A Systematic Review Of The Effect Of Family-Centered Education On The Physical And Mental Health Of Middle Eastern Refugee Women, Holly Keylada, Debora Merheb, Emilia Folkerts, Julia Nix, Khloe Blakey, Kimberly Landrum, Cheryl Swanson

Nursing Undergraduate Work

Refugee women from the Middle East are underrepresented in research and meeting their physical and mental health needs remains a significant challenge for healthcare workers in countries of resettlement. In this systematic research review, we synthesize family- centered interventions to address mental, menstrual, and reproductive health within this population. Twenty-one relevant studies were identified, showing the benefits of providing culturally sensitive family-centered education through the integration of educational interventions focused on community outreaches, interpersonal relations, school-based education, social networks, and more. However, there is still a need for high-quality mental, reproductive, and menstrual intervention studies within resettled refugees from the …

The Effects Of Carbohydrate Counting On Hemoglobin A1c Levels In Adult Diabetics, Dillon Moore Apr 2023

The Effects Of Carbohydrate Counting On Hemoglobin A1c Levels In Adult Diabetics, Dillon Moore

Anna Vaughn School of Nursing Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Diabetes is one of the most prevalent disease processes in the world. Approximately 537 million people have diabetes (International Diabetes Federation, 2021). Hemoglobin A1C levels are used to monitor overall blood glucose control in three-month increments. If the hemoglobin A1C can be lowered, the person should achieve better blood glucose control. Since carbohydrates are the main contributor to blood glucose, this project’s goal is to determine if carbohydrate counting via Cornerstones4Care Meal Planning and Carb Counting booklet (Cornerstones4Care, 2021) (Appendix A) will help diabetics achieve a lower hemoglobin A1C. Data were collected from a retrospective chart review during a five-year …

The Effectiveness Of Virtual Reality For Pain Management Among Palliative Care Patients, Jenna Canfield, Niang Man, Aisha Suleiman, Ivy Oginga, Rachael Valentz Dr.

Nursing Undergraduate Work

Management of pain in palliative care patients remains to be a highly complex and individualized process that involves a combination of both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions (Garrett et al., 2020). However, despite current standards for care, pain remains to be poorly controlled compared to all other symptoms (Guenther et al., 2022; Natoli et al., 2015). Due to the prevalence and severity of pain among palliative care patients, many non-pharmacological interventions have been explored to improve quality of life. Recent studies have shown virtual reality (VR) to be successful in the management of acute pain (Chan et al., 2018). However, the …

Staffing shortages, high turnover rates, and prolonged work shifts has caused decreased sleep quality in nurses due to fatigue. The fatigued nurse causes concern for safety, coordination and agility, patient avoidance, lack of compassion, impaired cognitive function, risk for chronic diseases, and patient care errors. This systematic research review was designed to identify evidence-based practice nursing interventions currently being used to manage the effects of reduced sleep quality. Methods for performing this systematic research review were to search multiple databases using keywords, scanning article titles and abstracts, and critiquing for relevance and quality. Findings from this systematic review found multiple …

Risk For Maternal Infant Bonding Reduction In High Risk Deliveries And The Recovery Phases, Amanda M. Karimi, Corie Vanarsdale Msn

Nursing Undergraduate Work

Bonding is one of the first developmental tasks for infants and is imperative for successful growth. The bonding phase begins in the periods immediately following birth. Complications that inhibit bonding postpartum may delay this process. Breastfeeding barriers, maternal substance abuse, and poor maternal mental health are among the contributing factors to delayed bonding. The purpose of this research study was to answer the question, “What best practiced nursing interventions assist mothers to promote bonding with the newborn after high risk deliveries?” This research review included a sample size of 10 articles which provided a variety of interventions to promote bonding …

The Dancing Nurse: Addressing Barriers To The Implementation Of Movement-Based Interventions In Holistic Patient Care, Jessica Collier, Audrey Thompson Phd

Nursing Undergraduate Work

The efficacy of dance movement therapy (DMT) is well demonstrated in contemporary nursing literature; however, implementation by healthcare professionals is often limited. Dance movement therapy was pioneered in the mid-20th century by classically trained modern dancer Marian Chace. Recent trends toward patient-centered care and interdisciplinary approaches render therapies such as DMT important modalities which nurses and other healthcare providers may become familiar with. This systematic research review focused on answering the question: “what are hindrances perceived by members of the healthcare team to implementing DMT as an alternative treatment modality?” Two variables were identified for the purposes of this …

Assessment Of Cultural Competency Of The Lgbt Community In The Nursing Workforce, Joshua A. Abel, Anne Saleem, Sarah Turner, Jessica Zumwalde

Nursing Undergraduate Work

The lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community comprises a significant, growing patient population in the United States and faces a unique set of healthcare challenges which must be addressed by the healthcare system and those employed by it. The LGBT community, having experienced historic oppression and discrimination, has reflexively withdrawn from healthcare workers, refrained from disclosing its LGBT identity and become reluctant to seek healthcare, resulting in delayed treatments and poor patient outcomes. While recent years have brought improved provisions, social acknowledgment, and public acceptance to the LGBT population, health risks still prevail due to patients concealing their LGBT …

Most Effective Interventions For Disaster Relief Preparation, Elizabeth Keating, Faith Edwards, Cheryl Swanson Phd, Rn

Nursing Undergraduate Work

Because disasters are sometimes unpredictable and difficult to measure, it is exceedingly important to have properly trained healthcare professionals that are prepared for a variety of natural and manmade crises. Victims affected by disasters may be numerous and have severe injuries, but nurses, as first-responders, with proper education and experience can drastically reduce the amount of casualties in a particular disaster. However, it is clear that nurses currently feel unprepared in the event of a natural or manmade disaster, and therefore need more training and preparation for such occurrences. This systematic research review set out to find the most effective …
