Assessing Social Determinants Of Health In Primary Care, Vicki Carpenter
Assessing Social Determinants Of Health In Primary Care, Vicki Carpenter
Doctoral Projects
The social determinants of health encompass the various circumstances and environments in which individuals reside, develop, labor, and experience aging (Social Determinants of Health, 2022). These variables significantly contribute to the existence of health inequities and disparities within populations. In order to effectively mitigate health disparities, it is imperative to consider the various determinants that influence health outcomes, as this consideration is crucial for advancing the goal of achieving health equity. This public health concern encompasses multiple sectors within our society, necessitating the collaboration of various organizations and communities to effectively address and mitigate its impact.

Studying The Impact Of Hyperlipidemia Monitoring Tools On Referral Rates In Patients Taking Antipsychotics, Jasmyn S. Allen
Studying The Impact Of Hyperlipidemia Monitoring Tools On Referral Rates In Patients Taking Antipsychotics, Jasmyn S. Allen
Doctoral Projects
The purpose of this DNP project is to determine how well an evaluation tool may be used to track hyperlipidemia in patients using antipsychotic medicines who are between the ages of 20 and 50. Elevated lipid contents in the bloodstream, or hyperlipidemia, increase the danger of heart-related illnesses. Antipsychotic drugs, frequently administered for mental health disorders and dyslipidemia, have been connected. The goal is to ascertain whether utilizing an evaluation tool raises the three-month referral rates for hyperlipidemia to primary care (Dayabandara et al., 2017). The foundation of the research is found in several articles collected from different websites. According …
Assessment Of Appropriate Antibiotic Usage After Intervention To Increase Antibiotic Stewardship In A Rural Health Care Setting, Mayci Mccloud Speights
Assessment Of Appropriate Antibiotic Usage After Intervention To Increase Antibiotic Stewardship In A Rural Health Care Setting, Mayci Mccloud Speights
Doctoral Projects
Antibiotics are a powerful and useful tool prescribed by healthcare providers to treat bacterial infections in patients. However, when antibiotics are unnecessarily prescribed or improperly consumed or not consumed by patients, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) can ensue. Antibiotic resistance (ABR) is an urgent public health threat and is, unfortunately, the root cause of many deaths in the United States every year. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), in the United States, more than 2.8 million antimicrobial-resistant infections occur each year, and more than 35,000 people die as a result (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2022a). Even further, when infections …
Quality Improvement Project To Assist In Implementation Of Prediabetes Screen Protocol, Kyai Forney
Quality Improvement Project To Assist In Implementation Of Prediabetes Screen Protocol, Kyai Forney
Doctoral Projects
Prediabetes is a reversible condition that causes blood glucose levels to be higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. When one has prediabetes, the cells in the body do not respond normally to insulin, and insulin acts like a key to letting blood sugar into cells to use energy. The pancreas produces insulin to try to get the cells to respond, but eventually, the pancreas has a challenging time keeping up, and the blood sugar level rises causing prediabetes (Lehrman, 2021). A person can have prediabetes for years with no obvious symptoms, so …
Blind Spot: Implicit Bias In Health Care And Its Awareness Among Nursing Students At The University Of Southern Mississippi, Debora Skaliks
Blind Spot: Implicit Bias In Health Care And Its Awareness Among Nursing Students At The University Of Southern Mississippi, Debora Skaliks
Doctoral Projects
While prejudice and bias are eminent topics in our society, implicit bias or unconscious bias is not as easily detected. Even though implicit bias may be a familiar concept to many, numerous healthcare workers frequently do not recognize the extent of harm such biases can impose on patients' health and outcomes. The Blind Spot DNP project exposed in this research paper explores the relentless question of the correlation between implicit bias awareness, implicit bias education, and its impact on health care. This Doctor of Nursing Project (DNP) project aimed to analyze whether implicit bias education and testing could increase unconscious …
Improving Compliance With Treatments For End-Stage Renal Disease Patients On Hemodialysis, Susan Blakeney
Improving Compliance With Treatments For End-Stage Renal Disease Patients On Hemodialysis, Susan Blakeney
Doctoral Projects
According to Blumrosen et al. (2020), the dialysis population cost expenditure is greater than “seven percent of the Medicare budget at nearly $40 billion a year” even though this population is “less than one percent of the Medicare population” (p. 1436). Additionally, the renal disease population is growing in the United States and internationally which contributes to rising healthcare costs around the globe (Levin, 2018).
The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to identify the factors or reasons hemodialysis patients miss treatments or only stay for partial treatment. Hemodialysis patients are required to have treatments three …
Assessment Of Intrapartum Nurses' Beliefs Related To Birth Practices, Janice Scaggs
Assessment Of Intrapartum Nurses' Beliefs Related To Birth Practices, Janice Scaggs
Doctoral Projects
Intrapartum nurses’ beliefs influence nursing behavior and nursing interventions during labor and birth. Assessing these beliefs in a regional hospital in the Southeastern United States was the focus of the doctoral project. Before the project, there was no objective data that assessed individual nurse’s beliefs and birth practices in the labor and delivery unit, or among the nursing staff as a whole. A knowledge gap existed in understanding if the nursing culture valued, promoted, and supported intended vaginal birth. Nursing leadership recognized that the overall cesarean birth rate and primary cesarean birth rate in the hospital were similar to State …
A Collaborative Approach To Incentivizing Healthy Food Choices Among Uncontrolled Diabetic Patients At A Local Federally Qualified Health Center To Improve Health Outcomes, Briauna J. Taylor
A Collaborative Approach To Incentivizing Healthy Food Choices Among Uncontrolled Diabetic Patients At A Local Federally Qualified Health Center To Improve Health Outcomes, Briauna J. Taylor
Doctoral Projects
Background: The rate of uncontrolled diabetes among patients at a local Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) is higher than the nation standard, a phenomenon believed to be caused by the effects of social determinants of health (SDOH). SDOH, specifically food insecurity, play a significant role in health outcomes of diabetic patients. Increasing access to healthy foods, thereby reducing food insecurity, has the potential to improve glycemic control and reduce diet related chronic disease.
Objectives: The project aims to determine if partnership with a membership based incentivized grocery store has the potential to positively impact health outcomes among vulnerable patients with …
A Policy Analysis Of Adult Lead Exposure Screening In Michigan, Omoyemi A. Idowu
A Policy Analysis Of Adult Lead Exposure Screening In Michigan, Omoyemi A. Idowu
Doctoral Projects
A growing body of scientific literature suggests that even at low levels, lead is an important, but often overlooked risk factor for cardiovascular disease mortality in adults. Through an initial literature review and organizational assessment, the DNP student was able to identify a potential gap between current research and policy guidelines related to adult lead exposure screening in the state of Michigan. The purpose of this policy analysis project was to examine current literature and policy guidelines related to lead exposure screening in the adult population in order to identify and analyze a potential gap that may be amenable to …
Implementing Screening To Assess Readiness To Change In Overweight And Obese Patients At A Patient-Centered Medical Home, Jarrod Gant
Doctoral Projects
Obesity is at epidemic levels within the United States (U.S.), but the Southern U.S. has some of the most obese states. Mississippi (MS) is the most obese state in the country (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2018). Factors such as diet, sedentary lifestyle, cultural influences, and socioeconomic status contribute to the state’s citizens being overweight and obese.
Contributing to the state’s obesity is the fact that MS has more people living in poverty than any other state (Center for American Progress [CAP], 2018). Lacking the ability to afford healthy foods and the ability to afford quality healthcare adds to the state’s …

Implementation Of Evidence-Based Chronic Non-Malignant Pain Management Protocol For Primary Care, Jenny E. Kipp
Implementation Of Evidence-Based Chronic Non-Malignant Pain Management Protocol For Primary Care, Jenny E. Kipp
Doctoral Projects
Chronic pain is the most prevalent health condition in the United States and is the most common reason people seek healthcare (Chang, Daubresse, Kruszewski & Alexander, 2014). In 2012, health care providers wrote 259 million prescriptions for opioid pain medications despite little change in self-reported pain prevalence (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 2016; Chang et al., 2014). Initiatives to prevent the under treatment of pain have resulted in overreliance on opioids to treat pain. As a consequence of opioid centric prescribing, an opioid epidemic has evolved with devastating consequences such as dependence, addiction and overdose deaths related to …

Evaluation Of Processes And Procedures For Care Of The Opioid Recipient Patient In The Primary Care Setting, Anne Sproat
Doctoral Projects
Introduction: Chronic non-cancer pain is far reaching, affecting over 100 million Americans (Zgierska et al., 2018). Opioids are commonly prescribed for chronic pain, with approximately 20% of patients presenting to primary care offices with symptoms of pain or pain-related diagnoses (Dowell, Haegerich, & Chou, 2016). As a result, opioid prescribing rates are increasing at a faster rate for primary care practice compared with other specialties (Dowell et al., 2016). Within the United States population, it is estimated that three percent to four percent of the adult population are prescribed long-term opioids for the treatment of chronic non-cancer pain (Dowell et …

The Development Of A Wayfinding Smart Phone Application As A Large Healthcare Facility Investment Opportunity, Jessie Fortson Marshall
Doctoral Projects
Health care is a continually growing field. New hospitals are constantly being built, while older facilities are experiencing renovation and expansion. With this growth comes a set of difficulties for patients as they try to navigate through large, multi-building facilities. Most large facilities have multiple parking garages, numerous buildings, and medical towers with an unending number of floors. Patients are forced to rely on directional signage to find their destination that is often insufficient. Attempting to navigate through large facilities is often overwhelming for visitors leading to frustration and stress.
New technology has allowed a convenient solution to this problem …
