An Orientation Towards Care In Occupational Therapy: A Theoretical Framework, Myah G. Beylotte
An Orientation Towards Care In Occupational Therapy: A Theoretical Framework, Myah G. Beylotte
Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies
The purpose of this paper is to explore Ethic of Care (Gilligan, 1936; Noddings, 1984) in an occupational therapy (OT) setting and to determine if empathetic and relational care can provide greater patient outcomes. Ethic of Care (EoC), originally established by Gilligan (1936), is a moral orientation towards care that has been applied in the areas of education, nursing, sports coaching, and other popular professions (Fisher et al., 2017; Gano-Overway et al., 2009; Knust & Fisher, 2015; Lachman, 2012; Newton et al., 2007; Noddings, 2005; Schools, et al., 2020), but has not been widely researched in the field of OT. …

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
I painted this picture after tearing up over the phone with her parents. "I think she's passing away," I had told them, "You'd better come up to the hospital." Inexperienced as a brand new physician, I felt like I was drowning in my responsibility over the care of my patients. Real people, with real lives, with real consequences to my decisions. It has gotten easier to feel okay while helping other humans pass away. And it sounds a little dramatic, but I've found ways to help myself cope without being stranded by the waves.

A Resident Led Newsletter Is A Powerful Communication Tool, Jonathan Brown, Zuhair Ali, An Dao, Mike Wong, Rajeev Raghavan
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Background
Communication with stakeholders for a graduate medical education (GME) program depends on shared visual and written content. Residency training programs are embracing social media as a communication channel. However, curated information that may only be viewed by subscribers or followers is difficult to archive and may appear overwhelming to novice users. An electronic, printable newsletter may be a unique communication tool for training programs to share information among residents, faculty, and hospital administration.
Methods
We published a monthly electronic newsletter sent to all residents, teaching faculty, and additional stakeholders in our internal medicine residency program. We conducted an electronic …

This research is a study of the articulation «no infection» contained in the Hadith, as it deals with the following: the verbal context, and especially the character of negation (no) which can hold the meaning of exclusion or prohibition, and exclusion is likely to banish existence and potentially deny the effect of the disease itself without God’s will. In addition, what may appear in the Hadith as a conflict or allocation. Did our Prophet- peace be upon him- want to correct pre-Islamic concepts that prevailed at the time of his mission, or is it an order to not infect others? …

Exploring Cultural, Health, And Technology Intersections: A Focus On Migrant Experiences, Merna Mina, Sahij Gill
Bridges: An Undergraduate Journal of Contemporary Connections
Despite the plethora of theories and frameworks addressing culture, health, and technology adoption, there remains a notable absence of a unifying theory that comprehensively encompasses all three aspects, particularly concerning newcomers. The Health Belief Model, for example, underscores individual perceptions and attitudes toward health yet fails to consider the intricate interplay between cultural factors and technology adoption among immigrant populations. The Healthy Immigrant Effect, which posits that immigrants often exhibit better health outcomes than native-born individuals, does not mention the role of technology on health outcomes. Acculturation theories, while shedding light on the adaptation process, often fall short of explaining …

I love to play with words and meanings, and poetry is the quintessential medium for that. Starting medical school, there's a lot of questions of what "I" want to do, and my mind just kept bringing up the image of starting a poem with "I" as the first line, making a bold mark on the page. One night, as I was thinking about the cranial nerves, I realized that the "I" doesn't just have to be an "I", and I looked for a way to represent the 2-12, too. Of course, I just had to find a way to study …

Computational Analysis Of O6-Methylated Guanine And Thioguanine Complexes, Kirsten Stinson, Michael Bowman
Computational Analysis Of O6-Methylated Guanine And Thioguanine Complexes, Kirsten Stinson, Michael Bowman
Lux et Fides: A Journal for Undergraduate Christian Scholars
DNA methylation occurring on the O6 position of guanine has been linked to the formation of cancer. DNA complexes with O6-methylated guanine have been studied experimentally, yet questions remain concerning the carcinogenic properties of O6-methylguanine. This present research explored the interaction between O6-methylguanine and its potential nucleobase pairs of cytosine and adenine in hopes of elucidating the mutagenic characteristics of O6-methylguanine. A variety of computational methods including Density Functional Theory (DFT), Symmetry Adapted Perturbation Theory (SAPT), Noncovalent Interaction (NCI) analysis, and Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analysis were employed to comprehensively probe …

Turbulence: Full Issue Download
Quill & Scope
Turbulence is an essential part of the natural world. Opposing currents churn the deep waters of the ocean, strong winds clear the air of pollutants, and powerful storms drench the earth with life-sustaining water. Yet, when we humans find ourselves experiencing turbulence, our gut reaction is often to bear down and anchor ourselves. Perhaps you, like us, have found yourself closing your eyes and tightly grasping the armrests of your airplane seat as the wings rock, or trying to keep your eyes on the horizon to prevent seasickness from taking hold in choppy waters. Anchoring ourselves allows us to maintain …

Effect Of Social Media On Shaping The Agenda Of The Communicator In The Jordanian Tv Channels, Amer Khaled Ahmad Dr, Hamza Mohammad Nahar, Maram Mohammad Naji Manajreh Dr
Middle East Journal of Communication Studies
The study aimed to assess the extent to which communicators at Jordanian television channels use social media platforms as an information source, and the impact of these platforms on their news and information selection priorities. This was achieved using a survey tool distributed on an equal quota sample of (150) communicators from Jordanian television channels (Jordan TV, AlMamlaka TV, Roya TV). The study found that all the study subjects used social media platforms as a source of information, with the "X platform (formerly Twitter)" being the most used platform. The statement "understanding the audience's interests and preferences to produce tailored …

Resonant Perceptions: Exploring Autistic Aesthetics Through Embodied Cognition, James Hutson, Piper Hutson
Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture
This study investigates the nuanced realm of aesthetic preferences among individuals with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) compared to neurotypical individuals, addressing a significant gap in understanding the diverse perceptual experiences within the neurodiverse community. The impetus for this study stems from the growing recognition of neurodiversity and the need to appreciate how individuals with ASC uniquely experience and interpret their environment, particularly in the context of aesthetics. Employing a dual-method approach, the research integrates data from comprehensive surveys and in-depth interviews to construct a comparative analysis of aesthetic preferences and experiences. Participants encompassed a broad demographic spectrum, ensuring a diverse …

Rapid Increase Of Female But Not Male Obesity: Analysis Of The 2023 Vanuatu Health Transition Project Survey On Aneityum, Matthew Christian, Olivia Lasalle, Zhiqiao Huang, Hannah Chen, Ricky Chen, J. Koji Lum
Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal
Globally, obesity rates are continuing to increase and countries in the midst of modernization are most vulnerable. Developing nations are undergoing a health transition alongside rapid economic modernization. The nation of Vanuatu, like other Pacific island countries, is experiencing such a transition marked by decreased cases of infectious disease and increased incidence of chronic and non-communicable diseases. Aneityum is a small and sparsely populated island in Vanuatu and is behind more developed islands in its transition. This present study is the latest in a multi-year project examining health in Vanuatu as it undergoes a health transition with an increased prevalence …

A Proposal: Healing Impacts Of Writing Groups On Cancer Survivors, Cassandra M. Normand
Journal of Creative Writing Studies
Those diagnosed with cancer not only suffer from the disease itself, but also psychological distress, including feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, and depression. Writing groups have been found to positively impact attendees’ well-being, including decreasing anxiety, depression, and other psychological symptoms. Despite the benefits of writing groups, little research examines the impact of cancer survivors attending writing groups. This study utilized previous literature to create a curriculum for a writing group specifically for cancer survivors. This curriculum was then pilot tested with a group of cancer survivors in May and June of 2022. Psychological symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress were …

A Narrative Medicine curriculum is now generally part of medical education to promote capacities for reflection, observation, engagement, and empathy. The impact of this curriculum is furthered when students are given specific arts training in a limited, but focused, way. This paper details the approach of an intensive poetry reading and craft course embedded in a broader Narrative Medicine curriculum

A Responsible Parrhesia? A Review Of The Price Of Secrecy, Sara Tafakori
A Responsible Parrhesia? A Review Of The Price Of Secrecy, Sara Tafakori
RadioDoc Review
The Price of Secrecy immerses the listener in stories of individual trauma, of child abuse and rape, yet also draws lessons from them of wider social significance. It includes moments of narrative catharsis, interspersed with repeated reminders that the stories are unfinished and open-ended—that the solutions lie out there, in social action, rather than in the stories themselves. The series also gestures towards structural critique, especially of ‘the legal constraints’ it identifies, yet it places greater importance on changing the wider culture through challenging the culture of secrecy and shame around victims’ stories of rape and abuse. This centrally means …

Exploring The Experience Of Healthcare-Related Epistemic Injustice Among People With Myalgic Encephalomyelitis / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Joanne Hunt, Jessica Runacres, Daniel Herron, David Sheffield
The Qualitative Report
Myalgic encephalomyelitis / chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a chronic, disabling yet clinically “contested” condition, previously theorised through a lens of epistemic injustice. Phenomena conceptually close to epistemic injustice, including stigma, are known to have deleterious consequences on a person’s health and life-world. Yet, no known primary studies have explored how people with ME/CFS experience healthcare through a lens of epistemic injustice, whilst a dearth of research explicitly exploring healthcare-related injustice from a patient perspective has been noted. This qualitative study seeks to address this gap. Semi-structured interviews and interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) were used to explore the experiences of …
