Herpes zoster infection has been associated with a significantly increased risk of future all-cause cancer incidence. In addition, zoster infections, when involving the breast, may mimic breast malignancy, and this similar phenotype may present a diagnostic challenge for clinicians. Few cases of concurrent infection and any malignancy have been reported. We present the case of a herpes zoster infection that was associated with concurrent breast malignancy. A 62-year-old woman with a history of coronary artery disease, hypertension, and reduced ejection heart failure presented to the emergency department for a four-week history of rash of her left upper back and breast. …

Inequities in dermatologic health outcomes exist at every level of care delivery including disease prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment. Despite relatively lower incidence of skin cancer, African Americans are diagnosed at later stages with greater degrees of lymph node involvement. This has been shown to lead to disproportionate mortality when compared to lighter skinned individuals. In addition, frequently used medical education materials have a significantly smaller percentage of skin of color images as compared to lighter skin. Studies have subsequently identified greater visual diagnostic accuracy of skin conditions in lighter skin than in darker skin by U.S medical students. One …

Mineral sunscreens containing iron oxides can have dual function by providing protection from ultraviolet/ visible light and by enhancing cosmesis. These tinted sunscreens help prevent dyschromia and can mask existing discoloration. The aim of our study was to determine current sunscreen use in skin of color patients and their perception of sunscreen’s ability to prevent bothersome discoloration. We also investigated factors limiting sunscreen use in this patient population and assessed their ability to adopt these practices into their skin care regimen. The study consisted of a cross-sectional anonymous, confidential survey of 103 patients who were of Fitzpatrick IV-VI skin types. …
