Research has not extensively examined the contextual mechanisms by which Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and child abuse lead to chronic pain. Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and depressive symptoms overlap, yet, it is not clear whether they function in unique ways as mediators of the relationships of abuse with chronic pain. This workshop series is designed as a tool to help prevent the pervasive issue of Intimate Partner Violence. The individual workshops focus on the promotion of empowerment, positive communication, gender equality and on building relationship skills between men and women. They also provide opportunities for participants to examine their values and attitudes towards gender and relationships, to build on their knowledge on aspects of sexuality and to develop skills to help them communicate with others and ensure that they are communicating what they desire. Intimate partner violence (IPV) affects all women regardless of socioeconomic, race, or religion. More than one in three adult women in the U.S. have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner at least once in their lifetime. Aside from deaths and obvious physical injuries on a patient, IPV is associated with a number of adverse health outcomes. Retail health clinics (RHCs) are a new gateway to access healthcare and have the potential to see millions of patients per year.
