Factors Affecting Treatment Success In Community-Acquired Pneumonia, Canan Gündüz, Mehmet Sezai̇ Taşbakan, Abdullah Sayiner, Aykut Çi̇lli̇, Oğuz Kilinç, Ayşin Şakar Coşkun

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Treatment failure in hospitalized patients with community-acquired pneumonia is a major cause of mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the factors affecting treatment success in community-acquired pneumonia. Materials and methods: A total of 537 patients (mean age: 66.1 ± 15.8 years, 365 males) registered to the Turkish Thoracic Society Pneumonia Database were analyzed. Of these, clinical improvement or cure, defined as treatment success, was achieved in 477, whereas 60 patients had treatment failure and/or died. Results: Lower numbers of neutrophils (5989.9 ± 6237.3 vs. 8495.6 ± 7279.5/mm3), higher blood urea levels (66.1 ± 42.1 vs. 51.2 …

Abstract

Background

Lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) including Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a common infectious disease that is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The patterns of aetiological pathogens differ by region and country. Special attention must be paid to CAP in Southeast Asia (SEA), a region facing rapid demographic transition. Estimates burden and aetiological patterns of CAP are essential for the clinical and public health management. The purposes of the study are to determine the incidence, aetiological pathogens, clinical pictures and risk factors of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in the Vietnamese adult population.

Methods

A prospective surveillance for hospitalised adult …

To investigate the effect of the presence of pneumonia on the success of noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) cases with acute respiratory failure. Materials and methods: Sixty patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) due to COPD exacerbation were included. The patients were divided into 2 groups as those with pneumonia (Group 1) and without pneumonia (Group 2). According to initial pH values, cases were also divided into 3 subgroups based on pH values. C-reactive protein (CRP), APACHE II scores, requirement of endotracheal intubation, mortality, and duration of ICU and hospital stay were also …

The Role Of Quantitative D-Dimer Levels In The Follow-Up And Differential Diagnosis Of Pulmonary Thromboembolism And Community-Acquired Pneumonia, Ayhan Varol, Nurdan Köktürk, Hati̇ce Kiliç, Müge Aydoğdu, Numan Nadi̇r Eki̇m Jan 2012

The Role Of Quantitative D-Dimer Levels In The Follow-Up And Differential Diagnosis Of Pulmonary Thromboembolism And Community-Acquired Pneumonia, Ayhan Varol, Nurdan Köktürk, Hati̇ce Kiliç, Müge Aydoğdu, Numan Nadi̇r Eki̇m

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aim: To identify the quantitative D-dimer levels in pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) and hospitalized-community acquired pneumonia (CAP) patients, and to determine the alteration of D-dimer levels with anticoagulant or antibacterial therapy. It is not well known that the quantitative analysis of D-dimer has a role in the differential diagnosis of PTE from other diseases. Materials and methods: Serum D-dimer levels were measured and compared prospectively with a latex-enhanced immunoturbidimetric method at admission, before initiating any antibiotic or anticoagulant therapy and then at days 3, 10, and 30 of treatment in PTE and CAP patients. Results: A total of 80 patients (45 …

Investigation Of The Causative Agents For Community-Acquired Pneumonia In Adult Patients, Yasemi̇n Zer, Nazan Bayram, İclal Balci, Ayten Fi̇li̇z

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a common condition in healthy people, causing morbidity and mortality worldwide despite latest advances in therapy and immunization procedures. Causative agents cannot be detected in approximately 50% of CAP episodes and therapy is initiated empirically. We aimed to determine the spectrum and frequency of the causative agents in patients with CAP in a university hospital. Materials and methods: Seventy seven adult patients hospitalized with CAP from November 2007 to March 2008 were included. CAP was diagnosed with clinical, radiological, and laboratory signs. Results: Sputum and blood cultures grew Streptococcus pneumoniae in 15 specimens; Haemophilus influenzae in …

Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the oxidative stress measured by serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), and to evaluate their possible correlation with the serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and pneumonia severity index (PSI). Materials and Methods: The PSI, chest X-ray (CXR) scores, and the serum TAC, MDA, and CRP levels were determined in 67 CAP patients on admission and compared to 45 healthy controls. Results: In the whole study population, the TAC level was inversely correlated with CRP levels and WBC counts (r=-0.648, P=0.0001; r=-0.626, P=0.0001, respectively). Lower …
