Methods To Hasten Zoysiagrass Establishment From Sprigs, Tyler Carr May 2023

Methods To Hasten Zoysiagrass Establishment From Sprigs, Tyler Carr

Doctoral Dissertations

Zoysiagrasses (Zoysia spp. Willd.) are commonly used on golf course fairways and tees in addition to residential and commercial lawns due to lower input requirements relative to bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.). This has led to increased interest in using zoysiagrass for golf course putting greens; however, zoysiagrass establishment from sprigs is prolonged compared to bermudagrass. A series of experiments were conducted in glasshouses in Knoxville, TN in 2022 to evaluate the effects of environmental conditions and management practices on the establishment of Prizm zoysiagrass from sprigs. To determine the optimal soil temperature for Prizm zoysiagrass establishment, sprigs were exposed …

Poa Annua: An Annual Species?, Devon E. Carroll May 2022

Poa Annua: An Annual Species?, Devon E. Carroll

Doctoral Dissertations

Poa annua L. is ranked the most troublesome turfgrass weed but can also be a highly desirable turfgrass species. As the Latin name annua implies, the species is thought to persist via an annual life cycle; yet there are many reports in literature of P. annua persisting perennially. Considering that P. annua senescence patterns do not align with other true annual species such as Triticum spp. and Zea mays L., we hypothesized that P. annua presents itself similarly to other perennial, cool-season, turfgrass species that are subject to a confluence of environmental factors in summer that can cause mortality. …

Evaluation Of Off-Type Grasses In Interspecific Hybrid Bermudagrass [Cynodon Dactylon (L.) Pers. X C. Transvaalensis Burtt-Davy] Putting Greens, Eric Hall Reasor May 2017

Evaluation Of Off-Type Grasses In Interspecific Hybrid Bermudagrass [Cynodon Dactylon (L.) Pers. X C. Transvaalensis Burtt-Davy] Putting Greens, Eric Hall Reasor

Doctoral Dissertations

The economic impact of the golf industry in the United States (U.S.) in 2011 was estimated to be $176.8 billion. Interspecific hybrid bermudagrasses [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. x C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy] are some of the most widely utilized grasses on golf courses throughout tropical, subtropical, and temperate climates. In 2007, bermudagrass was grown on 80% of putting green acreage in the southern U.S. ‘Tifgreen’ and ‘Tifdwarf’ were two of the first widely established cultivars on putting greens, but their genetic instability led to the occurrence of phenotypically different off-type (OT) grasses. Several OT grasses were selected and released as …

Alternative Strategies For Weed Control In Creeping Bentgrass, Matthew Thomas Elmore Aug 2014

Alternative Strategies For Weed Control In Creeping Bentgrass, Matthew Thomas Elmore

Doctoral Dissertations

Creeping bentgrass (CBG) (Agrostis stolonifera L.) is the most widely used cool-season turfgrass species on golf course fairways and tees in the United States, but it is tolerant of few post-emergence herbicides. Commercial herbicide development is currently focused on providing superintendents with herbicides that pose minimal environmental impact and can be used effectively at lower application rates than older alternatives. However, few of these products are safe for use on CBG. Several projects were conducted to evaluate alternative strategies to increase CBG herbicide tolerance.

Plants naturally contain enzymatic systems that metabolize xenobiotics. The interspecies variability in these enzymes is …

Impacts Of Preemergence Herbicides On Hybrid Bermudagrass Morphology, Patrick Alan Jones May 2013

Impacts Of Preemergence Herbicides On Hybrid Bermudagrass Morphology, Patrick Alan Jones

Masters Theses

Preemergence (PRE) herbicides were evaluated in multiple experiments to determine their impacts on hybrid bermudagrass morphology [(C. dactolyn (L.) Pers. x C. transvaalensis (Burtt Davy)]. First, indaziflam and prodiamine were applied to hybrid bermudagrass rooted to various depths in either sand or silt loam mini-rhizotrons. Results indicated that prodiamine (a mitiotic inhibitor) and indaziflam (a cellulose biosynthesis inhibitor) both significantly reduced root length density compared to a non-treated control; however, indaziflam treated plants exhibited foliar injury (i.e., reddening, necrosis) while those treated with prodiamine did not.

The researchers surmised that reductions in root length density with indaziflam may compromise …

Integrated Strategies For Controlling Warm-Season Turfgrass Weeds, Matthew Thomas Elmore Dec 2011

Integrated Strategies For Controlling Warm-Season Turfgrass Weeds, Matthew Thomas Elmore

Masters Theses

Herbicidal inhibitors of 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) such as mesotrione, topramezone and tembotrione were evaluated in greenhouse experiments for activity against bermudagrass. While topramezone and tembotrione exhibited greater activity than mesotrione, none of these herbicides provided acceptable bermudagrass control. These herbicides reduced leaf tissue chlorophyll and carotenoid pigment concentrations in bermudagrass. Changes in turfgrass pigmentation were quantified using HPLC analogy as well as evaluations of visual bleaching and measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence yield (Fv/Fm). Results indicated that these more expeditious methods of evaluating HPPD-inhibiting herbicide activity (visual evaluations and Fv/Fm) cannot be used …

Effects Of Trinexapac-Ethyl And Winter Overseeding On The Morphological Characteristics And Traffic Tolerance Of Bermudagrass Cultivars, William D. Haselbauer May 2010

Effects Of Trinexapac-Ethyl And Winter Overseeding On The Morphological Characteristics And Traffic Tolerance Of Bermudagrass Cultivars, William D. Haselbauer

Masters Theses

Common bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] and hybrid bermudagrass [C. dactylon (L.) Pers. X C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy] are some of the most common turfgrasses used on athletic fields. Subsequently, the traffic tolerance of commercially available cultivars and the effects of trinexapac-ethyl (TE) on bermudagrass athletic fields with or without perennial ryegrass are often limited. A two year study at the University of Tennessee was conducted under simulated athletic field traffic to evaluate the performance of bermudagrass cultivars as affected by TE and overseeding. Bermudagrass cultivars evaluated were Tifway, Riviera, Patriot, and Celebration. TE treatments consisted of an untreated …
