Signs Of Growth And Healing: Health Care And Science, Richard J. Fehring Jan 2019

Signs Of Growth And Healing: Health Care And Science, Richard J. Fehring

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

MY ESSAY ON THE HISTORY OF Catholic Natural Family Planning (NFP) scientists (chapter 8 in this volume) ended with discussing scientists who were active during the papacy of John Paul II (1979-2005). This present essay continues with the time period from approximately 2000 to 2018 and, indeed, into the future. My purpose here, however, is to delineate signs of growth and healing in health care and science related to NFP and not to focus on individual NFP scientists. Given that purpose, recent trends in NFP science and historical factors that influence NFP science can provide us with signs of growth …

Increasing Communication Through Improved Nursing Education: The Histories, Policies, And Manufacturing Process Of Vaccines, Alyssa R. Gruich

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Increasing nursing education of vaccines is incredibly important when nurses are attempting to educate families on the risks and benefits of many childhood vaccines. Through learning about the history of major vaccines, vaccine policies and the vaccine manufacturing process, nurses may better understand how to communicate with families.

In this paper, a flexible family of distributions with unimodel, bimodal, increasing, increasing and decreasing, inverted bathtub and modified bathtub hazard rate called Burr III-Marshal Olkin-G (BIIIMO-G) family is developed on the basis of the T-X family technique. The density function of the BIIIMO-G family is arc, exponential, left- skewed, right-skewed and symmetrical shaped. Descriptive measures such as quantiles, moments, incomplete moments, inequality measures and reliability measures are theoretically established. The BIIIMO-G family is characterized via different techniques. Parameters of the BIIIMO-G family are estimated using maximum likelihood method. A simulation study is performed to illustrate the performance of the …

Exploring The Narratives Of Black Male Nurses In Southeast Georgia: Implications For The Implementation Of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy In Nursing Curriculum, Celine M. Pfund Jan 2019

Exploring The Narratives Of Black Male Nurses In Southeast Georgia: Implications For The Implementation Of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy In Nursing Curriculum, Celine M. Pfund

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

This dissertation inquiry explores the narratives of two Black male nurses in southeast Georgia. The framework for my research includes a variety of different theoretical components including works from both major nursing and curriculum studies scholars. The nursing workforce remains homogenized despite major recruiting. The intention of my research was to explore the experiences of Black male nurses to identify challenges, barriers, and systems of oppression that they may have encountered working in a profession dominated by White females in order to facilitate development of culturally responsive pedagogy in nursing. Methodologically, I mainly drew upon James Spradley’s work on …

Pediatric Oncology Nurses’ Perceptions Of Prognosis-Related Communication, Amy Rose Newman, Kristin Haglund, Cheryl C. Rodgers Jan 2019

Pediatric Oncology Nurses’ Perceptions Of Prognosis-Related Communication, Amy Rose Newman, Kristin Haglund, Cheryl C. Rodgers

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Disclosure of prognosis-related information is an essential aspect of communication with pediatric patients with cancer and their families. The nurse is believed to play an important role in this process, but nurse perceptions and experiences have not been well-described.

Purpose

Provide an exploration of pediatric oncology nurses’ experiences with prognosis-related communication (PRC).

Method

Mixed-methods, multiphase design. This paper highlights the qualitative portion of the study.

Findings

Three themes were identified: Importance of collaboration, impact of PRC, and delivery of prognostic information.

Discussion

Collaboration is a critical element of PRC. Nurses are often not included in the disclosure process, which …

Effect Of Implementing Discharge Readiness Assessment In Adult Medical-Surgical Units On 30-Day Return To Hospital The Readi Randomized Clinical Trial, Marianne E. Weiss, Olga Yakusheva, Kathleen L. Bobay, Linda L. Costa, Ronda G. Hughes, Susan A. Nuccio, Morris Hamilton, Sarah J. Bahr, Danielle M. Siclovan, James Bang

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Importance: The downward trend in readmissions has recently slowed. New enhancements to hospital readmission reduction efforts are needed. Structured assessment of patient readiness for discharge has been recommended as an addition to discharge preparation standards of care to assist with tailoring of risk-mitigating actions.

Objective: To determine the effect of unit-based implementation of readiness evaluation and discharge intervention protocols on readmissions and emergency department or observation visits.

Design, Setting, and Participants: The Readiness Evaluation and Discharge Interventions (READI) cluster randomized clinical trial conducted in medical-surgical units of 33 Magnet hospitals between September 15, 2014, and March 31, 2017, included all …

Effects Of Positive Thinking On Dementia Caregivers’ Burden And Care-Recipients’ Behavioral Problems, Abir K. Bekhet, Mauricio Garnier-Villarreal Jan 2019

Effects Of Positive Thinking On Dementia Caregivers’ Burden And Care-Recipients’ Behavioral Problems, Abir K. Bekhet, Mauricio Garnier-Villarreal

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Most dementia care is provided at home by family members. This caregiving places an additional burden on the family members, which can negatively impact their physical and psychological well-being. The caregivers’ burden can also contribute to behavioral problems in the care-recipients. The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating/moderating effects of positive thinking (PT) on the relationship between caregivers’ burden (embarrassment/anger, patient’s dependency, and self-criticism) and their care-recipients’ behavioral problems (memory, depression, and disruption) in a sample of 100 dementia caregivers. Results indicated that caregivers’ embarrassment, self-criticism, and perception of patient dependency predicts depression in care-recipients, and these …

Minimal hepatic encephalopathy has been shown to increase risk of involvement in road traffic accidents and alter
quality of life. This systematic review focused on the role of nonabsorbable disaccharides for the management of minimal hepatic encephalopathy. Randomized clinical trials that evaluated medical management of minimal hepatic encephalopathy were considered for inclusion. Individual studies compared lactulose with usual care and lactulose with probiotics and l-ornithine-l-aspartate. The outcome for examination was the neuropsychiatric test for cognitive function. Search strategies outlined by the Johanna Briggs Institute were used, and articles and references of selected articles were reviewed according to that methodology. Meta-analyses …
