Breaking Silence: Women And Men’S Experiences Of Preventing Ipv, Fatmeh Ahmad Alzoubi, Reem Ali

The Qualitative Report

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious problem in all cultures. This study aimed to identify Jordanian men’s and women’s strategies of preventing IPV using focus groups and open-ended questionnaires. Participants identified many strategies to prevent IPV, which fell within three themes: (1) shields of prevention; (2) understanding the triggers of IPV; and (3) resources of prevention. Participants described their opinions on preventing IPV and discussed the role of extended family, financial dependence, triggers of IPV, and coping strategies used by women. Preventing IPV requires substantial changes in the personal characteristics of men and women, communication skills, and law enforcement.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent consequence of physical and sexual intimate partner violence (IPV); however, little is known about the unique contributions of economic IPV. Furthermore, women’s economic self-sufficiency may explicate the potential relationship between economic IPV and PTSD symptoms. Guided by the Stress Process Theory and Intersectionality, this study examined associations between economic IPV and women’s PTSD symptoms and assessed economic self-sufficiency as a mediator. Problem The commencement of intimate partner violence (IPV) often begins with relationships during adolescence and young adulthood; hence, young age is a risk factor. Young adult females, pregnant and post-partum adolescents are at high risk of experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV).

Methods A prospective, descriptive design evaluating the impact of three IPV education sessions offered over a three-month period at a non-profit shelter specific for young adult, pregnant and post-partum adolescents.

Background: Women experiencing intimate partner violence are at a heightened risk of negative perinatal and breastfeeding outcomes. This study explored the experiences of accessing breastfeeding support for women who endorse a history of intimate partner violence. A study of five in-depth semi-structured interviews were completed at 12-weeks postpartum with breastfeeding mothers with a history of intimate partner violence. Findings: Women expressed difficulties in accessing a healthcare provider who had specialized skill in breastfeeding support. Trust in their healthcare provider, built through displays of compassion and competence, was important to mitigate obstacles experienced during care access for this population. The purpose of this Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) education quality improvement project was to evaluate the effectiveness of an undergraduate Community Health Nursing course, IPV simulation and learning activities. This experiential learning activity offered participants an opportunity to temporarily view life from the perspective of actual IPV victims/survivors, and review and discuss IPV statistics, at-risk populations, and warning signs.

The quality improvement project was developed using a mixed-methods quality improvement design. Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted in Karachi between 2008 to 2010, and comprised married women of reproductive age. Data was collected through a valid World Health Organisation questionnaire which was validated for the local context after translation into Urdu. Data was analysed using SPSS 10.

Problem Adolescents are at risk for experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV). As early as seventh grade, over half of adolescents have reported being in a romantic relationship. Adolescent screening for and education of IPV is minimal, and only the Healthy Relationships Quiz developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [HHS] screens young adolescents across all aspects of IPV, including psychological and sexual violence. The purpose of this project was to develop an IPV education plan for high school students in a health course.

Purpose: Women are disproportionately impacted from intimate partner violence (IPV). Their children also experience long-term adverse consequences. Effective IPV prevention and intervention efforts are vital. This quality improvement project addressed the lack of an evidence-based IPV training and protocol in a nurse home visit program.

Methods: Stakeholder engagement and an evidence-based practice intervention were implemented. Training effectiveness was examined by the pre-post-training assessments; completed by 17 nurses. To measure the IPV practice change, 196 pre- and 107 post-intervention charts were reviewed.

Results: The training significantly increased nurse knowledge and comfort (t=5.9, p< .001). Only 22% of those referred due to recent IPV history were screened before the intervention; 65% after the intervention. Multivariate analysis of screening rates was performed; predictors included county, mental health status, education, subprogram, and IPV referral reason. Due to low power, a one-tail test was employed. One county was 14 times less likely to screen than the other county (p= .023). 93% of those referred due to IPV history were enrolled in the crisis response subprogram, only offered by the other county. Those referred due to IPV history were three times more likely to be screened (p=.042) than those referred for other reasons. There was no significant change observed on IPV disclosure and intervention practice.

This quality improvement translational project was intended to increase the confidence of nurses screening for intimate partner violence, through education. The project utilized a focus group and the Physicians Readiness to Manage Intimate Partner Violence Survey to gather needs, knowledge gaps, and prior education to develop IPV education for a group of nurses at a public health department. Nurses were found to have a low level of IPV knowledge, with a mean score of 42.44 (SD= 15.13), on a 100-point scale.
