BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing

Governance entities that have tackled public participation for decades are now approaching more participatory democracies, throughout which citizens are directly involved in influencing decisions that matter to them. In Lebanon, young people’s disengagement from the sociopolitical realm demands a framework for youth dialogue on policy matters. In 2017, the Hariri Foundation for Sustainable Human Development designed, initiated and managed a youth-centered public participation approach in Saida, Lebanon, engaging young citizens in local research and development and empowering them to multiply their influences at the regional and national scales. This approach has been recognized on all levels as an effective methodology …

The Impact Of The Media On Body Image Perceptionsand Self-Esteem Among Female University Students, Gamal Megahed Assistant Professor, Mass Communication Department, Faculty Of Human Sciences

BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing

University students nowadays face a number of daily challenges. To meet the standards set by the media and other socio-economic influences causes many of them to feel vulnerable and confused. This sense of failure and the decrease in self-esteem often lead students to focus on their personal image, which in turn causes them to seek physical and mental changes. To adapt to a new environment, it is therefore essential to understand what affects an individual in their daily life, as this determines their response to this new environment. In most countries, it is the mothers, female friends and the media …

BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing

The most global energy that directly related to building sector is the amount of energy consumption in the heating, and air-conditioning. One of the best ways that that enhances the reduction of this energy consumption and maintains the best comfort zone to the occupant is using a phase change material (PCM) with under floor heating/cooling system. In the present work, a new theoretical study involving comparative investigation among different PCMs on the energy consumption of under floor heating system has been performed. The most used organic and inorganic PCMs complete with their specified thermos-physical properties with the melting temperature as …

Metformin is one of the most widely prescribed oral ant diabetic drugs, it is generally used for treating type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. The organic caution transporter 1(OCT1), encoded by the SLC22A1 gene is responsible for the uptake of metformin in the hepatocytes. Polymorphisms in SLC22A1 gene contribute to variable responses to metformin leading to inter-individual variations in its clinical efficacy. We evaluated the impact of SLC22A1 rs622342 gene polymorphisms on the efficacy of metformin in Lebanese type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. A total of 63 patients who were on metformin monotherapy were followed up for 6 months. Single nucleotide …

The infiltration of immuno-inflammatory cells is one of the earliest and durable steps that lead to atherosclerosis. These cells produce many immune components that act as a double-edged sword in this inflammatory disease. Among these components, we note antimicrobial peptides, including defenses. Defenses are natural cationic peptides of the innate immune system. In Humans, these small peptides have a large antimicrobial spectrum. In addition, they play an important role in both infectious and inflammatory diseases. Our objective was to study the relation between alpha-defenses (DEFA) 1-3 genes expression and cardiovascular risk factors. This objective was built on the hypothesis that …

The Impact Of Indoor Environment Quality On Theconservation Practice Of Historical Buildingthecase Of Lebanese Coastal Zone, Hoda Zeayter, Ibtihal Y. El-Bastawissi, Hiba Mohsen

BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing

It is widely acknowledged that a multidisciplinary approach should be adopted to conserve historical buildings that include indoor environmental features. This paper discusses the effect of healthier indoor environment requirements on the conservation of historical buildings. Conservation, being an essential sustainable practice using inherited built assets to satisfy present needs, imposes limitations on the intervention that can be induced to historical buildings. Healthier indoor environment requires controlling various factors as Indoor Air Quality and Thermal Comfort, which directly affect the Heat-Air- Moisture transfer (hygrothermal behavior) of the historic building envelope and may lead to its deterioration and degradation. Focusing on …
