Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) has a high prevalence in developing countries. We aimed to investigate the current prevalence of H. pylori, as well as its potential serum risk factors, in a population from southwest China.Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study included 10,912 subjects who received medical examinations at the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University in 2014. Data regarding physical examinations and biochemical measurements were collected, and H. pylori infection was diagnosed with a 13C-urea breath test. Logistic regression was conducted to identify the risk factors for H. pylori infection. Results: The infection rate of H. pylori was 34.4% …

Factors Associated With The Rate Of Copd Exacerbations That Require Hospitalization, Radisa Pavlovic, Srdjan Stefanovic, Zorica Lazic, Slobodan Jankovic Jan 2017

Factors Associated With The Rate Of Copd Exacerbations That Require Hospitalization, Radisa Pavlovic, Srdjan Stefanovic, Zorica Lazic, Slobodan Jankovic

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Exacerbations are key events in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Frequent exacerbations occurring during the natural course of COPD lead to deterioration of health-related quality of life and are major causes of morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to identify factors independently associated with frequent severe exacerbations of COPD that require hospitalization. Materials and methods: A case-control study was performed to analyze risk factors and frequency of severe exacerbations, which were defined by the GOLD guideline criteria. Stepwise multivariate regression was used to determine the significant predictors of frequent exacerbations. Results: Results revealed five independent predictors …

Repeated Prevalence Studies Of Nosocomial Infections In One University Hospital In Serbia, Milena Ilic, Ljiljana Markovic-Denic Jan 2017

Repeated Prevalence Studies Of Nosocomial Infections In One University Hospital In Serbia, Milena Ilic, Ljiljana Markovic-Denic

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Nosocomial infections occur worldwide and affect both developed and resource-poor countries. The aim of this paper was to determine the prevalence and risk factors for nosocomial infections in one Serbian hospital. Materials and methods: Three-point prevalence surveys were conducted in the Clinical Center of Kragujevac (1240 beds). The standard definitions for nosocomial infections of the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention were used. The authors conducted surveys according to the same protocol. Results: The prevalence of infected patients and the overall prevalence of nosocomial infections was 6.2% and 7.1% in 2003, 4.6% and 4.6% in 2005, and 7.6% and …

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiologic characteristics, the causative microorganisms and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns, and the prognostic risk factors for mortality in critically ill patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). Materials and methods: In this retrospective observational study, all the critically ill patients with VAP hospitalized in a medical/surgical intensive care unit (ICU) between January 2010 and June 2015 were evaluated. Patients' demographic features and microbiological data were reviewed. Results: A total of 417 patients were clinically diagnosed with VAP; 51.1% of them were male and the average age was found as 69.9 ± 15.9 …

Risk Factors Associated With Poor Outcome In Diabetic Foot Ulcer Patients, Saira Saleem, Nazim Hayat, Irshad Ahmad, Tanvir Ahmad, Abdulgaffar Rehan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Diabetic foot ulcers and related complications are a major cause of morbidity and hospital admissions. Our aim was to evaluate the risk factors associated with poor outcome in diabetic foot ulcers. Materials and methods: A prospective study was conducted on patients with diabetic foot ulceration attending the Madinah Teaching Hospital from June 2014 to December 2015. Potential risk factors and laboratory test results at presentation were recorded and their association with outcome (healing vs. amputation) was analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 22.0. Results: In total, 112 patients were studied during our study period. The majority of …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Colistin is gaining popularity against multidrug-resistant bacteria. The primary concern with colistin is its nephrotoxicity (NT). The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence and risk factors for NT and to evaluate the risk factors for mortality in the toxicity group. Materials and methods: NT was defined according to the RIFLE criteria. Data of patients who did or did not develop NT were compared. Positive and negative predictive values, risk ratio, and correlation coefficients were calculated. Results: NT was seen in 39 patients (70%). Hypoalbuminemia, old age, and the use of vasopressors (VPs) were associated with NT. …
