Treadmills are utilized as a training tool to improve aerobic fitness, but precise understanding of intensity and the corresponding physiological strain is critical for optimizing exercise prescription and associated adaptations. Running on non-motorized, curved treadmills may result in greater oxygen uptake (VO2), increased heart rate (HR), and increased rating of perceived exertion (RPE) compared to traditional motorized treadmills. The effect of a pre-workout supplement on anaerobic power output and muscular fatigue was examined. 18 participants took part in this double-blinded crossover study, reporting for testing on 3 occasions. Participants completed a 6x6 second repeated sprint test, with 20s recovery between sprints. Anaerobic power output was recorded as the highest power achieved during sprint test. The demand for efficient and effective exercises has grown in concert with increased attention to fitness as a determinant of overall health. While past studies have examined the benefits traditional conditioning exercises, there have been few investigations of high intensity functional training (HIFT). California State Parks is one of the largest providers of open water lifeguard services in the United States, and trains approximately 200 new lifeguards per year. This study compared VO2 max, lactate threshold (LT) and VO2 at LT (VO2LT) among aerobic athletes (ARA) (n=10), anaerobic athletes (ANA) (n=9) and untrained participants (UTS) (n=7). From a treadmill test to exhaustion, VO2 max and LT (4 mmol·L-1 blood lactate concentration) were assessed. Substance abuse and infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are chronic stressors that affect hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of combined aerobic and resistance training on HPA axis reactivity in women with HIV undergoing treatment for substance abuse. The purpose of this study was to develop and field test a standardized system of training intensity guidelines for the sport of track and field/cross country, modeled after the standardized system of training intensity guidelines developed, adopted, and in use by U.S.A. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to better understand women’s experiences with personal training. PURPOSE: To examine the effects of combined aquatic treadmill training (ATM) and resistance training (RT) on body composition (Bcomp), strength, and VO2max following 12 wks of training compared to RT alone. Determination Of Blood Lactate Concentration: Reliability And Validity Of A Lactate Oxidase-Based Method, Rachel White*, Daniel Yaeger*, Stasinos Stavrianeas‡

The measurement of blood lactate has long been used as marker of exercise intensity and training status. We compared a commercially available lactate oxidase spectrophotometric method (LO) to determine blood lactate levels to two previously validated methods, the lactate dehydrogenase spectrophotometric method (LDH), and the YSI 1500L Sport lactate analyzer (YSI). First we established a series of calibration curves over physiological range of lactate values (1-15 mM∙l-1 for the spectrophotometric assays and 1-30 mM∙l-1 for the YSI) with high correlations (0.986 < r < 0.999). Aerobically trained participants (n = 11) performed repeated exercise bouts of varying intensities on a cycle ergometer. Capillary blood samples (n = 189) were collected from the earlobe and the blood lactate concentration was determined using each of the three methods. An ANOVA (alpha=0.05) revealed no differences in blood lactate concentrations between the three methods. The three experimental protocols yielded similarly-shaped lactate curves, although the actual values for the LDH method was somewhat lower than the LO and the YSI at every intensity level. Bland-Altman plots revealed a slight bias towards lower lactate values with the LDH method, perhaps indicative of a more conservative measure of blood lactate. We conclude that the LO method is a reliable and valid method to determine blood lactate concentrations spectrophotometrically. All three methods can provide useful within-subject lactate curves, although we caution against interchangeable use of the three methods.
