Cerebellopontine Angle Meningioma Mimicking Acute Stroke, Milan Terzic, Yash B. Patel Jun 2024

Cerebellopontine Angle Meningioma Mimicking Acute Stroke, Milan Terzic, Yash B. Patel

Graduate Medical Education Research Journal

Cerebellopontine angle meningiomas are slow-growing benign tumors of the brain with a largely indolent course until compressive and mass effects occur with adjacent neural structures. Clinical presentations are variable and dependent on the rate of growth and location and tend to progress over a longer period. Acute presentations are less common and require consideration of ubiquitous etiologies. A 62-year-old male with a history of hypertension, benign prostatic hyperplasia, dyslipidemia, and gout presented to the emergency department with a sudden onset of dizziness, loss of balance, and persistently elevated blood pressure. The examination was positive for left dysmetria, dysdiadochokinesia, and tandem …

Breathless Laughter: Tackling Tussive Syncope In The Shadows Of Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Milan Terzic, Yash B. Patel

Graduate Medical Education Research Journal

Cough is a common complaint in the inpatient and outpatient setting. Most cases are caused by upper airway syndrome, gastroesophageal reflux disease, asthma, bronchitis, or infections. Complications that can be life-threatening include syncope and arrhythmias. Our case is of a 67-year-old obese male who had a chronic cough that led to syncope. The chronic cough was present for months, non-responsive to symptomatic treatment, and negative on outpatient work up with no clear common causes leading to hospitalization. After extensive imaging and cardiopulmonary work up yielding normal results, his underlying obstructive sleep apnea and therapy noncompliance was a likely cause. After …

Graduate Medical Education Research Journal

Background: Kidney stones are prevalent, and surgical treatment is based on multiple factors. Frailty is the collective decline of organ systems that can lead to adverse events and is considered prior to surgery for risk-benefit analysis. The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) utilizes risk-adjusted data to monitor outcomes, provide quality benchmarks, and decrease complications. The impact of frailty with the modified 5-item frailty index has not previously been evaluated for patients undergoing urolithiasis procedures.

Methods: Data was collected from 1329 patients who underwent surgery for urolithiasis. The primary outcome was 30-day all-cause morbidity. Associations between variables, including those …

Barriers To Education: Limited Accessibility Of Study Material Used During Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship Training, Kieran Boochoon, Andrew Yousef, Deborah Watson

Graduate Medical Education Research Journal

Purpose: The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) Fellowship Compendium is an extensive bibliography that serves to prepare fellows for their end-of-year board exams. Access to a current version is variable among fellowship programs. If Compendium articles—current and updated—are made directly available to fellows on the Fellows-In-Training AAFPRS website, then easier access to the preparatory exam material could improve their review of the material and their overall education. This study surveyed past AAFPRS fellows to determine the usefulness of hyperlinks to the Compendium bibliography.

Methods: AAFPRS fellows from 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 received a 9-question survey by email …

Rethinking Disability Simulations For Occupational And Physical Therapy Students: Integrating The Social Model Of Disability, Sara Kate Frye, Monique C. Chabot

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Disability simulations traditionally have been used in many healthcare profession educational programs with the intent to foster empathy and positive viewpoints towards people with disabilities. However, research is inconclusive regarding the effectiveness of these activities. The appropriateness of these activities has also been called into question when considering disability as a form of diversity and social justice, with recommendations to utilize the Social Model of Disability to frame activities. Methods: A mixed-methods study was conducted to explore the efficacy of a temporary orthopedic injury simulation assignment on first-year occupational and physical therapy students’ viewpoints regarding working with people with …

What Do Extension And Public Health Educators Need To Address Substance Misuse?, Lisa Washburn, Karen Franck

The Journal of Extension

Limited organizational capacity has hindered Extension’s ability to address substance misuse in communities. To inform capacity-building efforts, we obtained Extension educator and health educator feedback on opportunities, challenges and resource needs using the Delphi technique. Opportunities included collaboration and partnerships with local entities. Stigma, inadequate resources, and limited knowledge and skills of educators were challenges. Top resource needs were updated youth curricula, funding, and clear guidance on what educators can do and what should be referred externally. Findings provide insights to educator perceptions and suggest additional training and resources needed to implement evidence-based approaches to address substance misuse.

Global Implications Of Covid-19 On Education And Research In Healthcare And Stem: Analysis Of Case Studies, Yumna Indorewala, Santanu De

FDLA Journal

The zoonotic novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2 posed major threats to the world’s economy, social development, and public health. Education and research in STEM and healthcare were no exceptions to the global implications of the Coronavirus Infectious Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Social distancing guidelines were initially recommended to refrain from in-person operations for preventing the transmission of the virus. As academic organizations implemented multifarious methods to effectively transition to remote/online or hybrid educational formats, COVID-19 necessitated designing, adopting, as well as evaluating the efficacy of new instructional approaches, especially for disciplines that require active, experiential learning such as healthcare and STEM. These …

Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Students’ Experiences With The Use Of Case-Based Learning To Develop Skills For Evidence-Based Practice, Aleah S. Brock

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

The American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) states that practitioners should use the principles of evidence-based practice (EBP) for clinical decision making. However, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) often report a lack of understanding, time, and resources to implement EBP. Clinicians who were exposed to EBP training during their graduate program or clinical fellowship are more likely to use EBP in their clinical practice; therefore, graduate programs in SLP must provide explicit EBP training to upcoming clinicians. At present, no consensus exists on the best way to train students in the principles of EBP. The present study sought to investigate student experiences and …
