Quercetin In Sports And Exercise: A Review, Jennifer Kurtz, Trisha Vandusseldorp, Jeff Otis

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 16(2): 1334-1384, 2023. This paper systematically reviews the latest evidence regarding Quercetin’s (Q) effect following exercise performance, aerobic and anaerobic exercise, muscle-damaging bouts and highlights blood biomarkers associated with muscle damage and recovery. Google Scholar, Web of Science, and MedLine (PubMed) searches were conducted through July- December 2021. Peer-reviewed studies that investigated Q as a single ingredient or in combination with other ingredients at dosages of 500 mg - 3000 mg, ranging from 15 min-to-1 h prior to exercise bout or chronic dose (7 days - 8 weeks) of consumption were included. A total of …

Training Status Impacts Metabolic Response To A High-Protein Weight Loss Diet In Recreationally Resistance-Trained Females., Alyssa A. Olenick, Regis C. Pearson, Nathan T. Jenkins Mar 2023

Training Status Impacts Metabolic Response To A High-Protein Weight Loss Diet In Recreationally Resistance-Trained Females., Alyssa A. Olenick, Regis C. Pearson, Nathan T. Jenkins

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 16(2): 377-392, 2023. This study investigated the effects of a novel high-protein diet template on postprandial metabolism and body composition (e.g., waist and hip circumference, body fat (%), fat mass, fat-free mass) in recreationally resistance-trained females. Fifteen females adhered to an eight-week high-protein dietary intervention (~1.5-1.6 g·kg-1·day-1) administered via template format. Pre- and post-intervention visits included anthropometrics, measurement of body composition, and an acute high-fat meal challenge. The high-fat meal challenge (61% fat) consisted of fasting postprandial blood glucose, resting metabolic rate (RMR), fat and carbohydrate oxidation assessed at 60-, 120-, …

The Effects Of Carbohydrate Intake On Body Composition And Muscular Strength In Trained Men Undergoing A Progressive Resistance Training, Alex Silva Ribeiro, Kamila Quintilhano, Witalo Kassiano, João Pedro Nunes, Ademar Avelar, Michele C. Trindade, Andreo Aguiar, Brad Schoenfeld, Edilson Serpeloni Cyrino Feb 2023

The Effects Of Carbohydrate Intake On Body Composition And Muscular Strength In Trained Men Undergoing A Progressive Resistance Training, Alex Silva Ribeiro, Kamila Quintilhano, Witalo Kassiano, João Pedro Nunes, Ademar Avelar, Michele C. Trindade, Andreo Aguiar, Brad Schoenfeld, Edilson Serpeloni Cyrino

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 16(2): 267-280, 2023. This study's purpose was to compare the effects of different carbohydrate (CHO) intakes on body composition and muscular strength following eight weeks of resistance training (RT) in pre-conditioned men. In addition, we explored the individual responses to different CHO intakes. Twenty-nine young men volunteered to participate in this study. The participants were divided into two groups according to their relative CHO intake: lower (L-CHO; n = 14) and higher (H-CHO; n = 15). Participants performed a RT program four days a week for eight weeks. The lean soft tissue (LST) and fat …

Astaxanthin Reduces Heart Rate And Carbohydrate Oxidation Rates During Exercise In Overweight Individuals, Alissa Wika, Kyle W. Reason, Matt Green, Lauren Killen, Matthew J. Mcallister, Hunter Waldman Feb 2023

Astaxanthin Reduces Heart Rate And Carbohydrate Oxidation Rates During Exercise In Overweight Individuals, Alissa Wika, Kyle W. Reason, Matt Green, Lauren Killen, Matthew J. Mcallister, Hunter Waldman

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 16(2): 252-266, 2023. Astaxanthin (AX) is an antioxidant which may spare endogenous carbohydrates and improve fat oxidation rates, thus improving metabolic flexibility. To date, no studies have attempted to examine the impact of AX in an overweight cohort, whom often suffer from metabolic inflexibility. Nineteen subjects (mean ± SD: age: 27.5 ± 6.3 years; height: 169.7 ± 9.0 cm; body mass: 96.4 ± 17.9 kg; BF%: 37.9 ± 7.0%; BMI: 33.4 ± 5.6 kg/m2; VO2peak: 25.9 ± 6.7 ml·kg−1·min−1) were recruited and supplemented with either 12 mg …

A Pilot Study On Cannabidiol (Cbd) And Eccentric Exercise: Impact On Inflammation, Performance, And Pain, Whitley J. Stone, Danilo Tolusso, Guillermo Pacheco, Shea M. Brgoch, Van T. Nguyen Jan 2023

A Pilot Study On Cannabidiol (Cbd) And Eccentric Exercise: Impact On Inflammation, Performance, And Pain, Whitley J. Stone, Danilo Tolusso, Guillermo Pacheco, Shea M. Brgoch, Van T. Nguyen

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 16(2): 109-117, 2023. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid purported to reduce symptoms of discomfort. Individuals are now using CBD to treat symptoms of multiple sclerosis, seizures, and chronic pain. Animal models indicate that CBD may be effective at reducing inflammation post fatiguing exercise. However, little evidence is available to evaluate these findings in humans. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the impact of two doses of CBD oil on inflammation (IL-6), performance, and pain after an eccentric loading protocol. Participants (n = 4) participated in three conditions (placebo, low dose, …
