An Investigation Of The Effects Of Ivermectin On Blood Serum, Semen Hyaluronidase Activities And Spermatological Characteristics In Sheep, Sadetti̇n Tanyildizi, Tanzer Bozkurt

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of ivermectin on the hyaluronidase activities of blood serum and semen and on the sperm characteristics in sheep. In this investigation 18 sheep, at the age of 2 years and weighing between 50-60kg were used. After the administration of ivermectin subcutanously at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg, semen and blood samples were taken at different times. The hyaluronidase activities of blood serum and semen samples in sheep were determined to increase significantly (p

Electrophoretypes Of Bovine Rotaviruses Detected In Turkey, Aykut Özkul, Kadi̇r Yeşi̇lbağ, Taner Karaoğlu, İbrahi̇m Burgu

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A total of 83 faecal samples carrying rotavirus were used in this survey. Five different electrophoretypes were distinguished according to their migration patterns. All the rotaviruses examined in this research proved to be group A and to have short migration patterns. While local migration patterns were detected in individual herds (e.g. A, B, C, M, P and T), two different migration profiles were detected in herd K during rotavirus enteritis after a two year interval. The greatest variations in electrophoretic mobility in the groups were found in segments 2-4, and 6-9, while segments 1, 10, and 11 showed the most …

The Application Of Hypoxanthine Activity As A Quality Indicator Of Cold Stored Fish Burgers, Sühendan Mol, Nuray Erkan, Candan Varlik Jan 2002

The Application Of Hypoxanthine Activity As A Quality Indicator Of Cold Stored Fish Burgers, Sühendan Mol, Nuray Erkan, Candan Varlik

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Seafoods are very perishable, and many different methods are used for the determination of their quality. Sensory and hypoxanthine values of cold stored trout burgers, which we prepared, were determined during a 28-day period. Burgers spoiled after the 21st day of storage. The TVB-N values were still very low when the burgers spoiled and the pH values decreased during their storage. Therefore total volatile bases nitrogen and pH analyses were not useful for the determination of the quality of trout burgers. There was a negative correlation between the sensory and the hypoxanthine values during the storage period. Thus, hypoxanthine analysis …

The influence of ammonia concentration on ^{15}N-ammonia incorporation and de novo synthesis of amino acids by three predominant non-cellulolytic species of ruminal bacteria, Prevotella bryantii B_{1}4, Selenomonas ruminantium HD4 and Streptococcus bovis ES1, was investigated. The medium contained pancreatic casein hydrolysate (comprising mainly peptides with some amino acids) at a concentration of 1 g/litre and additions of graded concentrations of 15NH4Cl. When the initial concentration of ammonia increased from 0.045 to 0.436 g N/L in the growth medium, the proportion of cellular nitrogen and amino acid nitrogen derived from ammonia by P. bryantii and S. ruminantium increased (ranging from 0.33 …

As grass carp culture for vegetation control in freshwater is a new field in Turkey the disease problems of grass carp have not been well documented. Spontaneous disease occurrence in the course of grass carp culture was reported in the present study. During the culture of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) some disease problems occurred causing a high level of mortality. In two-month old fry (5.55±0.19 g) fed with alfa-alfa in out-door conditions bacterial disease and some ectoparasites on the gills and skin were detected. The bacterium was identified as Aeromonas hydrophila and the ectoparasites as Trichodina sp., Dactylogyrus sp. and …

Larvae of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus were identified in the feces of a 2-year-old female cat suffering from dyspnea and incoordination for 18 months. The larvae had a terminal S-shaped projection and a subterminal dorsal spine. The larvae measured 363-378x15 µm (aver. 370x15 µm). Firstly, moxidectin (0.4 mg/kg) was given subcutaneously to 3 healthy stray cats over 1 year old to check adverse effects on cats. No adverse reaction was observed. Then a subcutaneous injection of moxidectin (0.4 mg/kg) was given to the infected cat for treatment on day 0 and this was repeated on day 51. Seventy-nine days after the 2nd …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was carried out to estimate the heritabilities and the genetic and phenotypic correlations between some milk production traits in Holstein cows in Ceylanpınar State Farm. A mixed-model equation was used in the study. The heritabilities and the genetic correlations were estimated by the Restricted Maximum Likelihood method (REML) for all the variables. Phenotypic correlations were estimated from measurements of the traits. Paternal half-sib correlations were used for the estimation of the heritability values. The heritabilities for the 2x305ME milk yield, the lactation length, the length of the dry period, and the calving interval were estimated to be 0.169±0.0287, …

Investigation Of Therapeutic And Possible Toxic Effects Of Gentamicin And Enrofloxacin In Combination Against Experimental Salmonella Enteritidis Infection In Embryonated Eggs, Saeid Akbarzahed Kolahi, Oya Keleş

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The efficacy of the combination of gentamicin and enrofloxacin on the reduction of Salmonella enteritidis contamination rates in embryonated eggs that were experimentally infected was studied. In order to determine the optimum concentration of the combination for egg injection, the antibacterial activities of these antibiotics were tested in vitro against Salmonella enteritidis by the serial broth macrodilution method. The in vitro interaction test of gentamicin and enrofloxacin has indicated that these two antibacterial agents had an additive effect against Salmonella enteritidis. In order to examine the effect of the combination of gentamicin and enrofloxacin in vivo the eggs that were …

White layers, 68 weeks of age, were housed at a density of 3, 4 or 5 hens/cage (respectively 640, 480 and 384 cm^2/hen); brown layers were housed at 3 or 4 hens/cage (respectively 640 and 480 cm^2/hen). The results indicated that housing at 3 or 4 hens/cage did not affect egg production or egg quality significantly. Increasing the cage density to 5 hens/cage in white layers decreased egg production and Haugh Units. However, it was …
