Sedentary Behavior And Related Factors Among Full-Time, University Faculty, Mary Keenan, Anna Greer
Anna E. Greer
Purpose - Sedentary behavior, independent of physical activity, is a risk factor for both morbidity and mortality. Little is known about factors related to sedentary behavior. The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between sedentary behavior and the demographic characteristics, perceived physical activity (PA) environment, and PA behaviors of 72 full-Time, university faculty members. Design/methodology/approach - For this cross-sectional study, data were collected online using Survey Monkey®. Findings - Participants spent an average of 473 and 328 minutes/weekend day in sedentary activity. There was a positive correlation between minutes spent in vigorous PA and minutes spent sedentary …

Anna E. Greer, associate professor of exercise science in Sacred Heart University’s College of Health Professions, along with several of her students, recently celebrated a long-awaited victory. On October 5, the Bridgeport City Council voted to ban smoking on beaches, playgrounds and sports fields in all Bridgeport parks, following a campaign led by Greer's 2014 Health Promotion Planning and Evaluation class.
Older Black Women’S Experiences Initiating And Maintaining Physical Activity: Implications For Theory And Practice, Anna Greer, Beau Greer, Ash Tucker
Older Black Women’S Experiences Initiating And Maintaining Physical Activity: Implications For Theory And Practice, Anna Greer, Beau Greer, Ash Tucker
Anna E. Greer
Using a semi-structured discussion guide, 15 interviews were conducted with physically active, older, Black women living in the Eastern U.S. to examine what contributed to participants’ physical activity initiation and maintenance. Thematic analysis organized content. Constant comparison methods compared themes between participants. Participants initiated physical activity when a cue to action, such as weight gain or a medical issue, triggered a perceived need to exercise. When participants initiated physical activity, they experienced immediate unexpected benefits, such as improved energy. Participants reported continuing activity because of these initial benefits. After continued physical activity over time, participants experienced the health benefits they …

Objective and methods: This study examined trail use among 857 trail users on 21 trails in Michigan from 2008 to 2011 using a valid and reliable intercept survey. Results: Most of the 857 participants traveled to the trail from their home (92.6%), lived within 15 min of the trails (74.8%), and used active transport to travel to the trails 69.7%. The odds of active transport to the trails were greater among those who had not graduated high school (OR=3.49; 95% CI=1.02, 11.99) and high school graduates (OR=7.432; 95% CI=2.02, 27.30) compared to college graduates. Whites and adults also had greater …
Community Members’ Assessment Of The Physical Activity Environments In Their Neighborhood Parks: Utility Of The Community Stakeholder Park Audit Tool, Anna Greer, Richard Marcello, Rochelle Graveline
Community Members’ Assessment Of The Physical Activity Environments In Their Neighborhood Parks: Utility Of The Community Stakeholder Park Audit Tool, Anna Greer, Richard Marcello, Rochelle Graveline
Anna E. Greer
Objective. This study engaged community members to describe physical activity (PA) environments in parks and to examine if the PA environment in parks was related to the economic characteristics of households near parks. Method. Twenty-four Bridgeport, adult residents examined the PA environments in 21 Bridgeport, Connecticut, parks using the Community Stakeholder Park Audit Tool (CPAT) during the summer, 2013. ESRI’s Geographical Information System was used to identify the economic characteristics (i.e., median household income, percentage of households below the poverty line; from 2010 Census data) of households within 0.5 miles of a park. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to …
Physical Activity And Cognitive-Health Content In Top-Circulating Magazines, 2006–2008, Anna Greer, Sara Corwin, Daniela Friedman
Physical Activity And Cognitive-Health Content In Top-Circulating Magazines, 2006–2008, Anna Greer, Sara Corwin, Daniela Friedman
Anna E. Greer
Physical activity may promote cognitive health in older adults. Popular media play an important role in preventive health communication. This study examined articles discussing associations between physical activity and cognitive health in top-circulating magazines targeting older adults. 42,753 pages of magazines published from 2006 to 2008 were reviewed; 26 articles met inclusion criteria. Explanations regarding the link between physical activity and cognitive health were provided in 57.7% of articles. These explanations were generally consistent with empirical evidence; however, few articles included empirical evidence. Physical activity recommendations were presented in 80.8% of articles; a wide range was recommended (90–300 min of …
School Administrators' Perceptions Of Factors That Influence Children's Active Travel To School, Anna Greer, Delores Pluto, Olga Ogoussan, Jorge Banda

BACKGROUND: Increasing children's active travel to school may be 1 strategy for addressing the growing prevalence of obesity among school age children. Using the School Travel Survey, we examined South Carolina school district leaders' perceptions of factors that influence elementary and middle school students walking to school. METHODS: Frequency distributions and chi-square tests were used to analyze the survey responses; open-ended questions were reviewed qualitatively for recurring topics and themes. RESULTS: School and district leaders (N = 314) most often reported street crossing safety (54.0%) and number of sidewalks (54.0%) as priority factors that should be addressed to increase students' …
The Association Of Natural Elements And Trail Use By Adults, Anna E. Greer, Julian A. Reed, Steve P. Hooker
The Association Of Natural Elements And Trail Use By Adults, Anna E. Greer, Julian A. Reed, Steve P. Hooker
Anna E. Greer
We used the System for Observing Play and Recreation in Communities to examine the association between variations in natural elements (ie, season, weather, and temperature) and adults’ use of a rail-trail in South Carolina (2006-2009). Most (62%) of the 4,468 trail users observed were walkers; 38% were observed participating in vigorous physical activity. Adults were most often observed using the trail during the summer (32%), sunny weather (78%), and moderate temperatures (54%). When promoting trail use among adults, natural elements should be considered.
Use And Nonuse Of A Rail Trail Conversion For Physical Activity: Implications For Promoting Trail Use, Anna Greer, Julian Reed
Use And Nonuse Of A Rail Trail Conversion For Physical Activity: Implications For Promoting Trail Use, Anna Greer, Julian Reed
Anna E. Greer
There is limited research examining both use and nonuse of trails for physical activity. Purpose: Such research might enable health educators to better promote physical activity on trails. Methods: We used random digit dialing methods to survey 726 respondents in 2012. Results:The majority (75.1%) of respondents reported not using the trail in the previous 6 months. The odds of using the trail were greater among adults compared to older adults and those with a high school degree or college degree compared to those with less than a high school degree. Fifteen percent of trail users reported using the trail regularly …

The Effects Of Sedentary Behavior On Metabolic Syndrome Independent Of Physical Activity And Cardiorespiratory Fitness., Anna Greer, X Sui, Andrea Maslow, Beau Greer, Steven Blair
Anna E. Greer
BACKGROUND: To date, no longitudinal studies have examined the influence of sedentary behavior on metabolic syndrome development while accounting for cardiorespiratory fitness. PURPOSE AND METHODS: This prospective study examined the relationship between sedentary behavior and incident metabolic syndrome while considering the effects of physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness on the association among 930 men enrolled in the Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study. RESULTS: A total of 124 men developed metabolic syndrome during 8974 person-years of exposure. After adjusting for covariates, men with middle and high sedentary behavior had 65% and 76% higher risks of developing metabolic syndrome, respectively, than men with …
