There has been growing interest among nations in the western hemisphere in preferential trading arrangements (Taylor et al., 1995; Schuh and Junguita, 1993). Since 1990, 33 regional agreements have been registered with the World Trade Organization — the supranational organization that sets the rules for international trade (Blandford, 1995). One of the most important of these trading arrangements is the Mercado Comun del Sur (Common Market of the South), commonly referred to by its acronym, the MERCOSUR. (See Table 1 for a definition of acronyms and technical terms.) The MERCOSUR is a customs union whose member nations are Argentina, Brazil, …

Pricing of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) has been determined primarily by fiber length and grade, which were manually determined. Implementation of the high volume instrument (HVI) cotton classing system in 1991 allowed other fiber quality parameters to be objectively and rapidly measured (Deussen, 1989). One quality parameter added to the pricing structure by the advent of HVI in determining the value of ginned lint is fiber strength (Table 1). Open-end spinning, a new technology being utilized by the textile industry, requires high-strength cotton fibers (>25 g/tex) for manufacture of yarns. As this technology becomes more widely used, cotton with …
Prediction Of Potential Antimigraine Activity Using Artificial Neural Networks, Qing Luo, Jerry A. Darsey, Cesar M. Compadre, Sanjay K. Mitra
Prediction Of Potential Antimigraine Activity Using Artificial Neural Networks, Qing Luo, Jerry A. Darsey, Cesar M. Compadre, Sanjay K. Mitra
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
More than 10 million Americans, three quarters of them women, suffer some degree of recurrent migraine headaches. Feverfew [Tanacetum parthenium (L.) Schultz-Bip.) is a member of the Asteraceae family that is native to Europe. This plant is a perennial flowering aromatic plant common in gardens. It has been widely used as a self-medication of arthritis, fever, and migraine headaches for over 2000 years. Sesquiterpene lactones (SL) are the components responsible for the antimigraine activity of feverfew. In this research, the relationship between SL structural information and their biological activity was studied by using Gaussian 92 program in conjunction with artificial …

Effect Of Media Constituents On In Vitro Culturing Of Cowpea (Vigna Unguiculata) Shoot Tip And Leaf Disk Explants, Mohanjeet S. Brar, Edwin J. Anderson, Teddy E. Morelock, Ronald W. Mcnew
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Cowpea is an important legume food crop that is commonly grown in Arkansas and numerous other southern states. The application of biotechnological approaches for the improvement of U.S. cowpea genotypes is currently not possible due to the lack of a regeneration and transformation system. Therefore, the first priority of our research efforts is the development of a plant regeneration system that will facilitate plant transformation studies. In an effort to optimize the media requirements for tissue culturing cowpea, we evaluated the in vitro response of shoot tip and leaf disk explants to various levels of Murashige and Skoog (MS) macro …
Floristic Survey And Annotated Checklist Of The Pine Bluff Arsenal, Stephen A. Walker, Julian Campbell
Floristic Survey And Annotated Checklist Of The Pine Bluff Arsenal, Stephen A. Walker, Julian Campbell
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
We conducted a floristic survey of the Pine Bluff Arsenal during the spring, summer, and fall of 1996. In total, 622 taxa representing 113 families and 351 genera were identified and compiled into an annotated checklist. The largest families were Asteraceae (79 genera), Poaceae (73 genera). Fabaceae (41 genera), and Cyperaceae (38 genera). Exotic species composed only 8.5% of the flora. Fifty-five of the specimens represent new records for Jefferson County.

Factors Affecting Transformation Efficiency Of Poplar Hybrid Line Nc5331 By Agrobacterium Tumefaciens, Xin Y. Li, Feng H. Huang, Edward E. Gbur Jr.
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Acetosyringone, pH, and glucose, which may affect Agrobacterium-mediated gene transformation to poplar hybrid line NC5331, were investigated in an attempt to raise the gene transfer efficiency. The Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain used harbored disarmed vector (pMON9749) carrying a bet-glucuronidase gene and a kanamycin resistant marker. With the addition of acetosyringone at 25 to 75 MuM, the transformation efficiency was significantly enhanced, but dependent on pH. Acetosyringone required a pH above 5.8 to achieve an efficient gene transfer and failed to enhance the transformation at lower pH. However, with addition of both acetosyringone and glucose, the transformation was not affected by pH. …
