• Enhanced Surgical Recovery Programs Improve Perioperative Outcomes for Cancer Patients: For patients undergoing cancer surgery, potential complications and long recovery times can delay the delivery of additional life-saving therapy. To improve patients' perioperative outcomes and clear the way for timely administration of additional therapies, several surgical teams at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center gave begun using enhanced surgical recovery programs (ESRPs).

During 2015, its 117th anniversary year, MLA will celebrate a novel and permanent way of informing both residents and visitors to Philadelphia about the association. Several months ago, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission voted to approve the nomination of an official State Historical Marker to commemorate MLA's founding in Philadelphia in 1898. The text of the marker will not be revealed until the marker's dedication ceremony in keeping with the commission's guidelines.

When the Europeans first colonized New England they initiated the process of transforming the landscape into something more familiar. In order to ensure access to food and medicine and recreate the pastoral landscape of the Old World they brought with them a variety of known plant species for cultivation. With time, shifts in medical practice, agriculture, food preservation, and dietary preferences, reliance on these plants declined. As knowledge of these plant species disappeared from popular consciousness, so too did they disappear into the wilds of America, exploiting new found ecological niches, and becoming New England’s naturalized flora. Edward William Alton Ochsner kept a plain, metal card file in which he recorded close to 50 years worth of medical experiences, research, and insights. The most populated topics were filed as "Cancer, Lung" and "Cancer, Bronchogenic." These reflected his areas of greatest interest, for which he would go on to produce groundbreaking work. Of his many lifetime accomplishments, he is perhaps best known for being the first to report a link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer. Recently, a mental health museum and archive of artifacts, photographs, and documents was established on the grounds of Patton State Hospital in Highland, California. This paper discusses the medical response to the Black Death in both Europe and the Middle East. The Black Death was caused by a series of bacterial strands collectively known as Yersinia pestis. The Plague originated in the Mongolian Steppes. It was spread westward by the east-west trading system. Once it arrived in the Crimea in 1346, Italian merchants helped spread it throughout the Mediterranean. Medicine in Europe and the Middle East were centered on Galen’s theory of humors. Frederic “Fred” E. Mohs was an “honest and good man, a ferocious and courageous worker.”1 Husband, father of three, prolific writer, and speaker, Dr. Mohs was a pioneer in many fields. His desire to do good was fueled by his enthusiasm for scientific advancement (Frederic E. Mohs Jr., personal communication, 2014). He is most remembered for Mohs Micrographic Surgery, formerly chemosurgery, which allows visualization and examination of all tissue margins achieving skin cancer cure rates of 98 to 99 per cent.

The end of the Late Bronze Age in the Near East (1300 - 1200 BCE) saw the widespread collapse of several large cultural centers, the reasons for which are a subject of continued debate. Evidence from events leading up to this cultural collapse suggest epidemic disease may have factored into the eventual downfall of these early civilizations. This thesis focuses on the architectural work of Renaissance master Michelangelo Buonarroti, who, perhaps, is better known for his painting and sculpture than for his architecture. Nevertheless, his buildings are revered by architectural historians, such as James Ackerman, for their mimicry of bodily motion and emotion. Under the influence of Renaissance humanism, it was not uncommon for architects to validate their designs by reference to the human body, for example, basing the dimensions of a basilica on ideal bodily proportions.
