As a result of the offsetting effect of a rise in productivity and decline in harvested area, the world sorghum production (tonnes) has been on a horizontal trend. The combined effect of a decline in area harvested and a rise in yield productivity have resulted in an overall increase in world millet production (tonnes) trend.

During the last three decades, significant numbers of breeding lines, parental stocks, germplasm and cultivars have been released through INTSORMIL/host countries collaboration around the world. Los ensayos uniformes de sorgo del PCCMCA, son el medio regionalizado para evaluar y seleccionar los mejores sorgos híbridos comerciales y pre-comerciales de las empresas productoras de semillas y programas nacionales de la región. Esta actividad ha sido la base para que los agricultores reciban las mejores semillas que les aseguren buena rentabilidad y estabilidad del cultivo. The Sorghum, Millet and Other Grains CRSP (INTSORMIL) is funded by the United States Agency for International Development and collaborating organizations in the U.S and in host countries. The Global INTSORMIL program involves 17 U.S. scientists at six universities and the USDA and 23 host country national research programs. The INTSORMIL mission is to use collaborative research to overcome constraints to sorghum, millet and other grains (fonio, tef and finger millet) production and utilization for the mutual benefit of agriculture in the U.S. and developing countries.
