Effects Of Different Additives On Silage Quality Of Napiergrass, Y. K. Cheng, C. S. Chen, P. W. Peng

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Objectives of this experiment were to determine the effects of different additives on silage quality of napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum). The cultivar of TLG2 with high water soluble carbohydrates was used to making silages added with or without 5 and 10% corn meal or wheat bran, and then treated with or without enzyme. Crude protein, acid detergent fiber, neutral detergent fiber, water soluble carbohydrates and volatile fatty acid contents of silage were determined to evaluate silage quality. From the results, it showed that var.TLG2 could be making good silages without any additives but the dry matter was low. Adding …

The Effect Of Browse Species When Fed As A Supplement To Low Quality Native Grass Hay On Animal Performance, A. Elgersma, J. F. Oerlemans, D. B. Coates Nov 2021

The Effect Of Browse Species When Fed As A Supplement To Low Quality Native Grass Hay On Animal Performance, A. Elgersma, J. F. Oerlemans, D. B. Coates

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

A pen trial was conducted to measure the impact of some browse species when fed as a supplement on the nitrogen (N) and dry matter intake of cattle receiving low quality native grass hay. There were 8 treatments consisting of a nil-supplement control treatment, a urea supplement control, a green oaten hay control and 5 treatment groups based on browse supplements (Albizia lebbeck, Carissa spp. and Bursaria spp.). Treatment effect on increased native pasture intake was related to the amount of supplementary nitrogen (N), such that there was a significant linear relationship between dry matter intake of native …

Yellow-Flowered Lucerne (Medicago Falcata L.) - A Potential Forage Legume For The North, T. Mela, H. Ihamäki, M. Matilainen Nov 2021

Yellow-Flowered Lucerne (Medicago Falcata L.) - A Potential Forage Legume For The North, T. Mela, H. Ihamäki, M. Matilainen

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The suitability of yellow-flowered lucerne (Medicago falcata L.) for forage production under the northern conditions was studied in a mixture sward with timothy (Phleum pratense L.) in field trials in South Finland for four years from 1995 to 1998. Through the first three winters lucerne stayed unharmed. In June and July lucerne grew vigorously, but in August little. The total seasonal yields were highest in the second and the third year of harvesting, up to 10 t DM ha-1. In the winter 1997-1998 , winter damages killed 21 to 38 % of lucerne plants, and resulted …

Intake And Qualitative Aspects Of Guinea Grass Grazed By Sheep Over Three Different Seasons, Willem A. Van Niekerk Nov 2021

Intake And Qualitative Aspects Of Guinea Grass Grazed By Sheep Over Three Different Seasons, Willem A. Van Niekerk

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The objective of this study was to determine the influence of season on intake by sheep as well as certain selected qualitative characteristics of Panicum maximum (cv Gatton) (Guinea grass) at the mature growing stage. The lower DM content of the spring and summer grass (41.6 and 40.2%) did not hamper DOMI (48.1 and 26.7 W0.75/d), respectively. The N concentration of the spring and summer grass was well within the limit required for optimal rumen microbial production (1.8 - 2.0%). The high cell wall components of the winter grass resulted most probably in a significant lower IVDOM value …

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Since 1982 Embrapa Beef Catle in Campo Grande, MS, Brazil, develops a Panicum maximum Jacq. breeding program, based on the germplasm collected and assembled by IRD (Institut de Recherche pour le Developpment) and received through a cooperation-agreement with IRD. The germplasm was evaluated and four cultivars were released directly from the germplasm: cultivars Tanzania, Mombaça, Massai and BRS Zuri. Breeding began in 1990 and involved crosses between sexual plants and selected apomictic accessions. The program consists of evaluation followed by selection of hybrids in plots with replications, evaluation of the selected hybrids in national network experiments in diverse regions and …

Application Of Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (Nirs) To Forage Evaluation In Uruguay, D. Cozzolino, Y. Acosta, J. Garcia Oct 2021

Application Of Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (Nirs) To Forage Evaluation In Uruguay, D. Cozzolino, Y. Acosta, J. Garcia

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) were used to assess the chemical composition of a wide range of forages. Nearly five hundred herbage samples covering a wide range of temperate pastures species and mixtures, previously analysed by conventional wet chemistry were scanned in reflectance with a NIRS 6500 (NIRSystems, Silver Spring, USA). The coefficients of determination in calibration (R2 ) and the errors in cross validation (SECV) were 0.98 (5.8), 0.94 (22.2), 0.97 (5.6), 0.94 (6.9) and 0.89 (19.7) for crude protein, in vitro organic matter digestibility, dry matter, ash and acid detergent fiber, in g kg –1 on a …

Nutritive Value Of Double Cropped Corn For Ruminant Production, D. Vaz Martins, A. Fassio Sep 2021

Nutritive Value Of Double Cropped Corn For Ruminant Production, D. Vaz Martins, A. Fassio

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The viability of double cropping corn (Zea mays L.) in Uruguay, germplasm combination, dry matter yield and nutritive value were evaluated. An early (E) maturing hybrid, an early to medium (E-M) one and an E-M variety were planted as spring crops. One E-M hybrid, one medium to late (M-L) hybrid and a late (L) variety were planted as a second crop. PVC laboratory scale silo of the spring crop and the whole plant of the summer crop were chemically analyzed. The nutritive value of the silages were related to plant maturity stage. No differences were detected in nutritive value among …
