Examining Body Mass Index And Sepsis Mortality At One Year After Sepsis, Jamie D. Robinson
Examining Body Mass Index And Sepsis Mortality At One Year After Sepsis, Jamie D. Robinson
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Sepsis is a serious and life-threatening syndrome affecting 1.7 million Americans annually and resulting in approximately 270,000 deaths. An “obesity paradox” where obese individuals have lower sepsis mortality than their non-obese counterparts has been described. The problem is that the longevity of the effect is unknown, and few studies have examined the obesity paradox after 1-2 months post-diagnosis.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study examined clinical, demographic, and biomarker variables thought to affect sepsis mortality at three-time points: 30 days, 180 days, and at one year post-sepsis diagnosis in order to shed light on specific factors that might define …
A Behavioral Weight Loss Program For Low-Income Adults With Obesity And Hiv, Sophai Thach
A Behavioral Weight Loss Program For Low-Income Adults With Obesity And Hiv, Sophai Thach
Dissertations
Problem: Obesity, having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 or greater, increases the risk for cardiovascular disease. For people living with HIV (PLWH), this increases their risk for myocardial infarctions by 50% and causes this life-threatening event to occur at a younger age compared to those who are not diagnosed with HIV.
Methods: With obesity disproportionately affecting people with low income, this study aims to evaluate the effects of a 12-week behavioral weight loss program that utilizes journaling as a self-monitoring tool, weekly educational classes, and individualized goal-setting on PLWH with obesity who live in …

Adolescent Obesity In The Past Decade: A Systematic Review Of Genetics And Determinants Of Food Choice, Eleanor T. Campbell, Alexis T. Franks, Paule V. Joseph
Publications and Research
Background and purpose: As the incidence of global obesity increases, concerns about adverse health outcomes in adolescents continues to rise. The complexity and expense of this problem require early recognition and specific preventive treatments. Knowledge of genetics and determinants of food choices contributing to adolescent obesity warrants further examination. The primary goal was to appraise the literature from the past decade (2007–2017) on the current state of food choice and genetic determinants of adolescent overweight/obesity in the United States. The secondary goal was to determine trends in the literature and areas for future research.
Methods: A systematic review of research …
Childhood Obesity: Getting Back To The Basics, Fanny Powell
Childhood Obesity: Getting Back To The Basics, Fanny Powell
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Childhood obesity is an epidemic that affects the nation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2015) states that over the past thirty years, the prevalence of childhood obesity has more than doubled in younger children and quadrupled in adolescents (CDC, 2015). Although obesity is a multifactorial health issue that is affected by genetics, metabolic factors, socioeconomic factors, and lifestyle choices (Stanford, 2018), a majority of pediatric obesity is as a result of consuming more energy than the body utilizes. There are both immediate and long-term consequences of obesity that negatively affect a child’s health which may carry over …

Prevalence And Prevention Of Diabetes In School Age Children: A Parent Education Module, Christine Mary Whitmyer
Doctoral Projects
The Center for Disease Control reports that there continues to be an increasing number of children being diagnosed with childhood-onset Type Two Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). The recommendation is to provide education to parents regarding the risks and possible risk factors of T2DM, and strategies to prevent and treat these risk factors (Center for Disease Control [CDC], 2014). Educating parents of school age children on T2DM risk factors, and prevention practices may help to slow down this rising number of new cases. The Aim is to provide educational modules that may increase knowledge, which could in-turn change behavior, that may prevent …

Effect Of Activity Trackers And Text Messaging On Exercise, Fitness, And Physical Activity Self-Efficacy Of Middle School Students, Alison F. Pittman
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
A decrease in physical activity as children age is a contributing factor to the U.S. obesity epidemic. Middle school children are particularly vulnerable to sedentary activities. Activity trackers show promise as a means to motivate children and adults to increase physical activity (PA). This study examined the effect of a text messaging intervention and use of activity trackers with a companion social website on the body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage, physical fitness, and PA self-efficacy of middle school children. Children aged 11-14 (n=102) were randomly assigned to one of three groups for a 10-week intervention: activity tracker group; …

Wecan Implementation For Parents Of At-Risk Hispanic Adolescents In Middle School, Shannon Leigh Devita
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Abstract
CDC-reported childhood obesity rates have tripled in the past three years. Among children in grades five, seven and nine, 30% are overweight or obese, with Hispanic students more likely to be overweight than White students. This evidence-based project examined the effectiveness of NHLBI’s WeCan! for at-risk middle-school-age Hispanic children and parents. The program was implemented at school in two weekly sessions, and its effectiveness was evaluated using the WeCan! survey. The program resulted in improved knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes related energy balance, portion size, healthy foods, physical activity, and screen time and may be useful in other school settings.

Many have ORCHC that increase their morbidity and mortality and increase health care costs. In 2013, 42.6 percent of AAs living in South Carolina (SC) were obese. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to identify the cognitive, behavioral, biological, and demographic factors that influence health outcomes (BMI, and ORCHC) of AAW living in rural SC. A sample of …
Solving The Obesity Problem One Bite At A Time: A Review Of Interventions, Sally Catherine Davis
Solving The Obesity Problem One Bite At A Time: A Review Of Interventions, Sally Catherine Davis
Honors Theses
Resource limitations contribute to obesity in southern rural populations. An examination of published research provides evidence related to factors that lead to obesity and to related health consequences. Resource limitations in southern rural areas include a lack of access to healthy foods, a lack of safe areas to exercise or fitness equipment, and a lack of funding to promote the hiring of adequate numbers of healthcare workers to implement prevention programs and treat obesity related diseases. An investigation of obesity rates in Mississippi and Louisiana demonstrate that high rates of obesity exist. Through an exploration of published interventions in both …
