches and whether these perceptions influenced individual performance and team satisfaction as perceived by the athlete. Athletes at two community colleges participated (n=145) in the quantitative portion, the Athletes’ Perceptions of Effective Coaching Traits Questionnaire (APECT-Q), along with five being interviewed. Overall, on the APECT-Q it was found that athletes at the two schools felt their coach’s behaviors/traits did moderately to strongly influence their performance and team satisfaction. Conclusions and implications from both a theoretical and empirical perspective were discussed in an effort to continue to …
