B1: Determination Of Reliability And Practicality Of Saliva As A Genetic Source By Analyzing Dna Yield In Forensic Investigation : A Systematic Review”, G Sujatha, J Muruganandhan

Annual Research Symposium

Background

Genetic analysis has become the mainstay of forensic identification protocols. Oral fluids including saliva are invariably present in crime and disaster scenarios; their availability probably exceeding that of conventional sources like blood. Due to the intrinsic nature of fluids, the substrates may be degraded due to time delay and environmental exposure. Therefore, a review of the reliability and practicality of saliva in forensic analysis is warranted.

Objectives

This review is designed and planned to present and critically analyze the most relevant clinical trials on the application of saliva in forensic settings in order to assess the reliability of saliva …

Annual Research Symposium

Introduction: Dental graduates have a professional responsibility of being competent in managing the complications in exodontia, a very commonly performed procedure. Aim: The aim of this paper was to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of senior dental students toward the management of complications in exodontia. Materials and Methods: Four hundred dental students participated in the study voluntarily. Verbal consent was obtained after elaborating the purpose of the study. A short validated questionnaire consisting of 12 close-ended multiple choice questions was distributed to all the students. The questionnaires were collected back and results from fully filled questionnaires were tabulated in …

Annual Research Symposium

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many universities to expand the use of videoconferencing technology to continue academic coursework. This study examines dental students’ experience with videoconferencing technology, comfort levels, and perceptions of using videoconferencing technology.

Methods: 54 out of 100 second-year dental students enrolled in a course on local anesthesia, 54 completed a survey following an online synchronous lecture given in September 2020. Survey questions asked about prior experience with videoconferencing, comfort levels, and reasons for not turning on their video (showing their face).

Results: Overall, 48.2% had little or no prior experience with videoconferencing prior to March 2020. …

Point Of Care Technology For Underserved Populations, Anna Maloney Apr 2017

Point Of Care Technology For Underserved Populations, Anna Maloney

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

Point of Care technology is an emerging healthcare field. This technology allows for rapid, inexpensive, on-site testing for otherwise lengthy and costly laboratory tests. Leading infectious diseases can be tested immediately in non-invasive ways similar to using a pregnancy test. This inexpensive, highly portable, and extremely accurate technology should be used for populations that have historically lacked access. Such access would result in immediate cost savings and life savings.

Underserved populations in America such as migrant workers or people living in poverty rarely receive the testing they require. Although clinics for illegal immigrants exist where they are protected and cannot …

Secondary Data Analysis Based On Children Health Survey: On Factors Associated To Overall Dental Health Of Children In Usa, Kavita Gohil

GS4 Georgia Southern Student Scholars Symposium

The mouth is the portal of entry into the body, thus it is essential to attain and maintain oral health care. This process begins from the early period of life. Humans have two sets of teeth, and they start developing even before birth and development lasts till the age of around 25 years. Thus it is essential to take care of teeth during early stages of life, as they can affect overall well-being of the human. This paper describes how children's oral health is affected by external and internal factors and also risk factors which are associated with their oral …

Who Is Making Lifestyle Changes Due To Preventive Health Care Information? A 10 Year Comparison Study, Joseph D. Cangelosi Jr., David Kim, Edward Ranelli Sep 2015

Who Is Making Lifestyle Changes Due To Preventive Health Care Information? A 10 Year Comparison Study, Joseph D. Cangelosi Jr., David Kim, Edward Ranelli

Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings

This paper sought to describe from a set of 6 demographic and 13 lifestyle change variables the person who is significantly and positively impacted by preventive health care information (PHCI). Based on past research, six hypotheses were developed. Three of the six hypotheses were accepted. In addition, there were significant relationships for each of the six demographic variables with at least one of the lifestyle change variables. Those who are seeking and are positively impacted by PHCI are better educated, female, and (depending upon the lifestyle change variable in question) fall into a definite age category. There is partial support …

Migrant Health Education At Broetje Orchards, Megan Baker May 2015

Migrant Health Education At Broetje Orchards, Megan Baker

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)

Although it is recognized that there is a gap in health education in migrant and other under-served populations, very few programs have been established to address this problem. This research is important because it highlights areas in which health education is lacking and provides suggestions on how to address these issues. The purpose of the research was to assess the health education program present in the migrant community living in the Vista Hermosa community at the Broetje Orchards in Prescott, Washington, and to compare it to other migrant and agricultural communities. The Vista Hermosa Community is a unique case study …

The Road To A Happier Health Care System: Lessons From Denmark, Deanna Karam Apr 2015

The Road To A Happier Health Care System: Lessons From Denmark, Deanna Karam

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

The lack of an organized primary care system in the United States not only contributes to high health care costs, but also to decreased access to care, increased fragmentation, and poor health outcomes. The Scandinavian country of Denmark, with its universal health care system and “cozy and snug” lifestyle offers a model for reforming the US health care system. In Denmark, primary care is organized around a gatekeeping system, in which General Practitioners serve as gatekeepers to other medical services, including hospitals and specialists. This system is responsible for Denmark’s well-organized and coordinated primary care system, which largely contributes to …

Defining Obesity: An Argument For The Social Environment Perspective, Meghan Mcinnis Apr 2014

Defining Obesity: An Argument For The Social Environment Perspective, Meghan Mcinnis

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

It is well documented that obesity is a growing problem in the U.S. and worldwide. By 2010, 35.9% of U.S. adults age 20 and older were obese (Overweight and Obesity, CDC). Obesity has been associated with many health problems, including hypertension, type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, stroke, and cardiac disease (Lucey, 2008, p.202). What has just been described is the traditional, medicalized narrative of obesity. In this narrative, obesity is viewed as an epidemic that demands an immediate and widespread response (Lucey, 2008, p.202). The blame is placed largely on individuals, while social factors, such as socioeconomic status and neighborhood environment, …
