Effecting Change By The Use Of Consultative Coaching With The Primary Caregivers Of Language Delayed Preschoolers, Sari Jeanne Giles

This study examined the effect of a speech-language pathologist using consultative coaching with the primary caregivers (PCG) of two expressive language delayed preschool children. The coaching was designed to improve the PCG’s use of specific communication behaviors and strategies to facilitate growth in the child’s communicative behaviors. Specifically, the consultative coaching encouraged the PCG to (1) follow the child’s lead (2) use self and parallel talk (3) expand on the child’s verbal productions and (4) use open-ended questions. Two dyads, made up of expressive language delayed preschool children and their primary caregivers, were the subjects in single subject multiple-baseline designs. …

The fields of vocal pedagogy and speech pathology are often thought to be completely separate entities. This misconception has existed for decades and continues to inhibit the vocal growth of the voice student. The student is not permitted to explore the benefits that could come from a combined application of the two fields of study. This is due to the fact that a large number of voice teachers refuse to acknowledge that the scientific study of speech pathology even remotely applies to the study of the ''singing" voice. Current research involving developmental apraxia of speech has focused on two areas: 1) determining a unique set of speech and language characteristics of the disorder; and 2) determining an etiology or cause of developmental apraxia. Failure of researchers to determine these issues has lead to increased controversy over the existence of developmental apraxia. Further, no studies have been conducted which discuss the prevalence of developmental apraxia. The important role that the general practitioner plays in the early identification and treatment of childhood language disorders is discussed. A short overview is presented of research that was conducted, with the aim to determine a group of general practitioners’ awareness of childhood language disorders. Information is provided regarding the critical language acquisition stage, characteristics of Language disordered children, appropriate age for referrals to the speech-language therapist, the role that the speech-language therapist and the general practitioner play in the treatment of children with language disorders.
