Economics Of Summer Weed Control., T. Piper
Economics Of Summer Weed Control., T. Piper
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Aims: To test various chemical options for summer weed control; measuring their efficacy, the amount of soil moisture conserved, and follow-up crop yield. A full season cost-benefit could then be produced. Summer rains were widespread in 1990, and summer weed sites were plentiful.
Trial 90A3
Location: Avondale.
This site had adequate moisture for most of the summer. Weeds were growing well when sprayed, and were readily controlled. (df. Wongan Hills). 2,4-D/diuron gave excellent control at the time of spraying but follow-up germinations marred the result.
Trial 90M6
Location: Merredin.
All treatments have failed at this site. Large doublegee and melons …
Monitoring Western Australia's Rangelands, Ron Hacker, David Beurle, George Gardiner
Monitoring Western Australia's Rangelands, Ron Hacker, David Beurle, George Gardiner
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Rangelands, native pastures used for grazing domestic livestock, occupy about 100 million hectares or 40 per cent of Western Australia, extending from the tropical grasslands of the Kimberley to the arid shrub steppe of the Nullarbor Plain.
The rangelands are characterized by highly variable seasonal conditions. Carrying capacity can fluctuate dramatically from year to year. Grazing management requires a tactical approach from one season to the next because of the great variation in the capacity of the land to support stock.
Rangeland monitoring provides pastoralists with objective information on these changes to assist their management decision making. The Western Australian …

To design the best control to reduce quickly the anticipated large seed population of brome grass in the soil.
To determine whether the persistence of brome grass is related more to survivors shedding seeds …

Trial 90ME86
This trial was one of the best demonstrations of pursuits effectiveness against mustard in particular. Other weeds were rough poppy and ryegrass and a small amount of cereal and doublegee.
250 ml applied immediate before seeding (IBS) was by far the best treatment with 100% control of mustard and poppy and good ryegrass control. This is in contract to 375 ml most emergent which had good control of mustard (77%) and suppression of ryegrass. There was no yield advantage from the post emergent treatment but there was a 55% yield increase from …

Trial 90C49
Grass and broad leaved weed control in direct sown crops.
Location: Chapman Valley Research Station.
The low rate of sprayseed with diuron was not as effective on the grasses. It may indicate some antagonism within the mix as the same rate of sprayseed with metribuzin did not cause any drop in grass control. The addition of 2, 4-D amine may have boosted the mixes activity on capeweed as the sprayseed metribuzin mix was not very good on capeweed.

Biological Control Of Doublegee, Dane Panetta
Biological Control Of Doublegee, Dane Panetta
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Doublegee (Emex australis) is one of the worst agricultural weeds in Western Australia. To date, however, biological control of this weed has proved elusive. Multiple releases of two weevils which attack doublegee have not led to insect establishment. For one of these species, further research has shown that doublegee control would probably not be achieved in the wheatbelt even if insect establishment were enhanced by growing its host during the summer months. A joint Western Australian Department of Agriculture/ CSIRO project is investigating the virulence and host specificity of an undescribed South African species o/Phomopsis fungus. Should this pathogen prove …

Response By Stylosanthes Hamata And S. Scabra To Phosphate On Three Soils In The North-Kimberley Of Western Australia, A Mcr Holm, Mario F. D'Antuono
Resource management technical reports
Legume herbage mass was maximized after two or three years application of 50 kg/ha double superphosphate for both Verano and Fitzroy on Red earth soils and for Fitzroy on Yellow lateritic soils. There was increased production of Verano up to the maximum fertilizer level. Both varieties responded in the second year to residual P following application in the first year but there were no responses in subsequent years.
