Purpose: Acrobatics and Tumbling (A&T) is an emerging NCAA sport. Due to the novelty of the sport, limited research on injury incidence and correlates exists. Anecdotal evidence suggests that A&T presents with high injury rates. A relationship between vitamin D and bony injuries exists among athletes, but little is known about soft tissue injuries. Esophageal atresia (EA) is a rare congenital defect where the esophagus, during the early stages of development, does not fully form. This causes there to be no connection between the oral cavity and the stomach. Complications with EA treatment come into play when there is a long gap between the two segments of the esophagus, meaning they cannot simply be sewed together using anastomosis. A new device called Flourish has recently been approved by the FDA and may be a new and more humanitarian approach to solving long gap esophageal atresia in infants.

Purpose: Clinical leadership behaviors demonstrated by nurses delivering patient care are associated with improved patient outcomes and increased job satisfaction. Clinical leadership behaviors have not been studied in athletic training; therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate athletic trainers’ frequency of demonstrating these behaviors. Method: Participates completed an electronically distributed survey consisting of demographic variables, the Clinical Leadership Survey (CLS), and the Global Rating of Clinical Leadership Scale (GRCLS). Preeclamptic women have a high risk of severe hypotension related to spinal anesthesia while undergoing cesarean section Hypotension, short or cumulative episodes, increase nausea and vomiting in parturient and can potentially result in fetal acidosis, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy(HIE), and lower Apgar scores. Neuraxial labor analgesia for vaginal delivery or cesarean section is performed in more than 71% of women in the United States. Postdural puncture headache(PDPH) is a relatively common complication of neuraxial anesthesia. Epidural blood patch (EBP) is considered the gold standard treatment, and although EBP is a highly effective intervention, it is not without risk. There is growing evidence that less invasive alternative treatments, such as combined use of atropine and neostigmine have effectively relieved PDPH where traditional, conservative methods have failed. This study examined the attitudes held by both African Americans and Caucasians regarding colorectal cancer screening and the reasons why they avoid screenings even when clinically indicated by their physicians. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common and easily preventable types of cancer in the United States. Our purpose was to explore adolescent athletes’ social perspectives regarding sport and concussion. Methods: Using a qualitative study design we interviewed 12 interscholastic athletes who had sustained a sport-related concussion. We report the development of a strategy for obtaining a truly voluntary and informed consent for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) research with Burma-born refugees settled in Australia. Using a qualitative descriptive research design, we interviewed 29 providers of refugee services (PRS) including health care professionals (doctors, nurses, midwives), bilingual supporting staff (interpreters, social workers, settlement workers, community liaison officers) and administrative staff (practice managers, reception staff) who provide primary care services to refugees. Purpose/Objective: Characterize rigorously the preictal period in epilepsy patients to improve the development of seizure prediction techniques. Background/Rationale: 30% of epilepsy patients are not well-controlled on medications and would benefit immensely from reliable seizure prediction. Methods/Methodology: Computational model consisting of in-silico Hodgkin-Huxley neurons arranged in a small-world topology using the Watts-Strogatz algorithm is used to generate synthetic electrocorticographic (ECoG) signals. ECoG data from 18 epilepsy patients is used to validate the model. The African-American Alzheimer’s Caregiver Training and Support Project 2 (ACTS 2) is a faith-integrated, skills-training and support program for distressed African American family caregivers of persons living with dementia across Florida. Hypothesis and Objective: Genes participating in the notch signaling pathway are influenced by exposure to high nitrous oxide (HNO) levels. Notch signaling pathway genes are responsible for regulating cell fate, differentiation, and apoptosis. Dysregulation of these genes can contribute to tumorigenesis. Alterations in the expression of these genes in MCF7 breast cancer cells could help determine the effects of the notch signaling pathway on tumorigenesis as a result of exposure to nitrous oxide.

Methods: Samples of cDNA from MCF7 and MCF7-HNO cells were used in DNA microarray analysis. Qualifying genes of interest provided a p value < .05. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were defined and categorized using the Gene Oncology Uniprot (GO) Molecular Function database. These cells were further analyzed using a proprietary bioinformatics analysis created by our laboratory.

In 2018, the Clinical Exercise Physiology Lab (CEPL) undertook a year-long scientific Twitter campaign (#365Papers) where one peer-reviewed publication related to cancer and exercise/physical activity was tweeted per day.
