Using The Motivated Information Management Theory And The Social Support Theory To Understand Caregiver Perspectives Of Currently Available Health Communication Regarding Dementia: A Qualitative Study, Sara J. Alig

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Dementia brings a cascade of changes into the life of not only the person facing it, but also the lives of the supporting family and caregivers. Dementia manifests with a gradual decline, or in some cases, a variably progressive decline in cognitive abilities. This decline requires the individual to rely more and more on caregivers. Caregiving necessitates the giving of oneself for another’s sake and oftentimes results in negative physical and social-emotional side effects. To navigate through the changes that are happening to their loved ones, as well as to themselves, caregivers need educational and social support. The purpose of …

Examining Force Level Output Of Skin-Drive Bone Conduction Hearing Devices In Adults With Simulated Conductive Hearing Loss, Rana El-Naji, Susan Scollie, Marlene P. Bagatto

Communication Sciences and Disorders Publications

Bone conduction hearing devices (BCDs) that deliver sound across the skin (i.e., transcutaneous) are suitable for some individuals who have conductive or mixed hearing losses. Prescriptive targets for percutaneous devices are available, for example, from the Desired Sensation Level–Bone Conduction Hearing Device (DSL-BCD) algorithm. These targets, however, may require modification for use with transcutaneous BCDs. The current study investigated three key variables that may inform target modification: (a) comparison of thresholds measured using an audiometric bone conduction (BC) transducer versus transcutaneous BCDs that offer in situ threshold measurement, (b) transcutaneous BCD default force level outputs versus recommended DSL percutaneous BC …

The aim of this study was to better understand how personality domains and facets were related to CI user’s quality of life, barriers to CI use, and perceived hearing ability. Twenty-six adult CI users completed an online survey which included a demographic questions and a series of questionnaires: the Cochlear Implant Use Questionnaire (CIUQ), the Cochlear Implant Quality …

Spatial Hearing In Simulated Reverberant Classroom Environments, Gabriel Seth Evan Weeldreyer May 2024

Spatial Hearing In Simulated Reverberant Classroom Environments, Gabriel Seth Evan Weeldreyer

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Spatial hearing provides access to auditory spatial cues that promote speech perception in noisy listening situations. However, reverberation degrades auditory spatial cues and limits listeners’ ability to utilize these cues for segregating target speech from competing babble. Hence, spatial unmasking—an intelligibility benefit from a spatial separation between a target and masker—is reduced in reverberant environments as compared to free field. This work tests the hypothesis that interaural decorrelation, the result of increasing reverberation, will broaden the perceived auditory source width with a cascading effect of reduced auditory spatial acuity and subsequently poorer spatial unmasking. To understand the perceptual consequences of …

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly: A Review Of Evidence-Based Practice Within Communication Sciences And Disorders, Mackenzie Morehead

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

The usage of evidence-based practice (EBP) within the field of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) is highly important. It includes three main factors: external evidence, internal evidence, and client preferences (Dollaghan, 2007). External evidence represents contributions from high quality research, internal evidence is based on clinician knowledge and experiences, and client preferences consider clients personal beliefs, fears, and goals. By combining these factors, clinicians make sound decisions within the field of CSD. The American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) endorses the need for EBP within this field (Robey, et al. 2005). This review investigated the usage of EBP across the 9 …
