PURPOSE: Cancer patients who remain tobacco users have poorer outcomes, including increased mortality and decreased treatment tolerance; however, cessation post-diagnosis is challenging. Our formative research explored cessation-related perspectives among patients and staff at one National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, to inform improving cessation services within oncology care.
METHODS: Using a descriptive phenomenological approach, a purposive sample of current cancer patients (n = 13) and cancer center physicians and cessation program staff (n = 9) were recruited to complete one-on-one audio-recorded in-depth qualitative interviews, to explore experiences providing or receiving cessation support, and perspectives on patients' readiness and needs regarding cessation. …
Policy Forum: The Tobacco Surcharge & Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Taxes: Reconciling Equity And Targeted Public Health Interventions, Ben Barber
Virginia Journal of Public Health
Virginia is poised to repeal the tobacco surcharge, an ineffective policy that disproportionately harms low- and middle-income Virginians. (Small, 2023) The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), which otherwise strengthened health care access and equity, allows health insurers in the individual and small-group markets to charge smokers up to 50 percent higher premiums relative to nonsmokers. (ACA, 2010) The law’s financial assistance does not apply to this surcharge, forcing enrollees to bear the entire cost of the penalty. This provision was a compromise between the ACA’s drafters, most of whom opposed the surcharge, and the health insurance industry, which …

Clinical Epigenomic Explanation Of The Epidemiology Of Cannabinoid Genotoxicity Manifesting As Transgenerational Teratogenesis, Cancerogenesis And Aging Acceleration, Albert Stuart Reece, Gary Kenneth Hulse
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
As global interest in the therapeutic potential of cannabis and its’ derivatives for the management of selected diseases increases, it is increasingly imperative that the toxic profile of cannabinoids be thoroughly understood in order to correctly assess the balance between the therapeutic risks and benefits. Modern studies across a number of jurisdictions, including Canada, Australia, the US and Europe have confirmed that some of the most worrying and severe historical reports of both congenital anomalies and cancer induction following cannabis exposure actually underestimate the multisystem thousand megabase-scale transgenerational genetic damage. These findings from teratogenic and carcinogenic literature are supported by …

Racial Differences In Tobacco Use And Risk Factors Among Young Adults: Roles Of Expectancies And Emotion Regulation, Laurel Brockenberry
Racial Differences In Tobacco Use And Risk Factors Among Young Adults: Roles Of Expectancies And Emotion Regulation, Laurel Brockenberry
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
African Americans experience higher mortality from lung cancer and other smoking-related diseases than Caucasian Americans (Kochanek et al., 2016) despite engaging in cigarette and e-cigarette use significantly less or at comparable rates to other racial groups (CDC, 2015; Schoeborn, 2013). During adolescence, smoking prevalence is lower among African Americans than Caucasian Americans, but there is a “cross-over effect” whereby smoking rates become similar later in adulthood (Belgrave et al, 2010). The mechanisms driving this effect are poorly understood. Thus, examining motivating factors for tobacco use, such as outcome expectancies and emotion regulation, may be especially illuminating for young adult African …

Understanding Young Adult Tobacco And Marijuana Use, Shazia Rangwala
Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)
In 2015, young adults in the United States (U.S.) reported co-use of tobacco and marijuana at a much higher rate than exclusive use of marijuana. While there is some qualitative research specific to using tobacco and marijuana separately, there is a lack of qualitative research studying poly/dual or co-use of these products and to understand the complex interactions between the varied modes of delivery for tobacco and marijuana. Qualitative research in this area is important especially due to the major developmental shifts that occur as youth transition into young adulthood. The proposed study is a descriptive analysis of qualitative data …

This, quantitative cross-sectional study used the social ecological model as the …
An Analysis Of The Differences In Health Outcomes And Socioeconomic Factors Between Veteran Smokers And Non-Smokers In Tobacco-Growing States, Jacob Hauser
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Tobacco usage still remains the single most preventable cause of disease, disability, and death in the United States. Service members and veterans, especially those residing in tobacco-growing states, face higher levels of societal pressure to take up the habit compared to their civilian counterparts. This research investigates why this is the case, the differences in health outcomes, and the differences in socioeconomic factors between the veteran smoking and non-smoking populations before making policy recommendations to policymakers and stakeholders to address this problem.

Smoking is the most well-established cause of chronic airflow obstruction (CAO) but particulate air pollution and poverty have also been implicated. We regressed sex-specific prevalence of CAO from 41 Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease study sites against smoking prevalence from the same study, the gross national income per capita and the local annual mean level of ambient particulate matter (PM2.5) using negative binomial regression. The prevalence of CAO was not independently associated with PM2.5 but was strongly associated with smoking and was also associated with poverty. Strengthening tobacco control and improved understanding of the link between CAO and poverty should …
