Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project
Throughout this report, the following naming conventions will be used: the study area is the region of the Saint John River from Fort Kent to Ninemile Bridge and the drainage areas of all Saint John tributaries between Lincoln School and Ninemile Bridge within the United States, excluding the Allagash River drainage; the Dickey Lake Area is that region which would be inundated by the proposed Dickey Dam and the drainage areas of all rivers and streams (excluding the Saint John River) flowing into that proposed reservoir; the Lincoln School Reservoir area is that region which would be inundated by the …

Radioprotection Of Oral Cavity Structures By S-2-(3-Aminopropylamino) Ethyl Phosphorothioate (Wr-2721), Ronald King
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Studies reporting a high concentration of WR-2721 in mouse salivary glands led to our studies of possible radioprotection of these glands by this drug from ionizing radiation. Oral effects of radiation in the presence of WR-2721 were studied in mice and dogs. Histological evaluation of mouse salivary glands irradiated with 1000 rads of 60Co showed essentially no difference between control and experimental animals. Almost full regeneration of the serous salivary components occurred by 6 months in both groups and neither group had changes in the mucous glands. The use of higher doses of radiation in the mouse was prevented …

Ua35/11 Student Honors Bulletin, Vol. Iv, Wku Honors Program
WKU Archives Records
The articles, all papers done for classes in the university honors program, are divided into three groups. The first group deals with science, especially the area of health care, one of the more practical applications of science in the modern age. The second group consists of three papers done for honor courses in which the major purpose was to expose the student to new areas of consciousness and have them respond orally and verbally to what they read, creative writing. The last group deals with the humanities, literature and religion, two of the more popular fields of the humanities today. …

U.S.U And The New Toxicology, Joseph C. Street
U.S.U And The New Toxicology, Joseph C. Street
Faculty Honor Lectures
Toxicology, a branch of science once concerned only with poisons for their medical effects and legal con sequences, has undergone in recent years a metamorphosis on a major scale. The general field of toxicology is defined as the qualitative and quantitative study of the injurious effects of chemical agents, as detected by alterations of structure and function in living systems (Murphy and Hayes, 1972). In common with most other disciplines it has benefited from a growing sophistication in research methods and has particularly flourished in the wake of major advances in physiology, biochemistry and the other basic sciences that serve …

Procedures For Trace Analysis Of Dissolved Inorganic And Organic Constituents In Water, Gary D. Christian, Charles E. Matkovich, W. Lynn Schertz
Procedures For Trace Analysis Of Dissolved Inorganic And Organic Constituents In Water, Gary D. Christian, Charles E. Matkovich, W. Lynn Schertz
KWRRI Research Reports
A study of different solvent systems for the atomic absorption determination of cobalt revealed that acetone results in best sensitivity. Acetone is the solvent of choice for the sensitive measurement of several metals. Hence, methods were investigated for the separation of acetone from water by salting out so that possible solvent extraction of metal chelates into this solvent could be performed. About two-thirds saturated calcium chloride proved to be the best system for salting out of the acetone. It is essentially a neutral salt and is in general a weakly complexing salt, resulting in minimum interference in solvent extractions. Solvent …
The Chemistry Of Pesticides, Walter R. Benson
The Chemistry Of Pesticides, Walter R. Benson
Food and Drug Administration Papers
INTRODUCTION This review is limited to the structures and a few reactions of the pesticides mainly insecticides-that affect mammalian systems and that are the subject of papers by other authors in this monograph. There is no attempt to give a complete review of the chemistry of pesticides. It is intended only to show the breadth and depth of pesticide chemistry through the use of examples. With proper use of the references, and of the papers by Crosby, Freed and Montgomery, and Owens in this monograph, the reader will be able to find information for other chemicals.

Quantitative Calculation Of Gas Chromatographic Peaks In Pesticide Residue Analyses, Jean A. Gaul
Quantitative Calculation Of Gas Chromatographic Peaks In Pesticide Residue Analyses, Jean A. Gaul
Food and Drug Administration Papers
Comparison of five methods for calculating gas chromatographic peaks (disc integration, triangulation, peak height X width at half height, Rt X peak height, and peak height) shows no significant difference in the calculated results when aldrin, heptachlor epoxide, and dieldrin are injected into a gas chromatograph equipped with electron capture detector.
Problems are associated with the calculation of toxaphene, chlordane, DDT, and BHC. The author makes suggestions for calculating these four residues when present individually and in combinations with other pesticides. Use of the last four toxaphene peaks compares favorably with results obtained by using the entire toxaphene curve. …
Analysis Of Pesticide Residues By Polarography, Raymond J. Gajan
Analysis Of Pesticide Residues By Polarography, Raymond J. Gajan
Food and Drug Administration Papers
Polarography is a rapid, sensitive, and relatively specific technique that can be applied to pesticide residue analysis. The technique should also prove a valuable tool in overall pesticide research, such as monitoring new columns, studying kinetics, identifying and determining metabolites, assaying primary pesticide standards, and conducting stability studies.
