MedGlobal has a longitudinal presence in ongoing humanitarian disasters that can provide rich clinical experiences for academic institutions looking to provide more diverse and equity-driven training for its residents and fellows. Background: We have long known that various social determinants of health (SDH) such as race, gender, socioeconomic status and others can affect health outcomes, such as readmission rates and mortality. To our knowledge, the impact of SDH on safety events has not been studied.

Objective: Although extensive research exists on corrosive environments in the Tri-State Mining District (TSMD), there has been a lack of research on how such harmful effects in the TSMD could affect residents living in those areas. Project Aim: Increase the percent of eligible patients receiving kangaroo care from 19% to 30% by September 2019.

Results:

113 staff completed education

OT consults completed on all SBU patients

20 kangaroo wraps purchased

Kangaroo care rate in NICU increased from 19% (prior to SBU) to 36% (Post SBU opening).

Conclusion: Due to increased multidisciplinary awareness of importance of kangaroo care in the SBU more parents are completing kangaroo care.

Specific Aims:

1. To maintain the ED team's high rate of accuracy in data collection
2. To begin team participation in corrective action planning
3. To improve interdepartmental problem solving

Conclusion

Open communication about errors among all collaborating departments, combing with a shared approach to solving them:

• improved morale and perception of error tracking by the team
• led to a decrease in errors overall, and
• increased interdepartmental collaboration

When all members of the interdepartmental team work together with a positive approach to corrective action, improvement in error rates is a natural outcome of the solutions derived.

Food insecurity, when a household is unable to acquire food for one or more of its members due to insufficient resources, has recently been on the decline in the United States, according to official 2017 USDA reports.

Unfortunately, this decline has not been observed to the same extent in the demographic of households with children.

WIC is a federal assistance program that works to alleviate the poor health outcomes associated with food insecurity in this demographic by providing eligible, enrolled families with nutritional aid and education.

Despite the availability of a bronchiolitis CPG; variation in care practices still existed at our institution. The aim of our quality improvement (QI) project was to increase overall adherence with our institutional CPG in patients 60 days to 24 months of age diagnosed with bronchiolitis in the urgent care centers (UCC), emergency departments (ED), and general inpatient units from a baseline of 40.9% to 60% by the end of two bronchiolitis seasons.

Acute bilirubin encephalopathy (ABE) and kernicterus spectrum disorder (KSD) have become relatively uncommon in high income countries but remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries. In the world of nursing, caregiver injury is still a major problem. It has been reported that 44% of healthcare workers have lower back musculoskeletal pain. The purpose of this study was to examine ways to decrease injury to care providers. The methodology was a literature review focusing on turn assist technology. Aerobic capacity (VO2 MAX) predicts both athletic performance and health status. Many tools are available to assess VO2 MAX ranging in both cost and accuracy. The purpose of this research is to identify if the negative physical and physiological symptoms of menopause are decreased in menopausal women who exercise compared to menopausal women who do not exercise. There are many negative symptoms of menopause including an increase in waist circumference, hot flashes, and weight gain. Exercise is a non-pharmacological way to decrease some of these symptoms that women experience when going through menopause. Multiple studies show that exercise decreases the risk of osteoporosis, body fat, waist circumference, triglyceride levels, and depressive symptoms in menopausal women. The "Sterile Cockpit Rule," developed in 1981 as an aviation regulation, was adapted by the ECMO core team to promote a distraction-free environment during critical ECMO procedures.
