Dispelling Some Myths About 'Dermo', J R. Edwards Jan 1984

Dispelling Some Myths About 'Dermo', J R. Edwards

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

There are a lot of misconceptions and myths about dermatophilosis, a disease which can kill young lambs, affect wool quality, make shearing difficult and make sheep susceptible to fly strike.

One misconception is perpetuated by the incorrect use of the name mycotic dermatitis, which implies that a fungus causes the disease. This is not so.

The disease is caused by the bacteria Dermatophilus congolensis, which attacks the sheep's skin and eventually forms a lesion or scab in the wool, and so is better called dermatophilosis, 'dermo' or 'lumpy wool'.

Veterinary Epidemiologist at the Albany Regional Office, J.R. Edwards, discusses …

Allergies Related To Mosquitoes, Repellents, And Insecticides, James T.C. Li, Charles E. Reed Jan 1984

Allergies Related To Mosquitoes, Repellents, And Insecticides, James T.C. Li, Charles E. Reed

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Man's skin response to the mosquito bite exhibits great individual variability. The everyday immediate reaction consists o f a red, or erythematous wheal that lasts only one or two hours. Twenty to 24 hours after the mosquito bite, a delayed reaction of erythema, swelling, and itching may also occur. An individual may exhibit an immediate reaction, delayed reaction, both reactions, or neither reaction. Studies suggest that sensitization to mosquito saliva may be responsible for the inflammatory response. This hypothesis is supported by histologic studies which demonstrate striking infiltration of inflammatory cells at the site of mosquito bites. Severe local reactions …

Mosquitoes As Vectors Of Disease In Minnesota, John W. Washburn Jan 1984

Mosquitoes As Vectors Of Disease In Minnesota, John W. Washburn

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Diseases due to mosquito-borne viruses occur every summer in Minnesota. The incidence of Western encephalitis and LaCrosse encephalitis is usually low, but outbreaks of Western encephalitis have occurred in the past. Evidence of Jamestown Canyon virus activity has been found in Minnesota. This virus may represent a newly-recognized cause of central nervous system disease and encephalitis. The epidemiology of the mosquito-borne encephalitis viruses found in Minnesota and the methods of disease surveillance and control are discussed.

Minnesota's Response: The Mosquito Research Program, John Washburn, Nancy Read

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The Minnesota Mosquito Research Program (MMRP) was established in September 1984 in response to a request by Governor Perpich. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), as the lead agency, brought together a Working Group of distinguished North American experts to discuss the problems related to mosquito research and control. This Working Group- with advice from legislators and representatives from the community, environmental groups, and state and federal agencies- made recommendations for the development of a mosquito research and control program in Minnesota.

The Working Group divided its recommendations into two areas, research and administrative structure. An extensive research program in …

The Bush Tick, R B. Besier Jan 1984

The Bush Tick, R B. Besier

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

A newly discovered livestock parasite has focused attention on farms in the Walpole district in the south-west of Western Australia. Ticks submitted to the Department of Agriculture in December 983 were identified as the bush tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis. An intensive campaign to locate areas of infestation and to limit spread was started in January 1984.

The bush tick is a pest of livestock in some areas of New South Wales and Queensland. It is important in a narrow coastal strip from Sydney to Brisbane where total summer rainfall can exceed 1000 mm. In this area heavy tick infestation causes …

New Developments In Footrot Control, R B. Richards, L. J. Depiazzi, R. V. R. Gwynn

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The eradication policy for footrot in sheep adopted by the Western Australian Department of Agriculture has produced an overall decline in the number of properties with the disease.

Our knowledge of the disease has improved substantially as a result of the research conducted at the Slabany Regional Veterinary Laboratory in recent years. Laboratory tests now sssist stock inspectors and veterinary officers to distinguish between different forms of footrot and to quarantine and eradicate accordingly.

The recent discovery of more effective foot-bathing solutions by officers of the Victorian Department of Agriculture will greatly assist further eradication procedures.

Western Australia's sheep industry …

The Synthesis Of Various Substituted 3-Amino-7-Hydroxy-2,2-Dimethyltetralins And Their Opioid-Related Activities, David Alan Lippman Jan 1984

The Synthesis Of Various Substituted 3-Amino-7-Hydroxy-2,2-Dimethyltetralins And Their Opioid-Related Activities, David Alan Lippman

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A series of aminotetralones and aminotetralins were synthesized from the common intermediate F, 3-amino-2,2-dimethyl-7-methoxy- 1-tetralone. The final compounds derived from F were simple substituted and/or reduced analogues. The products would allow a progressive structure activity relationship to be drawn based on pharmacological testing.

The common intermediate F was synthesized utilizing a six step procedure starting with p-methoxyphenylacetic acid. The overall yield from the precursor to the F:HC1 was 25%. Compound F was either O-demethylated to form 3-amino-2,2-dimethyl-7-hydroxy-l-tetralone (I) or was dimethylated on the amine and subsequently O-demethylated to yield the 3-dimethylamino-7-hydroxy-2,2-dimethyl-l-tetralone (J). The last major modification was the reduction of …

Computerized Formulation And Optimization Of Medicated Chewing Gum, Daniel J. Berky Jan 1984

Computerized Formulation And Optimization Of Medicated Chewing Gum, Daniel J. Berky

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Sixty Four caffeinated chewing gum preparations were formulated by varying the amounts of (i) cinnamaldhyde, (0-0.75%), (ii) docusate (0-0.5%) and (iii) sucrose (40-60%). The gum base consisted of 33.33% yellow beeswax and 66.66% polyisobutylene MH, and was added, adjusting for a final weight of 2 grams per gum. The amount of caffeine was maintained at 100mg. The preparations were subjected to an in vivo release study as well as a hedonic survey with a panel of student volunteers.

Data were analyzed by using multiple linear regression on a mainframe computer. The resulting mathematical model was used to predict a theoretically …

Protecting Off-Shears Sheep In Adverse Weather, T M. Ellis Jan 1984

Protecting Off-Shears Sheep In Adverse Weather, T M. Ellis

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

In January 2982 in the Narrogin-Darkan area of Western Australia, about 14,500 sheep up to 40 days off-shears died after a 48-hour period of heavy soaking rain that followed a thunderstorm three days previously. An estimated 100,000 sheep died throughout the South-West at the time.

P. G. Buckman - at the time Department of Agriculture District Veterinary Officer, Narrogin - surveyed 17 properties in the area. He found that losses in unshedded sheep 0 to 40 days off-shears ranged from 0 to 84 per cent of sheep on the property with an overall average of 27.9 per cent. Rainfall in …

Whales Are Not Cetacean Resources, Dale Jamieson, Tom Regan Jan 1984

Whales Are Not Cetacean Resources, Dale Jamieson, Tom Regan

Conservation Collection

What we know about whales is sufficient for ascribing to them the analogues of human rights, including the fundamental right to be treated with respect. Once we recognize their possession of this right, it follows that whales are not to be used or exploited by us for the promotion of our ends, however "benign" they may appear. In the case of humans, to refrain from killing them is to discharge only a small part of our total duties. We must also refrain from exploiting them, whether "consumptively" or "nonconsumptively." Having come as far as we have in our understanding of …

Pharmacognosy Of The Saururaceae : Microscopy Of Powdered Drugs, Prakash Vaman Mallya Jan 1984

Pharmacognosy Of The Saururaceae : Microscopy Of Powdered Drugs, Prakash Vaman Mallya

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Plants of the family Sauruaceae are used in folk medicine in various parts of the world. Chemistry of some plants of this family and their chemotaxonomy has been investigated in our laboratory (12).

It is very difficult to establish identity and authenticity of commercially available crude drugs and powders of the Saururaceae because a detailed, collective study of microscopic features of these plants is not available. Original papers establishing plants of this family (see later) do not include microscopic features; they describe only gross morphologic and other classical features required for systematics. They are not useful for a pharmacologist in …

Observations On Relationships Between Limb Measurements And Mode Of Locomotion In Malaysian Turtles, Duayne Nyckel Jan 1984

Observations On Relationships Between Limb Measurements And Mode Of Locomotion In Malaysian Turtles, Duayne Nyckel

Masters Theses

Twelve Genera (spanning three Families) of Malaysian Turtles were studied to determine whether bone lengths could be correlated to mode of locomotion. Ulna, humerus, tibia, femur, coracoid (among others) were measured and results were presented graphically. Five of the genera were observed singly in a large aquarium. Data were recorded on the amount of time each spent in different locomotor modes. Both limb length data and aquarium observations suggest that turtles can be grouped into three main locomotor habits (i.e. terrestrial walking, bottomwalking, and swimming). The terrestrial group includes the genera, Geochelone, Kinixys, and Gopherus. Bottomwalkers include …

Evaluation Of Peptide Assimilation In Ehrlich Ascites Tumor Cells, John M. Castellano Jan 1984

Evaluation Of Peptide Assimilation In Ehrlich Ascites Tumor Cells, John M. Castellano

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The dipeptides glycyl-L-(3H)-leucine and L-phenylalanyl-L-(3H)-leucine were synthesized in radioactive form and utilized in the analysis of peptide transport and hydrolysis by Ehrlich ascites tumor cells. The tumor cells were cultured in the abdominal cavity of CF-1 albino mice and harvested into sterile isotonic buffer for all experimental analyses.

The results of this study reveal that the tumor cells rapidly accumulate radiolabel when incubated with the above mentioned peptides, but that the peptide is most probably hydrolyzed extracellularly and free L-(3)-leucine transported. This hypothesis is based on the observations of reduction in accumulation of radiolabel …
