Laser etching of enamel surfaces alters the physical and chemical characteristics of the enamel. These changes in characteristics enhance the bonding to enamel. The purpose of this study was to compare the shear and tensile bond strength of Er,Cr:YSGG hydrokinetic laser system (Biolase) with 37% phosphoric acid and self etching primer 30 minutes and 72 hours after bonding. Four different laser power output setting was observed: 1.5W, 2.0W, 2.5W, and 3.0W. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and predict the expected changes that occur in the nasal cavity volume following rapid palatal expansion. Eighteen subjects (11 female, 7 male), ages 9 to 18, requiring rapid palatal expansion in conjunction with comprehensive orthodontic treatment, were selected for the study. Rapid palatal expansion was accomplished using the standard, banded hyrax appliance. Three-dimensional cone beam computed tomograms using the NewTom 9000™ were acquired before and after expansion. Serial coronal slices of the nasal cavity were made using the QV9000™ software program. The resultant serial images were imported into 3-D Doctor™ for analysis …

Midazolam And Thiopentone Co-Induction: Looking For Improvement In Quality Of Anaesthesia, M A. Khan, F A. Khan

Objective: To evaluate improvement in quality of anaesthesia induction using thiopentone and midazolam for co-induction of anaesthesia. An additional end point was taken as loss of response to a tetanic stimulation (50 Hz) delivered for 5 seconds after the loss of verbal contact and eyelash reflex.Methods: Ninety ASA I and II patients, within the age range of 20-60 years were studied. Patients were randomly divided into three equal groups; A, B and group C.Results: Onset of induction and loss of response to a tetanic stimulation was achieved earlier in group B as compared to the other study groups (p < 0.05).CONCLUSION: Co-induction with midazolam 0.02 mg x kg(-1) followed by thiopentone 3 mg x kg(-1) was superior to other two groups. Induction of anaesthesia in this group was found to be smoother and faster, provided better hemodynamic stability, better airway maintenance and with lesser incidence of untoward effects.

The radiodensity of a composite resin can greatly influence a clinician's ability to analyze a restoration for failure. The purpose of this study was to determine the relative radiopacities of 29 resin restorative materials compared to enamel, and to verify the comparable radiopacity between shades of 23 of the restorative composite resin materials. Composite resin discs measuring >5mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness were made and polymerized. Mandibular advancement is performed in patients routinely by traditional bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) or less commonly by distraction osteogenesis (DO). The influence of mandibular advancement on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is well recognized but not fully explored. This study involved the direct measurement of synovial fluid hydrostatic pressure (SFHP) in the TMJ after mandibular advancement by either BSSO or DO in two male mature minipigs, Sus scrofa. Objectives: To detect the prevalence of IgA nephropathy in Pakistani patients, as no significant published data from this part of the developing world is available in the international literature for reference.

Method: The study was conducted in a university hospital on 105 consecutive renal biopsy specimens. Direct immunofluorescence microscopy was performed using antibodies specific for the heavy chains of IgG, IgA, IgM, C3 and fibrinogen.

Background: Split transfers of the tibialis anterior and posterior tendons are commonly performed to address hindfoot varus deformities in patients with cerebral palsy, stroke, or brain injury. Poor outcomes from these procedures are often attributed to a failure to tension the transferred tendon properly, but the mechanical effects of this aspect of the procedure have not been quantified, to our knowledge. This report documents a computer model of intracranial pressure (ICP) dynamics that is used to evaluate clinical treatment options for elevated ICP during traumatic brain injury (TBI). The model uses fluid volumes as primary state variables and explicitly models fluid flows as well as the resistance, compliance, and pressure associated with each of the compartments (arteries and arterioles, capillary bed, veins, venous sinus, ventricles, and brain parenchyma). La atrofia ocular es una complicación de hipotonía ocular prolongada, trauma ocular severo, inflamación intraocular y glaucoma absoluto. Cuando presenta desorganización de las estructuras intraoculares, engrosamiento escleral posterior, catarata, hemorragias, proliferaciones gliales y calcificaciones intraoculares, se denomina Ptisis bulbi. Los episodios de hemorragia recurrente o inflamaciones asociados pueden ocasionar dolores severos que ameriten enucleación o evisceración.

La unidad de Optometría Funcional‐ Patología realizo 1.575 consultas de adultos de primera vez en el año 2000, correspondientes al 36% del total de las consultas del Instituto de Investigaciones Optométricas. Se determino el perfil epidemiológico de patologías oculares por edad y genero ajustados a CIE 10 (Clasificación Internacional de Enfermedades). Se encontró una población joven con un 54% de mujeres. Los diagnostico más frecuentes fueron en su orden: pinguecula, blefaritis seborreica, pterigio, catarata senil, conjuntivitis alérgica, melanosis conjuntival, nevus conjuntival, conjuntivitis bacteriana, meibomianitis y queratocono. Las deficiencias visuales en los escolares, pueden implicar problemas en el aprendizaje y retardo en el desarrollo psicosocial. Debido a la poca información sobre esta problemática en el Distrito, se realizo este estudio de tipo descriptivo, con el objeto de determinar la prevalencia de alteraciones oculares‐visuales, en una muestra de 1.250 niños de 5 a 14 años de establecimientos oficiales y privados en Bogotá. El 42% de los niños escolares presento algún grado de deficiencia en la AV (20/25 o menor). De deficiencia disminuye a medida que aumenta la edad. Describe el estado refractivo en niños menores de un año de edad. Los niños examinados proceden de la población pediátrica del hospital de Tunjuelito‐ Clínica El Carmen, que asisten al “Programa de Crecimiento y Desarrollo”. La refracción fue determinada mediante la técnica de retinoscopia dinámica. Los estados refractivos encontrados más comúnmente fueron: Astigmatismo (77.5% OD, 73.5 OI: con la regla 100% OD 97.4% OI) del tipo hipermétrope compuesto y mixto. En esta investigación fueron evaluados 286 pacientes con patología infecciosa del segmento anterior y mediante estudio microbiológico se identificaron las bacterias asociadas con la infección. En 286 cultivos bacteriológicos realizados se obtuvieron 177 aislamientos, encontrándose un 73.45% de flora gran positiva siendo las especies más frecuentes S. Epidermidis 48.46%, S. Aureus (35.38%), S.Pneumoniae (4.61%) y Corynebacterium SP. (2.31%). El 26.55% correspondía a bacilos gran negativos de los cuales el 74.47% son enterobacterias y el 25.53% microorganismos no fermentados. El mayor porcentaje de aislamientos fue realizado en pacientes con conjuntivitis bacteriana, blefaritis bacteriana, conjuntivitis inespecífica y blefaritis inespecífica.

Background Collaboration between physicians and pharmacists is one approach to address drug-related morbidity and achieve therapeutic goals. A collaborative practice of pharmaceutical care has been used in the Fairview Clinics System of Minneapolis-St Paul since 1999.

Methods The quality of therapeutic determinations made by pharmacists within this collaborative practice of pharmaceutical care was studied by a 12-member panel of physicians and pharmacists who used randomly selected patient records.
