A Pattern Matching Algorithm For Self-Adjusting Basal Rates In Insulin Pump Systems, Lauren Smith May 2024

A Pattern Matching Algorithm For Self-Adjusting Basal Rates In Insulin Pump Systems, Lauren Smith

Doctoral Dissertations

In a Type 1 Diabetic, Insulin can be administered in a pump system. There are two types of insulin that must be given: basal and bolus. Basal insulin is a long-acting form of insulin that works in the background while fasting, while Bolus insulin is rapid/short acting given in response to food to immediately begin working to lower blood sugar.

Modeling in Diabetes can be represented by algorithmic approaches ranging from simple autoregressive models of the Continuous Glucose Monitor time series to multivariate nonlinear regression techniques of machine learning. Other examples of modeling in Diabetes include prediction models of hypoglycemia …

In Vitro And In Vivo Diabetic Models For Assessment Of Tissue Engineered Vascular Grafts, Juan Carlos Carrillo Garcia Aug 2023

In Vitro And In Vivo Diabetic Models For Assessment Of Tissue Engineered Vascular Grafts, Juan Carlos Carrillo Garcia

All Dissertations

Diabetes has become one of the leading causes of lower-limb loss worldwide. Every 30 seconds, a person loses a limb due to diabetic-related vascular complications. About one-third of patients needing lower-limb bypass surgery have debilitated autologous vessels unsuitable for use, and no other good long-term options are available. These detrimental effects on the vasculature are caused mainly by the hyperglycemic and hyperlipidemic conditions derived from diabetes. Under these conditions, an increase in advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and reactive oxygen species leads to irreversible crosslinks of extracellular matrix proteins, accelerating vascular pathology through vascular stiffening, endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, atherosclerosis, fibrosis, …

Predicting Insulin Pump Therapy Settings, Riccardo L. Ferraro, David Grijalva, Alex Trahan Sep 2022

Predicting Insulin Pump Therapy Settings, Riccardo L. Ferraro, David Grijalva, Alex Trahan

SMU Data Science Review

Millions of people live with diabetes worldwide [7]. To mitigate some of the many symptoms associated with diabetes, an estimated 350,000 people in the United States rely on insulin pumps [17]. For many of these people, how effectively their insulin pump performs is the difference between sleeping through the night and a life threatening emergency treatment at a hospital. Three programmed insulin pump therapy settings governing effective insulin pump function are: Basal Rate (BR), Insulin Sensitivity Factor (ISF), and Carbohydrate Ratio (ICR). For many people using insulin pumps, these therapy settings are often not correct, given their physiological needs. While …

Midfoot And Ankle Movement Dysfunction In People With Diabetes Mellitus And Peripheral Neuropathy, Hyo Jung Jeong Jan 2021

Midfoot And Ankle Movement Dysfunction In People With Diabetes Mellitus And Peripheral Neuropathy, Hyo Jung Jeong

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

People with diabetes mellitus and peripheral neuropathy (DMPN) have midfoot and ankle musculoskeletal problems, including limited joint mobility and weakness and atrophy of foot intrinsic and calf muscles. Impaired foot structures and function could lead to midfoot and ankle movement dysfunction, measured by a heel rise task. A repeated movement dysfunction during weightbearing tasks (e.g., heel rise, walking) could cause excessive stress on the plantar tissue, which is a leading cause of plantar ulceration in people with DMPN. Understanding heel rise performance and the underlying mechanisms could help prevent the sequence of events associated with plantar ulcer development in people …

Factores Asociados A Retinopatía En Diabetes Mellitus, Angie Nicole Peñuela Suárez, Fabio Andrés Manrique, Paula Daniel Pérez Espinel, Diana Valeria Rey Rodríguez, María Camila Sotomonte Flórez Oct 2020

Factores Asociados A Retinopatía En Diabetes Mellitus, Angie Nicole Peñuela Suárez, Fabio Andrés Manrique, Paula Daniel Pérez Espinel, Diana Valeria Rey Rodríguez, María Camila Sotomonte Flórez

Effects Of Diabetes And Aging On Posture And Acceleration Thresholds During Lateral Translations, Samantha Jean Richerson Apr 2003

Effects Of Diabetes And Aging On Posture And Acceleration Thresholds During Lateral Translations, Samantha Jean Richerson

Doctoral Dissertations

Research objectives. One source of falls in the elderly may be an inability to sufficiently adjust to transient postural perturbations or slips. Identifying useful predictors of fall potential, as well as factors that affect the ability of an individual to detect a movement of the standing support surface may provide insight into postural stability and methods to increase stability in elders. To do this, acceleration thresholds to short, precise, lateral platform translations and the resultant psychophysical responses of adults with early Type 2 diabetes to age-matched controls and young adults were measured.

Methods. Using an innovative SLIP-FALLS platform, …
