Nursing | Student Research Posters
Gender roles and stereotypes continue to shape societal perceptions and expectations within the nursing profession. While strides have been made towards gender equality, male nurses remain underrepresented in certain nursing specialties. Understanding the influence of gender roles and stereotypes on male nurses' specialty selection is essential for promoting diversity and enhancing patient care outcomes. This study aims to explore how perceptions of gender roles and stereotypes impact the career decisions of male nurses and the subsequent implications for future patient care. By examining this complex interplay, we seek to uncover insights that can inform strategies for fostering inclusivity and improving …

Theses & Dissertations
Background: A medical error is one of the most preventable errors that occur frequently in hospitals, leading to millions of deaths yearly. Medical errors cost hospitals billions of dollars worldwide. Human error is also a common cause of medication errors, but this error is due to the failure of the system to detect errors. The electronic health record (EHR) is a complete set of computerized records of all information related to patient health that is used by one or more users in any care setting. This information includes demographic data of patients, patients’ progress notes, complaints and diagnoses, medications, vital …
Reducing The No Show Rates For Mental Health Appointments Among Young Adults, Johnnie Carrico
Reducing The No Show Rates For Mental Health Appointments Among Young Adults, Johnnie Carrico
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: Missed patient appointments have become an increasingly significant issue for healthcare organizations, private practices, and clinics. No show appointments can negatively impact the operational functions of these organizations including lost revenue. The clinical practice site’s pre-intervention no-show rate for young adult mental health appointments was 21%. The high percentage of missed mental health visits has resulted in both lost revenue for the clinic and disruptions in patient care.
PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was: In young adults 18-25 years with mental health appointments (P) how does patient preferred appointment reminders (I) compared to …

Improving Nursing Staff Knowledge For Management Of Geriatric Patients With Confusion In The Emergency Department, Kareem G. Carter
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: Staff knowledge of effective management of confusion in geriatric patients (>65yo) may be limited and inconsistent with the current goal of establishing a geriatric-friendly Emergency Department (ED) Model of Care. Suboptimal management of this patient population can result in prolonged ED stays, which increases the cost to the hospital and the patient (Han & Wilber, 2013).
Context: An Emergency Department at a large Bay Area urban hospital hopes to obtain Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA) through the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).
Interventions: Create a simplified checklist for nursing staff using mnemonic devices to …

Introduction: Perioperative anxiety is common in surgical patients and has been linked to poor patient outcomes. A weighted blanket may offer an alternative to or enhancement of anti-anxiety medications by activating a physiological response through the vagal system. This response successfully decreases anxiety and agitation in other patient populations but had not been studied in this population. This randomized study assessed the effectiveness of a weighted blanket for the reduction of presurgical anxiety and pain as well as post-surgical restlessness and nausea.

Consultation/Liaison Psychiatry During Covid-19, Robert Frierson, Steven B Lippmann
The University of Louisville Journal of Respiratory Infections
Consultation/liaison psychiatrists care for people with co-existing medical and psychologic difficulties. The coronavirus pandemic is stressful for patients and their psychiatric caregivers. Patients have lost support systems and harbor fears about exposing family to the virus. COVID-19 sometimes exacerbates previous psychiatric conditions, while diminishing intimacy with physicians. Everyone is oversaturated with COVID-19-related news focusing on rising concerns about the illness and about jobs, school, and housing insecurities.
The psychiatrist maintains a hospital presence despite fear of contracting the disease. Challenges include addressing staff morale, evidencing empathy despite telecommunication devices, and treating anxiety, depression, sleep phobias, post intubation flashbacks, COVID-19-induced cognitive …

The American College of Cardiology (ACC) and American Heart Association (AHA) revealed common errors made by healthcare professionals when measuring blood pressure (BP) in adult inpatients. These errors include using incorrectly sized cuffs, improper cuff placement, and inappropriate patient positioning. Inconsistent cuff sizes and position lead to underestimated and overestimated results, directly impacting patient care and outcomes. Additionally, the ACC/AHA identified patient position and talking during assessments as factors that directly impact the accuracy of the results. At Norton Healthcare facilities, a majority of BPs are obtained by patient care associates (PCAs). The purpose of this quality improvement project was …

Communication among the healthcare team is essential to providing high-quality patient care. In the hospital, nurses care for multiple patients during their shift. Physicians or advanced practice clinicians (APCs) visit hospitalized patients daily to update orders, complete assessments, and contribute to care plans. One method to ensure that healthcare providers communicate effectively is interdisciplinary, or dyad, rounding in the hospital. This consists of purposeful rounding on each patient by the nurse and the physician or APC together to review the patient's status and update the care plan. When healthcare providers and nurses round together, it improves communication, patients are more …

Abstract:
Purpose:
LGBTQIA+ patients experience devastating mental health and substance abuse disparities. While our organization has a broad non-discrimination statement that includes gender identity and sexual orientation, there is no guidance for how to best serve these patients. Evidence suggests training sessions are a successful means of increasing LGBTQIA+ cultural competency, with “Safe Zone” identified as being especially successful on college campuses. The Healthcare Equality Index also calls for education to demonstrate healthcare organizations’ commitment to LGBTQIA+ patients.
Intervention:
We developed an educational workshop - Safe Zone – with university psychologists. This workshop included interactive exercises that focused on increasing …
