Established in 1995, the Western Australian Data Linkage Branch (DLB) is Australia’s longest running data linkage agency. The Western Australian Data Linkage System (WADLS) employs an enduring linkage model spanning over 60 data collections supported by internally developed and supported software and IT infrastructure. DLB has delivered, and continues to deliver, a range of significant data linkage innovations, many of which have been adopted elsewhere. The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is a useful multi-use assessment tool which may be used to evaluate health care providers of various disciplines in a clinical setting. It appraises proficiency, through direct observation based on objective or unbiased testing. Although use of diagnoses originally developed by NANDA (now known as NANDA-I), NIC, and NOC in education and practice is increasing, many faculty members have not been educated in their use and may be reluctant to teach these languages. This article provides guidance on the use of NANDA-I, NIC, and NOC in clinical education. This guidance will facilitate both faculty and student learning.

The purpose of this article is to describe the results of a clinical trial in which telephonic case management was evaluated as a supplement to substance abuse treatment. An interactive voice response system (IVR) was developed by the research team for use in the case management of randomly assigned participants in a clinical trial research project. The features of the software program facilitated a double caseload for the case manager as well as real-time data capture. At intake, no significant differences were found between participants in the telecommunication condition and the general project. Thus, the effectiveness of random assignment was …

BACKGROUND: Fetal conditions can in principle be affected by the mother's genotype working through the prenatal environment. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Genotypes for 1536 SNPs in 357 cleft candidate genes were available from a previous analysis in which we focused on fetal gene effects. After data-cleaning, genotypes for 1315 SNPs in 334 autosomal genes were available for the current analysis of maternal gene effects. Two complementary statistical methods, TRIMM and HAPLIN, were used to detect multi-marker effects in population-based samples from Norway (562 case-parent and 592 control-parent triads) and Denmark (235 case-parent triads). We analyzed isolated cleft lip with or without cleft …

In response to the current information explosion in nursing service administration (NSA), the authors felt a need to collect and organize available resources for use by their faculty and graduate students. An electronic database was developed to facilitate the use of the collected print and software resources. This article describes the creation of the NSA Resource Database from the time the need for it was realized to its completion. Since a substantial component of health care delivery is reflected in nursing's work, it is imperative that nursing expedites implementation of a standardized language that reflects nursing's work and ultimately allows outcome evaluation. This paper will summarize the state of development and related issues of standardized language in nursing, including: Nursing Minimum Data Set, Taxonomies of Nursing Diagnoses, Nursing Interventions, Outcomes, and the Nursing Management Minimum Data Set.
