SARS-CoV-2 virus emerged in the United States in early 2020 causing a pandemic of respiratory illness. While respiratory and flu-like symptoms are well-known, other cutaneous findings such as maculopapular lesions, purpura, pruritic lesions, urticaria, acral lesions and chilblain are not. As a novel virus, it is important to document any COVID-related associations, as they may serve as a diagnostic, epidemiological, or prognostic markers of disease, and fill in gaps in our current understanding of COVID. We aim to identify the types of cutaneous manifestations among patients who tested positive for COVID in the ED, and to identify which groups are …

OBJECTIVE: We aim to identify demographics, chief complaints, and comorbidities among patients who tested positive for COVID-19 in the University Medical Center New Orleans (UMCNO) ED and to identify which variables are associated with death. BACKGROUND: On March 9, 2020, the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) breached Louisiana state lines, spreading to all 64 parishes within a month with New Orleans as the epicenter. Louisiana Department of Health data reveal that Black and elderly patients are disproportionately affected by the virus. Despite these findings, it is still largely unknown what other patient characteristics are associated with COVID-19 outcomes in the Louisiana population. …

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, modified protocols for termination of resuscitation by EMS workers has impacted factors that affect out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patient survival. Demographics and clinical presentation of these patients around the country is variable. Emergency department visits have also decreased in the United States since the pandemic began, while in-home deaths have increased. There is limited data in the state of Louisiana regarding the number of OHCA deaths of patients at home and the underlying comorbidities, demographic factors, and clinical presentations of these patients. This study aims to determine if there has been an increase …

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 proved to be an impactful and deadly virus in Louisiana, just as it was around the world. Given the ability of the virus to target multiple organ systems, many patients were hospitalized for days, or even weeks as their immune and organ systems fought the virus. In addition, certain comorbidities predisposed patients to worse health outcomes when infected with COVID-19, such as hypertension and diabetes. It was vital that emergency medicine physicians considered these factors when determining whether to discharge or admit patients at University Medical Center in New Orleans (UMCNO). OBJECTIVES: Our study seeks to characterize which …
