Effects Of Diabetes Mellitus On The Healing Of The Dental Pulp, Stuart Evan Garber Jun 2006

Effects Of Diabetes Mellitus On The Healing Of The Dental Pulp, Stuart Evan Garber

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) has been implicated as a factor affecting healing. The purpose of this study was to use the healing of experimentally exposed pulps subsequent to pulp capping as a model to determine the effect of DM on healing.

Twenty-two Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups of eleven animals each. In one group, DM was induced by injection of 70 mg/KG of streptozotocin. In the other group, the animals were injected with sterile saline. Under anesthesia with Ketamine and Xylazine, the pulps of the maxillary first molars of all rats were exposed using a 1/16 round bur under …

Diabetes Prevention Education For Mexican American Women With Gestational Diabetes: Pilot Testing A Videotape, Carol Anne Easton May 2006

Diabetes Prevention Education For Mexican American Women With Gestational Diabetes: Pilot Testing A Videotape, Carol Anne Easton

Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a culturally sensitive educational videotape on the knowledge of prevention of Type 2 diabetes after pregnancy, in pregnant gestational diabetic (GDM) women over 18 years old, who attended the Diabetes in Pregnancy Program at a university health center in a large southwestern city. Mexican American GDM women have a high risk for Type 2 diabetes, 80% in 5 years if their diabetes status is reclassified pre-diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance during their early postpartum exam (Kjos. 1995). But the return-to-clinic rate for the women who attend this clinic is …

Cationic Amino Acid Transport Across The Blood-Brain Barrier Is Mediated Exclusively By System Y+, Robyn L. O'Kane, Juan R. Viña, Ian Simpson, Rosa Zaragozá, Ashwini Mokashi, Richard A. Hawkins Mar 2006

Cationic Amino Acid Transport Across The Blood-Brain Barrier Is Mediated Exclusively By System Y+, Robyn L. O'Kane, Juan R. Viña, Ian Simpson, Rosa Zaragozá, Ashwini Mokashi, Richard A. Hawkins

Publications and Research

Cationic amino acid (CAA) transport is brought about by two families of proteins that are found in various tissues: Cat (CAA transporter), referred to as system y+, and Bat [broad-scope amino acid (AA) transporter], which comprises systems b0,+, B0,+, and y+L. CAA traverse the blood-brain barrier (BBB), but experiments done in vivo have only been able to examine the BBB from the luminal (blood-facing) side. In the present study, plasma membranes isolated from bovine brain microvessels were used to identify and characterize the CAA transporter(s) on both sides of the BBB. From these studies, it was concluded that system y+ …

Air Pollutants And Respiratory Symptoms Among Adults, Paulo A. Lotufo Jan 2006

Air Pollutants And Respiratory Symptoms Among Adults, Paulo A. Lotufo

Paulo A Lotufo

Air pollutants are associated with adverse respiratory effects mainly in susceptible groups such as children, elderly people and people with pre-existent respiratory disease. This study was designed to assess the impact of the inorganic composition of particulate matter on 33 adult asthmatics respiratory functions in São Paulo city, Brazil. From May to July 2002, fine and coarse particulate matter fractions were collected and trace metals (Fe2+, Mn2+, Zn2+, Pb2+, Cu2+) and major ions (Na+, Mg2+, K+, Ca2+, NH4 +, Cl-, NO3-, SO42-) composition was determined in each aqueous-extract fraction by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry with Graphite Furnace (AAS-GF) and Ion Chromatography, …

The Acute-Phase Proteins Serum Amyloid A And C Reactive Protein In Transudates And Exudates, Paulo A. Lotufo Jan 2006

The Acute-Phase Proteins Serum Amyloid A And C Reactive Protein In Transudates And Exudates, Paulo A. Lotufo

Paulo A Lotufo

The distinction between exudates and transudates is very important in the patient management. Here we evaluate whether the acute-phase protein serum amyloid A (SAA), in comparison with C reactive protein (CRP) and total protein (TP), can be useful in this discrimination. CRP, SAA, and TP were determined in 36 exudate samples (27 pleural and 9 ascitic) and in 12 transudates (9 pleural and 3 ascitic). CRP, SAA, and TP were measured. SAA present in the exudate corresponded to 10% of the amount found in serum, that is, the exudate/serum ratio (E/S) was 0.10±0.13. For comparison, the exudate/serum ratio for CRP …

Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology Of Thyroid Nodule: Diagnostic Accuracy And Pitfalls, Saeed A. Mahar, Akhtar Husain, Najmul Islam Jan 2006

Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology Of Thyroid Nodule: Diagnostic Accuracy And Pitfalls, Saeed A. Mahar, Akhtar Husain, Najmul Islam

Section of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism

Background: To evaluate the utility of FNAC in patients with Thyroid Nodule.

Methods: Records of all patients treated surgically for thyroid nodule(s) at Aga Khan University Hospital from January 2000 to December 2004 were reviewed. The patients who had pre operative FNAC as first line of the evaluation and the final post operative histopathology report available were included in the study.

Results: 125 patients (90 female 35 male) had thyroid surgery. The cytological diagnosis was made according to following categories: Benign, Follicular lesion, Malignant and Inadequate sampling. Among 63 "Benign cases", 57 were benign and 6 turned out …

Effect Of A Single Bout Of Prior Moderate Exercise On Cutaneous Perfusion In Type 2 Diabetes, Sheri R. Colberg, Henri K. Parson, Tanja Nunnold, D. Robb Holton, Aaron I. Vinik Jan 2006

Effect Of A Single Bout Of Prior Moderate Exercise On Cutaneous Perfusion In Type 2 Diabetes, Sheri R. Colberg, Henri K. Parson, Tanja Nunnold, D. Robb Holton, Aaron I. Vinik

Human Movement Sciences & Special Education Faculty Publications

In diabetic individuals, increased shunting of circulation away from the skin may exist, contributing to their greater risk for ulcerations and poor cutaneous healing. In a prospective study (1), we previously found a lower skin perfusion during local heating in the foot dorsum of sedentary type 2 diabetic individuals compared with active people without diabetes. This defect was present despite normal increases in skin interstitial nitric oxide (NO), suggesting that NO is either ineffective or not involved (2). A prior bout of maximal exercise also lessened the impaired responsiveness to local heating of the dorsal foot in active type 2 …

Additional Cardiovascular Risk Factors Associated With Excess Weigth In Children And Adolescents. The Belo Horizonte Heart Study, Paulo A. Lotufo

Paulo A Lotufo

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of overweight and obesity with physical activity, blood pressure (BP) and serum lipid profiles. METHODS Epidemiologic investigation of 1,450 students, between the ages of 6 and 18, in the city of Belo Horizonte, MG. Data: weight, height, BP, skinfold thickness, waist circumference, physical activity, total cholesterol (TC), LDL-c, HDL-c, and dietary habits. RESULTS The prevalence rates for overweight and obesity were 8.4% and 3.1%, respectively. In relation to the students in the lower quartile (Q1) of the distribution of subscapular skinfold, the students in the upper quartile (Q4) presented a 3.7 times higher risk (odds …
