Strawberry Root And Crown Rot Disease Survey 2005 And 2006 Seasons, Dennis Phillips, Hossein Golzar Aug 2008

Strawberry Root And Crown Rot Disease Survey 2005 And 2006 Seasons, Dennis Phillips, Hossein Golzar

Bulletins 4000 -

Reports of unusually high numbers of plant deaths in strawberry crops from growers in Western Australia prompted a survey to identify the cause. Plant and soil samples were taken from a range of growers and runner sources over a two-year period and tested for plant pathogens.

Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae was identified as the predominant pathogen, the first recording of this in Western Australia. Further work is planned to clarify the epidemiology of this pathogen and evaluate suitable methods of control. Patches

Compost Production And Use In Horticulture, Bob Paulin, Peter O'Malley Jul 2008

Compost Production And Use In Horticulture, Bob Paulin, Peter O'Malley

Bulletins 4000 -

Maintaining and improving soil organic carbon levels is becoming an increasingly important aspect of modern farming. Compost provides potentially one of the most effective ways of applying organic matter to soils and improving organic carbon levels.

Improving soil organic carbon is directly related to soil quality and performance. Increased quality reflects improved biological function (soil health), fertility and physical attributes that include better drainage, reduced compaction and erosion, and improved moisture-holding capability, at least for lighter soils.

Compost is not the only option available. Others include the use of cover or break crops, reducing the use of cultivations, selecting safe …

Western Australian Rangeland Monitoring System For Grasslands: Field Manual, Andrew Craig, Philip Thomas Jun 2008

Western Australian Rangeland Monitoring System For Grasslands: Field Manual, Andrew Craig, Philip Thomas

Bulletins 4000 -

Western Australian Rangeland Monitoring System (WARMS) sites are designed to provide defined areas for repeated photography and collection of vegetation composition, shrub/tree cover and landscape function (soil surface assessment) data. This manual defines the procedures for installing and monitoring WARMS sites in the grasslands of northern Western Australia. It provides a documented reference of site stratification at regional scale, and site allocation at station (property) scale. Different procedures apply for sites in the shrublands of the southern pastoral zone. WARMS is designed to be interpreted at the vegetation type or regional scale, rather than lease (station) scale. Information gathered is …

Root Disease Under Intensive Cereal Production Systems, Bill Macleod, Vivien Vanstone, Ravjit Khangura, Ciara Beard May 2008

Root Disease Under Intensive Cereal Production Systems, Bill Macleod, Vivien Vanstone, Ravjit Khangura, Ciara Beard

Bulletins 4000 -

This Bulletin describes symptoms and control methods for the most commonly encountered cereal root diseases in Western Australia:

  • rhizoctonia bare patch
  • root lesion nematode
  • take-all
  • fusarium crown rot
  • cereal cyst nematode
  • common root rot
  • pythium root rot

Diseases caused by pathogenic micro-organisms can significantly reduce the yield of cereals. Some of these diseases are uncommon while others occur over a large area of the Western Australian wheatbelt every year. The most prevalent root diseases of cereals in Western Australia are rhizoctonia bare patch, root lesion nematode and take-all. Less widespread are fusarium crown rot, cereal cyst nematode, common root rot …

Greenhouse Roses For Cutflower Production, Aileen Reid Apr 2008

Greenhouse Roses For Cutflower Production, Aileen Reid

Bulletins 4000 -

Roses can be one of the more profitable flower crops to grow, but also one of the most difficult. Intensive, on-going management is necessary to obtain quality flowers.

The number of rose growers in Western Australia has declined. Many older growers have retired and are not being replaced by newer growers. Increasing competition from imports means that operations need to be highly efficient and it is increasingly difficult for small enterprises to survive. The high capital cost of installing and operating heating for winter production, in combination with cheaper imports from areas with warm winter climates and low labour costs …

Southern Weeds And Their Control, John Moore, Judy Wheeler

Bulletins 4000 -

This booklet provides easy identification of common weeds and methods of control using common cultural, biological and herbicidal control techniques. The weeds are divided into four colour coded groups based on their lifeform and are grasses, herbs, vines and shrubs or trees. Within each group, the weeds are listed alphabetically by their Latin name. A brief description of the herbicides used, a glossary and an index are included. Some species have been combined where they have similar control methods like the perennial grasses and Brassica weeds.

Pastoral Profits Guide, A Paddock Guide To Achieving Sustainable Livestock Productivity, Mark Alchin, Jim Addison, Valarie Shrubb, Zac Cockerill, Matthew Young, Tim Johnson, Greg Brennan

Most pastoralists appreciate the need to deliver an economic, environmental and social 'profit' from their business. Achieving these profits can be a real challenge given the comparatively low productive potential and the substantial seasonal variation in the WA Southern Rangelands region. This guide was written to assist pastoralists to meet their specific livestock production, financial and range condition objectives through the better alignment of feed demand (stocking rate) to feed supply (carrying capacity). We provide nine basic steps that simplify the process of managing the feed supply, equipping pastoralists with the tools to make· decisions and to critically assess the …
