Perceptions Of Midwestern Msn Nps Of The Dnp Degree, Margaret Gallagher
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Strong professional forces have emerged within healthcare with expectations for a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree for nurse practitioner (NP) practice. While NP contribution to societal healthcare is evident, most of these frontline workers are still only masters’ prepared nurses (MSN). A problem exists in that their views of the DNP have been minimally studied. Hence, the purpose of this study was to investigate perceptions of Midwestern MSN NPs of the DNP. The study was supported by the self-determination theory (SDT) proposing that motivation for goal achievement was driven by perceptions of intrinsic and extrinsic rewards, which set priorities …

Department Structure And Leadership Functions For Advanced Practice Providers, Deondela Love
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Department structure and leadership functions can influence work climate. In one healthcare system, advanced practice providers (APPs) worked in a decentralized structure with multiple leaders. This project explored the impact of the change to centralized leadership for APPs working in an academic healthcare system in which employee turnover was high and satisfaction was low. Surveys and interviews were used to identify the benefits of the strategies implemented and understand whether the change in organizational structure resulted in an improved work climate for …

Training For Advanced Practice Providers In A Heart Failure Unit, Merlyn Chua
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Information from anecdotal interviews at a practicum site indicated a lack of training for advanced practice providers (APPs) in core competencies critical for effective practice in a heart failure (HF) unit. The goal of this project was to assess the APPs' verbal reports and develop HF unit-specific training for APPs. The practice-focused question examined whether unit-specific training for HF APPs improved knowledge and skills in HF management. The Johns Hopkins nursing evidence-based practice model and Knowles's adult learning theory were used to create a survey, a focus group, and a pre/posttest assessment of knowledge and skills gap. Descriptive and inferential …

Examining Nurse Practitioners' Perceptions And Beliefs Regarding Hospice Referrals For African Americans, Karen Jackson Mcclary
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Terminally ill patients often have difficult choices at the end-of-life, and electing to receive hospice services is one of them. Hospice has been linked to improved quality of life and death and is accessible to terminally ill patients. Despite the accessibility, African American patients often make the decision to forgo hospice services. The purpose of this descriptive study was to explore perceptions and beliefs of nurse practitioners (NPs) regarding the lack of utilization of hospice for African American patients and the feasibility of NPs for initial referral for terminally ill African American patients. The research questions addressed whether an NP's …
