Biofilm Formation In Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli: Association With Adhesion Factor Genes, Hojjatolah Zamani, Ali Salehzadeh

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Biofilm formation is a major determinant factor in the development of urinary tract infections (UTIs) by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). Several adhesion factors are involved in attachment of bacterial cells to the urinary tract and biofilm development. Materials and methods: The possible relationship between different adhesion factor genes (AFGs) and biofilm formation among UPEC isolates was investigated. Prevalence of different AFGs including fimA, fimH, papAH, papC, papEF, sfa-S, foc/G, and bmaE and their association to biofilm formation were investigated. Phenotypic expression of type 1 and P fimbriae was also investigated. Results: Our results showed that 84% of UPEC were …

To investigate whether prostatic inflammation affects the contractile responses of prostate tissue and then whether melatonin has any restorative effect on the contractile responses in a rat model of bacterial prostatitis at early stages. Materials and methods: We evaluated the nerve-evoked, adrenergic agonist-induced or cholinergic agonist-induced contractions of isolated prostate tissue at 24 and 72 h after intraurethrally instilled Escherichia coli-treatment. We also analyzed the histological changes in the prostate. Secondarily, we investigated the effect of melatonin pretreatment (7 days, 10 mg kg^{-1} day^{-1}) on the contractile responses and the histopathologic changes. Results: The degrees of acute inflammatory cell infiltration, …

Comparison Of Antibiotic Resistance Patterns Of Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli In Outpatient And Inpatient Populations From 1990 To 1996 In Bemidji, Mn, Gail R. Conway, Patrick Guilfoile

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

A retrospective study of antibiotic susceptibility was conducted on data from all uropathogenic Escherichia coli submitted to the MeritCare Clinic-Bemidji, MN and the North Country Regional Hospital-Bemidji, MN during 1990, 1993, and 1996. The proportion of antibiotic resistant strains was generally equal or higher in E. coli isolates from community-acquired infections than with E. coli isolates from nosocomial infections. Comparison with antibiotic prescriptions during 1990, 1993, and 1996 provided no clear relation between antibiotics prescribed for outpatient urinary tract infections and the proportion of E. coli strains resistant to those antibiotics. This suggests that factors other than selection for resistance …

Colicin Production And Colicin Typing Of Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli, Ayli̇n İmren Çarikçi, Güner Coşar

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Colicins are bactericidal macromolecules in protein structures and they are produced by some strains of Escherichia coli and Shigella, which are members of the Enterobacteriaceae. They have a bactericidal effect on the same species or closely related bacteria, but have no effect on the strains which produce them. In this study, 129 E. coli strains isolated from urine samples of patients in Izmir and Manisa were examined for colicin production, and the colicinogenic strains were examined for their colicin types by means of Horak specific indicator strains. Indicator strains were obtained from the National Type Culture Collection Hygiene and Epidemiology …
