Background: Despite improvements in outcomes over time, morbidity and mortality for infants with single ventricle (SV) heart disease remains high. Among other risk factors for mortality, infants of low socioeconomic status (SES) are known to be particularly vulnerable following stage 1 palliation.

Objectives/Goal: We sought to determine whether use of a novel remote monitoring program, CHAMP (Cardiac High Acuity Monitoring Program), mitigates differences in outcomes by SES for infants with SV during the interstage period.

A less common subset of these cases includes those of which the emboli, though originating in venous vasculature, are able to pass through intracardiac defects, including a patent foramen ovale (PFO). Myopericarditis associated with COVID-19 mRNA vaccines has been recognized as an uncommon adverse reaction, especially among young, healthy adult males. Eosinophilic myocarditis is a rare form of inflammation reflecting a hypersensitivity reaction following an inciting event commonly caused by drugs including vaccines. Eosinophilic myocarditis, a subtype of myocarditis, is characterized by eosinophilic myocardial infiltrates. This paper discusses a study investigating the relationship between the cell-mediated immunity (CMI) level before cardiac transplant and the incidence of infection and mortality after the transplant. CMI is an important measure of a person's immune system. The study included 126 patients who underwent cardiac transplants between September 2011 and January 2020. Out of these, 21 patients had a low CMI level (<225), and 105 had a high CMI level (≥ 225) before transplant. The mean CMI level in the low CMI group was 175.3, while in the high CMI group, it was 479.9. The two groups were similar except for the lower white cell count and cardiac output in the CMI< 225 groups and the higher Caucasian demographic in the CMI≥ 225 groups. The study concludes that patients with lower CMI levels before cardiac transplant have a higher risk of infection (p=0.052) and mortality (p=0.005) one year after the transplant. The risk of dying for patients with CMI <225 is 12.9 times the risk of dying for patients with CMI ≥ 225 after adjusting for the other covariates in the model. However, this study has some limitations including its retrospective nature, small sample size, and single-center design. Further studies are needed to replicate these findings and investigate the optimal immunosuppressive regimens based on baseline CMI levels.

Effective control of risk factors in patients with ASCVD is important to reduce recurrent cardiovascular events. However, many ASCVD patients do not have their risk factors controlled, and this may have worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods

We retrospectively evaluated risk factor control among 24,760 ASCVD patients who had at least 1 outpatient encounter both pre-pandemic and during the first year of the pandemic. Risk factors were uncontrolled if the blood pressure (BP) ≥ 130/80 mm Hg, LDL-C ≥ 70 mg/dL, HgbA1c ≥ 7 for diabetic patients, and patients were current smokers.

Background: Severe anemia and thiamine deficiency can independently result in high output heart failure (HOHF) through different mechanisms. Data on the threshold and timeframe at which these etiologies may precipitate HOHF is unclear.

Case: A 63-year-old male with alcohol use disorder consuming 18 drinks/week presented with progressive shortness of breath and lower extremity edema for a few months. Physical exam revealed tachycardia, anasarca, jugular venous distension, Lancisi’s sign, and a midsystolic murmur. Levo-transposition of the great arteries, L-TGA, also known as congenitally corrected transposition, cc-TGA is a rare anomaly and accounts for less than 1% of all congenital heart diseases. It is characterized by both atrioventricular and ventriculoarterial discordance . It is considered a congenitally corrected transposition because the circulation is from right atrium to left ventricle leading to the pulmonary vasculature. BRASH syndrome is an acronym that stands for bradycardia, renal failure, AV node blocker, shock and hyperkalemia. The syndrome is precipitated by synergism from AV nodal blocking agents and hyperkalemia. The combination of the AV nodal blockade and renal failure leads to a cycle of severe bradycardia and hyperkalemia. This study aims to establish correlations between each of health-related risk factors and death from heart disease in each of six New Jersey counties. Each of the counties ranked by age-adjusted mortality per 100,000 from diseases of the heart. Introduction: Infectious endocarditis of the tricuspid valve is a common complication of intravenous drug use. Endocarditis caused by viridans streptococci can lead to heart valve vegetations which may be life threatening due to the potential for embolism and obstruction. Management of large valvular vegetations is often difficult due to the risks involved with open heart surgery, especially in patients with comorbid conditions. Back pain is a common chief complaint in the emergency department. With the differential ranging from musculoskeletal pain to cauda equina, there are a plethora of diagnoses. Differentiating between benign back pain and back pain that warrants further evaluation and even possible emergent surgical intervention is often a challenge in the acute setting. In this case report, a strange combination of all new symptoms including lichen planus, fevers, chills and atraumatic back pain lead to the eerie and very unexpected diagnosis of a peri-aortic abscess.
