This project seeks to consolidate common immunization recommendations and preventative screening recommendations for adult women 18 years and older, based on the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations. This resource should be offered to patients of the primary care office, with the goal of providing information in a concise and approachable manner that allows patients to review general recommendations on their own, generate questions or express concerns about their health, and encourage patients to advocate for their own health and well-being. With this intervention, the broader goal is to increase immunization rates and …

Many refugees have fled Somalia over the past 30 years due to political instability and civil war. Since 1980, over 8,000 refugees have settled in Vermont, with about 9% of refugees being from Somalia. Community Health Centers of Burlington (CHCB) provides prenatal and primary care to many Somali women in the community. There are known gynecologic and obstetric health disparities for Somali women, such as significantly lower completion rates of mammography and pap smears than non-Somali patients. Research has shown that an understanding of cultural health beliefs and values are crucial for creating tailored prevention programs for refugee women. This …
Understanding One Dietary Supplement For Pcos, Eva Schofield
Understanding One Dietary Supplement For Pcos, Eva Schofield
Capstone Showcase
Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common condition in women of reproductive age, yet nearly 70% of individuals with PCOS remain undiagnosed. For many women who do receive a diagnosis, it takes experiencing symptoms for two years or longer and receiving care from an average of 3 different providers before a diagnosis can be established. In an environment where prevalence is high, diagnosis rate is low and delayed, and dissatisfaction is prevalent regarding the health care women receive, many patients may turn to self-diagnosis and online resources to find their own therapeutic options. This CME article aims to …

Intersectionality, Access, And Women’S Health: Engaging And Enacting A Feminist Model Of Health Care, Nidhi Chawla
Intersectionality, Access, And Women’S Health: Engaging And Enacting A Feminist Model Of Health Care, Nidhi Chawla
Honors Scholar Theses
“Intersectionality, Access, and Women’s Health: Engaging and Enacting a Feminist Model of Health Care” takes seriously the potential role feminist theory can play in the making of a more accessible and effective model of medical care. In terms of theory and methodology, this thesis draws upon Kimberlė Crenshaw’s influential notion of “intersectionality” as a means of mapping multiple identities and subjectivities; as an additional lens, the thesis accesses Audre Lorde’s insistence that one cannot rely on established systems as the basis for progressive politics. Consistent with the reflexive dynamics of intersectional feminism, and guided by the notion that the personal …

The Impact Of Socioeconomic Factors On Food Insecurity Among Syrian Refugees In Florida, Racha Sankar
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Syrian refugees settled in the United States may experience food insecurity due to different socioeconomic factors that may include nutrition knowledge, language proficiency, women’s education, and perceived stress. The structure and the type of households may also contribute to food insecurity in this population.
The objective of this study was to measure food security among Syrian refugees residing in Florida. It also aimed to determine the socioeconomic factors that may attribute to food insecurity at household level.
A comprehensive 228-item questionnaire was administered to N=80 households (n=43 in rural areas, n=37 in urban areas). Families with and without children were …
Patient Education On The Association Of Hormonal Contraception With Depression, Julia E. Hannigan
Patient Education On The Association Of Hormonal Contraception With Depression, Julia E. Hannigan
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Hormonal contraceptive agents are widely used by women during their reproductive years. In recent years, research has been released linking hormonal contraception with the initiation of antidepressant medication and a first diagnosis of depression. More research is still warranted in order to further elucidate the relationship between hormonal contraception and depression, but current evidence prompts the necessity for shared decision making between clinicians and women considering treatment with hormonal contraceptive agents. The goal of this project is to give providers easily accessible patient educational materials in the form of epic smart phrases to aid in informed decision making.

Many people with vaginas feel uncomfortable discussing vaginal discomfort with their health care providers. Not disclosing symptoms such as pain, itching, dyspareunia, etc can lead to long term complications such as PID and significantly impact quality of life. I designed a pamphlet to help normalize talking about one's vagina to one's health care provider. This pamphlet outlines common causes and risks of vaginitis.

Vaccination against Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is able to protect against 70% of strains causing cervical cancer and and 90% of strains causing genital warts, yet vaccination rates for boys and girls are still well below average vaccination against many other preventable diseases. Experts agree that patient education and strong physician recommendation of HPV vaccination of pre-teens and teenagers is essential in improving vaccination rates in CT. The objective of this project was to assess and improve understanding of HPV, its implications, and vaccination in a high school population in Danbury, CT. The education session significantly improved students' understanding of HPV …

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
About one half of pregnancies in the United States are unintended (mistimed or unwanted). Only 54% of pregnancies in Vermont are planned and only 29% of women in Vermont have talked to a health care worker about healthy pregnancies prior to conception. Physicians are equipped to provide the necessary information to women about preconception care and contraception, but do not regularly have these conversations with the majority of their patients. One Key Question is an initiative developed by the Oregon Foundation for Reproductive Health that allows providers to screen women patients for their pregnancy intention in the next year and …
