Rib fractures are a common consequence of blunt force trauma, producing pain and potentially leading to complications such as pneumonia, atelectasis, respiratory failure, and death. Due to physiological changes related to aging, older adults aged 65 and over are at increased risk for developing such complications. Aggressive treatment of pain has been recognized as paramount in preventing such consequences. General anesthesia has a profound effect on respiratory dynamics in the obese population. Obesity can contribute to a decreased functional residual capacity, reduced lung volumes, and an increased closing capacity. Positioning and procedural requirements can further complicate the respiratory status of the obese patient. Surgical procedures in the obese population have an increased risk for the formation of atelectasis. Postoperative residual muscle paralysis can lead to very serious complications, such as hypoxia, airway obstruction, and generalized muscle weakness after surgical procedures. Traditional anesthesia practice has utilized a class of medications called cholinesterase inhibitors to mitigate these complications. Cholinesterase inhibiting agents have the potential to create adverse effects of their own, such as bradycardia, due to the drug class’s indirect mechanism of action. An ideal reversal agent would reverse quickly, and reliably, with minimal adverse effects. Every year, millions of children receive anesthesia and experience separation from their parents which can cause anxiety due to unfamiliar situations, environments, or people. A search was completed using electronic databases, including Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and Pubmed. Damage caused by administering general anesthetics to the developing brain in young children and pregnant mothers is of concern among practicing anesthesia providers. Studies using young rodents and non-human primates have shown that animals are susceptible to neurodegeneration when exposed to high concentrations of general anesthesia. Randomized control trials using rodents as subjects used behavioral and histological experiments to determine the adverse effects of general anesthetics including the inhalation agents desflurane, isoflurane, and sevoflurane in addition to intravenous ketamine. Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) provides constant dialysis treatment and is the recommended treatment for hemodynamically unstable AKI patients. In 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2018) estimated there were 157,500 cases of hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP). Of those, ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) had declined with increased efforts aimed at prevention, while nonventilator pneumonia (NV-HAP) did not have such prevention interventions and escalated, with approximately 2300 cases and 5600 respectively reported in one state (Baker & Quinn, 2018).
