An Exploratory Comparison Of Subjective Mental Fatigue Following A Task Designed To Replicate The Observation Of Game Film, Anthony Magdaleno, Lenny Wiersma, Barbara B. Meyer

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 15(6): 25-35, 2022. Laboratory-induced subjective mental fatigue (MF) has been shown to decrease sport-related performance (23, 38), yet there is a lack of research identifying tasks in real-world sport environments that induce MF (37). Since the identification of real-world tasks that induce MF may inform activities undertaken in the daily training and competition environments, the purpose of the current study was to compare changes in MF following a task designed to replicate the observation of game film to changes in MF following completion of a laboratory-based task (e.g., Stroop test). On separate counterbalanced visits, participants …

Youth-To-Senior Transition In Elite European Club Soccer, Thomas Carpels, Nairn Scobie, Niall G. Macfarlane, Ole J. Kemi

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 14(6): 1192-1203, 2021. The priority for soccer academies is to develop youth players that graduate and transfer directly to their senior squads. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of this direct youth-to-senior pathway by examining the extent to which club-trained players (CTPs) are currently involved in elite male European soccer. Relevant demographic longitudinal studies between 2009 and 2020 conducted by the International Centre for Sports Studies Football Observatory were analysed. The main findings were that the proportion of CTPs in senior squads has decreased from 23% to 17% over this time …

Depression In Collegiate Runners And Soccer Players: Relationships With Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D, Ferritin And Fractures, Devin C. Tomlinson, Evan Eschker, Jade Callan, Tamara Hew-Butler

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 14(5): 1099-1111, 2021. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate relationships between depression versus serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (vitamin D), serum ferritin (ferritin), and fractures across a competitive season. The authors conducted a prospective observational study (both pre- and post-season testing) on 51 collegiate soccer and cross-country athletes from a Midwest University. Our main outcome measure was depression, measured using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). A CES-D score ≥ 16 represented the threshold value for clinical depression. Secondary outcome variables included vitamin D, ferritin, and fractures. Two athletes (3.9%; one female) …
