Dnp Final Report: Physical Activity In Bariatric Surgery Patients: An Evidence-Based Quality Improvement Project, Amber Buehler

DNP Final Reports

Background: Research evidence supports that increasing physical activity has been shown to reduce weight and prevent weight regain after bariatric surgery. There is currently no specific exercise recommendation or program at the Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery at Dallas.

Objective: To implement an evidence-based project surrounding physical activity to reduce weight regain in patients 12 months post bariatric surgery.

Methods: The 12-week program will consist of 3 times weekly 1 hour virtual exercise classes led by the Nurse Practitioner and/or Nurse. Patients will be screened for current physical activity via survey using the IPAQ at the beginning and …

Micronutrient Deficiency After Bariatric Surgery, Naitte P. Jordan Jan 2022

Micronutrient Deficiency After Bariatric Surgery, Naitte P. Jordan

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Abstract Bariatric surgery is the most clinically efficacious treatment for obesity and obesityrelated comorbidities. Many patients undergoing bariatric surgery have preexisting levels of nutritional deficiencies. The prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies may increase after surgery, and long-term nutritional monitoring and follow-up are essential factors for postoperative patient care; yet advanced practice nurses may not be accustomed to caring for patients or treating micronutrient deficiencies. The purpose of this systematic literature review was to collect and analyze clinical evidence to determine what can the APN with the best available evidence do for implementing protocols and procedures to prevent, detect, and monitor for …

The Impact Of Obesity Surgery On Psychosocial Health, Sibel Taze, Oya Gumuskaya, Mustafa Taşkın Dec 2018

The Impact Of Obesity Surgery On Psychosocial Health, Sibel Taze, Oya Gumuskaya, Mustafa Taşkın

Journal of Perioperative Nursing

Background: As obesity affects different dimensions of health, psychosocial wellbeing of patients can be predicted to significantly improve after bariatric surgery.

Method: This qualitative study focused on determining the experience of patients who underwent bariatric surgery and the psychosocial impact of it on their daily lives and provides nurses with detailed information regarding patients’ experience. While some of these outcomes were in line with the literature, they have also revealed new aspects and provided deeper understanding regarding individuals’ experiences.

Results: Five themes were identified: limitations in physical activity, social isolation due to negative body image, increased self-esteem, change in romantic …

Retention And Attrition In Bariatric Surgery Research: A Qualitative Study, William F. Gourash Jan 2017

Retention And Attrition In Bariatric Surgery Research: A Qualitative Study, William F. Gourash

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Problem: Longitudinal bariatric surgical research studies often lack information on retention and attrition of study participants and the strategies utilized to optimize these. The potential for attrition bias with adverse effects on validity, reliability, and generalizability increases over time. The many factors potentially affecting retention and attrition in research, have been under studied.

Purpose: The purpose was to explore factors affecting research participation of bariatric surgical patients who are subjects in the Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery (LABS) study. The research questions explored research participants’ perceptions, motivations, and attitudes concerning participation in the study, specifically participation in annual in-person visits …

Bariatric Surgery Weight-Loss Maintenance Among Hispanics: A Multiple Case Study, Minerva Aguilera Nov 2016

Bariatric Surgery Weight-Loss Maintenance Among Hispanics: A Multiple Case Study, Minerva Aguilera

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Obesity significantly contributes to human illness and to subsequent rising healthcare expenditures. Bariatric surgery has been identified as the only effective option to achieve the weight loss necessary for those who are morbidly obese. Previous research indicated that maintaining significant weight loss has been a problem for individuals who undergo bariatric surgery. The number of bariatric surgeries is increasing and factors that contribute to or interfere following bariatric-surgery weight-loss maintenance need to be determined. Research on weight-loss maintenance following bariatric surgery is very limited, particularly among the Hispanic population. This case-study research used an explanatory, multiple-case-study design to gain greater …

Body Image And Anthropometric Measurements In Bariatric Surgery Patients, Julie Ann Varns Apr 2016

Body Image And Anthropometric Measurements In Bariatric Surgery Patients, Julie Ann Varns

Dissertations

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore body image and anthropometric (body mass index) measurements in bariatric surgery patients over three months. Conceptual framework: The dimensions of body image are body attitude, Appearance Evaluation, body checking, body space, body size, and Appearance Orientation. Body attitude is affective distress related to one’s weight, shape, size, and fatness. Appearance Evaluation is feelings of satisfaction or dissatisfaction with one’s looks. Body checking is the repeated scrutiny of one’s body size, shape, and weight. Perceived body space is the amount of space individuals perceive their bodies to occupy. Perceived body size is …

The Relationship Between Weight Locus Of Control, Self-Rated Abilities For Health Practices, Selfcompassion And Weight Loss Outcome Among Adults Post-Bariatric Surgery, Gina M. Kearney Apr 2014

The Relationship Between Weight Locus Of Control, Self-Rated Abilities For Health Practices, Selfcompassion And Weight Loss Outcome Among Adults Post-Bariatric Surgery, Gina M. Kearney

Theses & Dissertations

Overweight and obesity have become growing threats to our nation’s health. Bariatric surgery, although its incidence has been reported to have reached a plateau, remains the most effective weight loss therapy available for the extremely (morbidly) obese. However, significant weight regain is often observed and evidence of weight loss maintenance has not been clearly or consistently demonstrated. Through the use of Self-Determination Theory as a theoretical underpinning and guiding model, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between psychological variables (weight locus of control, self-rated abilities for health practices, and self-compassion) and weight loss outcome (downward change …

The "Globesity" Trend: Exploring The Ethical Concerns Of Registered Nurses Caring For Bariatric Surgery Patients, Casey L. Lowden-Crook Jan 2014

The "Globesity" Trend: Exploring The Ethical Concerns Of Registered Nurses Caring For Bariatric Surgery Patients, Casey L. Lowden-Crook

Theses

Obesity is a major global health problem. The comorbidities associated with obesity (for example: diabetes mellitus type 2 and cardiovascular disease) are multisystem and require continual medical management which places a great strain on the healthcare system. Australia is ranked the 5th most obese population in the world and deaths associated with obesity and obesity related illnesses are estimated at 7,200 per year (Medibank, 2010). This lifestyle disease is now the leading cause of premature death in Australia. The obesity epidemic is blamed on changes in the social, economic and physical environment (obesogenic environments) which have influenced people to over-consume …
