The Effect Of Nurse Initiated Paracetamol On Emergency Department Patients With Pain From Low Acuity Injury, Joanne G. Wilson

Early identification and management of pain was identified at the commencement of this study as a key area requiring research in emergency departments. Prolonged waiting times for analgesia especially, was highlighted in the National Institute of Clinical Studies emergency department collaborative in 2003. Many barriers exist for a patient to receive analgesia. In Western Australia this is compounded by the legislation which restricts prescribing rights for nurses. Three considerations guided the development of the research project. Firstly, the patient has initial contact with the emergency department from the nurse at triage. The United States faces a critical shortage of full time registered nurses as the Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA, 2004) estimates that one million vacancies will occur by the year 2020. This shortage of practicing registered nurses is directly affected by the shortage of nurse educators. The current vacancy rate of nurse educators is 8,8%, with an average of 2,2 vacancies reported per school of nursing. A recent survey by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing ([AACN], 2007) found that 71,3% of nursing schools reported vacancies and were in need of additional faculty. The CDC has conducted the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) every three to seven years between 1973 and 2002 to describe contraceptive use among women in the U.S. The data from these surveys are available to researchers to examine trends in contraceptive use and sexual behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine data from the 2002 NSFG in order to determine the influence of religiosity on abortion and abortifacient contraceptive use, i.e., the use of the oral contraceptive pill (OC), the injected hormone Depoprovera (IC), the IUD, and hormonal emergency contraception (EC), among American women between the …

The Influence Of Religiosity, Gender, And Language Preference Acculturation On Sexual Activity Among Latino/A Adolescents, Lisa Edwards, Richard Fehring, Keyona Jarrett, Kristin Haglund

The purpose of this study was to determine the main and interactive effects of religiosity, gender, and language preference acculturation on sexual activity among 570 Latino/a adolescents from the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth. Results indicated that adolescents who viewed religion as very important, had frequent church attendance, and had more traditional attitudes on sexuality were less likely ever to have sex compared with adolescents who were less religious. Those with frequent church attendance and high traditional attitudes had fewer lifetime and recent sex partners. Mental health professionals worldwide realize the imperative for reducing inpatient restraints and seclusion. The high incidence of posttraumatic stress disorder for inpatients and the resulting symptoms support the creation of a trauma-informed approach. The objective of the current article is to describe the experience of staff in a 20-bed unit transitioning from traditional inpatient care to a trauma-informed approach. The study comprised a qualitative design using content analysis (n = 10). The patterns clustered into the following categories: changing perspective, developing collaborative relationships, implementing safety measures, and prescribing educational resources. Background: Latinas experience more depression and are less likely to receive mental health support. Latinas of Mexican origin living in the United States (US) are the focus of this review since almost two-thirds of the US Latina/o population is of Mexican descent.

Objective: This paper synthesizes the research on depression in adult Latinas of Mexican origin residing in the US.

Relationship skills building is the focus of an innovative clinical experience with older adults for junior level nursing students in a psychiatric mental health course. The clinical experience is designed to help students apply, integrate, and validate previously learned therapeutic communication skills and experience discovery of self and others. This article describes a clinical experience that introduces students to older adults, who will make up the majority of health care recipients in the students’ future careers, and helps students explore the nurse’s role in mental health care for older adults.

The Hazards Of Starting The Cigarette Smoking Habit, Nisha Malhotra, Brahim Boudarbat

In order to develop effective policies and programs that reduce the number of smokers a necessary first step is to understand the determinants of starting to smoke. In this paper, we present a split-sample duration model of the decision to start smoking. We use data from the 2002 Canadian tobacco use monitoring survey. The hazard rate of starting smoking peaks sharply at age 15 and quickly declines thereafter. Our parametric estimates provide evidence that gender, education, marital status and household size are important determinants of the smoking habit. We also find that higher cigarettes prices have an impact on picking …
