Effects Of Biofeedback-Aided Relaxation On The Psychological Stress Symptoms Of College Students, Richard Fehring

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of Benson's relaxation technique (BRT) with Benson's technique augmented with GSR biofeedback (i.e., biofeedback-aided relaxation, BAR) on the psychological stress symptoms of well college students. Seventy-eight normotensive college students were randomly assigned to one of three groups: the BRT group, the BAR group, and a control group. The BRT and BAR students were asked to practice their respective relaxation technique daily for an eight-week period. Pre-and postintervention, all subjects were administered a state-anxiety inventory and a profile-of-mood state (POMS) test. Posttest analysis indicated that the BAR group had significantly lower …

The Effects Of A Sexual Teaching Program With Post-Myocardial Infarction Clients, Delores Williams

MSN Research Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a structured teaching program on knowledge and behavior regarding the resuming of sexual activity post-myocardial infarction. The effects of the teaching program were mea sured by the "Cardiac Sexual Knowledge and Behavior Inven tory" posttest. This test was administered to the control group prior to attending the planned teaching program. The experimental group attended individualized teaching sessions during the hospitalization period. Subjects in the experi mental group were posttested two to four weeks after their hospital discharge. The cardiac clients and their spouses received three two-hour teaching sessions on …

Physical Fitness Of Physical Therapy Students, Dennis Sobush, Richard Fehring Aug 1983

Physical Fitness Of Physical Therapy Students, Dennis Sobush, Richard Fehring

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Physical fitness norms do not exist for physical therapists or physical therapy students. This lack, in part, reflects the complexity of physical fitness and the scarcity of data reported on physical fitness norms of other populations. This report describes the methods used and the results obtained for 16 physical fitness factors of 98 female and 13 male physical therapy upperclassmen and discusses the implications of physical fitness in the practice of physical therapy. Means, standard deviations, ranges, and percentile rankings are given by sex for each of the 16 fitness factors. The purpose of this study was to begin to …

A Descriptive Study: The Views Of Touch As Related To Childrearing Practices Correlated With Certain Demographic Factors, Linda Lewis Dunn Jul 1983

A Descriptive Study: The Views Of Touch As Related To Childrearing Practices Correlated With Certain Demographic Factors, Linda Lewis Dunn

MSN Research Projects

This descriptive study was designed to correlate the views of touch as related to childrearing practices with certain demographic factors. The researcher hypothesized that there would be no significant difference when parent ing skills and abusive behavior were correlated with identified demographic variables based on the scores of the researcher-designed questionnaire. A researcher-designed survey was administered to 10 mothers who were participating in a Parents Anonymous group. Nine of the subjects had abused their child/children, while one subject stated she felt she could abuse. All subjects were natural mothers who had received prenatal care while pregnant. Seven subjects had experienced …

The Effect Of Therapeutic Touch On Anxiety And Physiological Measures, Marie Nicholas Bremner Jun 1983

The Effect Of Therapeutic Touch On Anxiety And Physiological Measures, Marie Nicholas Bremner

Nursing Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of therapeutic touch to anxiety, blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate of 30 hospitalized women between the ages of 30 and 65 with the medical diagnosis of cancer. Subjects were matched into three intervention groups; three consecutive days subjects received a five minute intervention by therapeutic touch, casual touch, or no touch. A-trait and A-state anxiety were measured by the Self-Evaluation Questionnaires developed by Spielberger, Gorsuch, and Lushene. A factorial two-way analysis of variance revealed that subjects who received intervention by therapeutio touch experienced a significant reduction in A-state …

Nursing Theses & Dissertations

The correlation between the nurses' attitudes toward death, as determined by the Questionnaire for Understanding the Dying Person and His Family, and the nurses' presence with a dying patient at the time of death was analyzed. Registered Nurses' Ability To Discriminate Similar Human Need Fulfillment Alterations Specific To Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease And To Diabetes Mellitus, Kathleen Bowen Waite

Nursing Theses & Dissertations

The problem for this research study was to ascertain if registered nurses of varying educational backgrounds and experience discriminated similar human needs as being altered by specific pathologic states. The two pathologic states studied were chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and diabetes mellitus, chosen for their high prevalence in the population. A population sample of 55 registered nurses practicing on medical units in five hospital settings were surveyed. Data for this study were collected using the Human Needs Assessment Scales developed for this study. It was determined that registered nurses in this study did discriminate similar human need fulfillment alterations specific …

A Study Of The Ability, Achievement, Demographic, And Social Interaction Characteristics Of Three Groups Of Students: Dropouts, Marginals, And High Achievers, Judy Stewart

Dissertations

In this study the ability, achievement, demographic, and social interaction characteristics of three groups of baccalaureate nursing students were investigated. The three groups of students studied were dropouts, marginals, and high achievers. The purpose of the study was to identify predominant characteristics of dropout and marginal students that would act to direct the development of programs in nursing education.

The population studied consisted of the Nazareth College 1981-1982 freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior nursing students. In addition, the 1976-1980 graduating nursing classes were studied, including the freshman through senior year data for these classes.

The results of the data analysis …
